These activities have to be synchronized with several other simpler activities along the pipeline. Computerized numerical controls for such systems have to be flexible and strongly expandable and reusable since pipelines are frequently reconfigured to realize differently arranged pipelines with different technical requirements. The assessment of such a flexible architecture is presented, on the basis of which the building of flexible distributed controls for pipelines is possible. The architecture has been defined in the ESPRIT HPCN (High Performance Computer Networking) project MUPAAC (Multi Processor Architecture for Automatic Control). MUPAAC architecture and prototype has been assessed in order to identify the most important performance indexes.","PeriodicalId":265076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS'99) (Cat. A timed system is described as a timed automaton which is expressed as a region graph. This latter is then translated into a flattened automaton. Test sequences are derived from the flattened automaton. In order to check the conformity of a real life implementation, we detail the test architecture needed to execute the derived test sequences. This architecture considers the behaviour part as well as the timed part of the system.","PeriodicalId":265076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS'99) (Cat. In such a scenario, it is difficult for end users to specify and install an appropriate configuration for their specific environment. Defining all valid configurations of a software system is challenging, and can be addressed through a concise specification that can generate all of the possible configurations. The Deployable Software Description (DSD) part of the University of Colorado Software Dock project, is one such specification format. But using the DSD runs the risk that the set of generated configurations includes some that are invalid with respect to constraints defined independently of the DSD. The paper describes a framework to support the analysis of DSD specifications to help developers detect potentially invalid configurations. This analysis assumes that the system components are annotated with properties, and an analysis tool is provided that takes a specific configuration and analyzes it for conflicts with respect to some set of constraints. Using the DSD, we can enumerate and analyze configurations to verify their validity. The results can be used to modify the DSD to avoid future generation of invalid configurations.","PeriodicalId":265076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS'99) (Cat. We present a formal development methodology, well suited for Java dependable distributed applications. It is based on the stepwise refinement of model oriented formal specifications, and enables validation of the obtained system wrt the client's requirements. Three refinement steps have been identified in the case of fault tolerant distributed applications: first, starting from informal requirements, an initial formal specification is derived. It does not depend on implementation constraints and provides a centralized solution; second, dependability and distribution constraints are integrated; third, the Java implementation is realised. The CO-OPN/2 language is used to express specifications formally; and the dependability and distribution design as based on the Coordinated Atomic action concept. The methodology and the three refinement steps are presented through a very simple fault tolerant distributed Java application.","PeriodicalId":265076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS'99) (Cat. We use STPN to specify traffic and traffic control at an intersection and use a random distribution model to model the motion of vehicles in a road segment between any two consecutive intersections. The traffic control system is thus modeled as a composition of individual intersection models and segment distribution models. A technique is presented to incrementally evaluate the system's performance by analyzing intersections separately, according to a carefully selected order. The analysis technique conforms to the accepted practice of transportation research. Compared to existing Petri net models of traffic control systems, our technique dramatically reduces the complexity of analysis.","PeriodicalId":265076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS'99) (Cat. These objectives influence design decisions throughout the entire system life cycle. We consider the problem of formulating the cost of a design decision driven by multiple objectives. We start by discussing issues and relationships among non functional objectives, their decomposition, and attribute cost functions used to quantify them. We then describe a hierarchical model along with an equational form for system cost function synthesis. Finally, examples are given to show how the model applies to actual multi objective problems in the design of complex real time systems.","PeriodicalId":265076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS'99) (Cat. The protocol, which is currently in test at Northrop Grumman, supports communication between a mission computer (MC) and three or more tactical workstations (TWSs), connected by a single-segment LAN. We modeled the protocol in the PROMELA specification language of the SPIN verification tool, and used SPIN to analyze a number of properties of the protocol. Our investigation revealed a race condition that can lead to a disconnect of an MC/TWS connection when there is one lost UDP datagram and significant timing delays. Such delays are virtually impossible under normal E-2C operating conditions, but could be due to noise on the MC/TWS LAN. A simple modification was proposed that avoids the disconnect in many situations. Practical considerations, however, mandated that the protocol be left as it is: shutting down a noisy connection and reinitializing the TWS, with minimal delay and loss of information to the operator was deemed preferable to operating in a degraded mode.","PeriodicalId":265076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS'99) (Cat. Groupware widgets such as shared scrollbars and text editors are common in these applications to facilitate synchronization of shared information across a user group. These widgets differ from their single-user counterparts in that they must coordinate and consistently reflect changes in shared widget properties. We propose a framework allowing these groupware widgets to be transformed from their single-user counterparts. The framework enables single-user widgets to register their connections to a separate notification server. After registration, these widgets become groupware widgets. The notification server uses the registered connections to update widgets of the changes in shared properties using a callback mechanism. Widget designers only need to determine the set of properties by which a group of widgets should be synchronized and to what extent they are synchronized. These properties collectively define the coupling among a group of widgets. The coupling is kept as a coupling portfolio in the notification server. Dynamic modification of coupling portfolios is supported by on-the-fly reconfiguration of multicast groups. Our framework is useful to simplify the client implementation of handling synchronization events and reduce the overheads of processing these events. These concepts are illustrated using a groupware Web browser.","PeriodicalId":265076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS'99) (Cat. To alleviate these difficulties, we propose a development method for distributed systems that integrates different basic approaches. First, it combines the use of the formal description technique SDL with software reuse concepts. This results in the definition of a use-case driven, incremental development method with SDL patterns as the main reusable artifacts. Experience with this approach has shown that there are several other factors of influence, such as the quality of reuse artifacts or the experience of the development team. Therefore, we further combined our SDL pattern approach with an improvement methodology known from the area of experimental software engineering. In order to demonstrate the validity of this integrating approach, we sketch some representative outcomings of a case study.","PeriodicalId":265076,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems (ICECCS'99) (Cat.
