Iori, Norie Oka","doi":"10.15057/28243","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15057/28243","url":null,"abstract":"The “wall at the age of nine” is used to refer to the difficulty teaching deaf children Japanese case particles. As existing research has focused on verbs with which subjects and objects are symmetrical or interchangeable, it is difficult to grasp whether the children failed to understand the underlying deep cases or the surface cases (i.e., surface forms or case particles). In this study, we therefore conducted a test asking deaf children to choose the illustration that matched the sentence shown to them in their first language: Japanese Sign Language (JSL). The participants were deaf children aged 6 to 15 from Grade 1 of a deaf Elementary School to Grade 3 of Junior High School in Tokyo. The results show that until Elementary School Grades 3 and 4 (children aged 9‒10), their encyclopedic knowledge and recognition of deep cases were not clearly separate, while older children became able to distinguish between the two. We concluded that deaf children have a fair understanding of deep cases and consider that, by utilizing the method of teaching Japanese as a second language to adults, we can develop teaching materials that allow deaf children to match the deep structure to the surface structure.","PeriodicalId":265291,"journal":{"name":"Hitotsubashi journal of arts and sciences","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125660773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Japanese English education systemʼs relative lack of focus on speaking and listening skills explains the poor performance on those areas of the test. However, Japanese students do spend significant time studying grammar, vocabulary, and writing, which presents an apparent inconsistency with TOEFL writing scores. This paper examines misunderstanding of what constitutes a good essay as a partial explanation of this phenomenon.","PeriodicalId":265291,"journal":{"name":"Hitotsubashi journal of arts and sciences","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123418976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Amburgey","doi":"10.15057/27654","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15057/27654","url":null,"abstract":"This study investigates the possible differences between Danish and Japanese university students in reported motivation to study English and in the sources of motivation, and how these factors may lead to different language learning outcomes. Specific emphasis was placed on the value of English for future employment. A Likert-scale survey, with two additional open-ended questions, was administered to both populations in a classroom setting in their respective home countries. Mann Whitney U tests revealed statistically significant differences between the two samples in general motivation and in several sources of motivation. Additionally, participantsʼ answers to open-ended questions revealed very different experiences both in past language classes and in daily life, which may have been motivating for the Danish population and demotivating for the Japanese population.","PeriodicalId":265291,"journal":{"name":"Hitotsubashi journal of arts and sciences","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129177528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their usages can be categorized as siteisizi (designated usage) or daikousizi (representative usage). In siteisizi, kono functions as a denotational determiner and sono as a connotational one. This paper also shows that siteisizi is a textual phenomenon while daikousizi is a syntactic one. These differences can be explained by applying Halliday & Hasanʼs concepts of “reference” and “substitution” . The findings of this paper also illustrate that Leechʼs “Grammar” can be considered at super-sentential levels.","PeriodicalId":265291,"journal":{"name":"Hitotsubashi journal of arts and sciences","volume":"319 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116231332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
