According to measurements of its trigger delay and jitter at different voltages and pressure from 3 to 10 atm, the jitter of the switch (standard deviation) is 1.5 ns, allowing simultaneous switching of a large number of low-inductance capacitor-switch assemblies. The operating characteristics of the gas switch demonstrate its potential for successful use in LTD technologies.","PeriodicalId":264995,"journal":{"name":"2018 20th International Symposium on High-Current Electronics (ISHCE)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127366967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the voltage rise time in the gap is comparable with this time interval and electric field strength is sufficiently high, one can expect formation the flow of runaway electrons (RE) with a relativistic energy approaching to that determined by the amplitude of the voltage pulse. The train of serially connected gyromagnetic nonlinear transmission lines at the solid-state modulator S-500 output was used to form -860-kV travelling voltage pulse possessing a maximum rate of the voltage rise of 10 MV/ ns at a 100-ps-long front. Due to breakdown delay stage, the pulse amplitude was doubled at the cathode of 2-cm-long air gap in an open-end regime. As a result, RE energy of at least 1.4 MeV was achieved at the anode of the gap. Temporal-and energetic structure of REs pulse is considered.","PeriodicalId":264995,"journal":{"name":"2018 20th International Symposium on High-Current Electronics (ISHCE)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117321290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nanosecond voltage pulses of negative polarity with an amplitude of 25 kV were applied to the gap. In the experiments, radiation emitted at the stage of plasma formation was registered with a four-channel ICCD camera, as well as a streak camera equipped with monochromator. In addition, pulses of voltage and discharge current were registered. The numerical simulation was performed using the modified PIC code combined with Monte-Carlo method. The numerical model was based on the actual geometry of the gas discharge chamber equipped with voltage and current sensors and used in the experiment. To compare the time behavior of plasma radiation with experimental data, spatial and time behavior of excited nitrogen molecules was monitored in the simulation. The propagation velocity of an ionization wave front was determined. The model of processes taking place in the discharge gap was constructed.","PeriodicalId":264995,"journal":{"name":"2018 20th International Symposium on High-Current Electronics (ISHCE)","volume":"170 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121431596","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The LTD stage comprises twelve capacitor-switch assemblies (CSAs) connected in parallel to a matched load and ferromagnetic cores of total cross-section 90 cm2 made of an amorphous 2NSR alloy tape 30 µm thick (analogue of Metglass). The outer diameter of the stage is ≈1 m, and its height is 0.45 m. Estimations suggest that when switched in sync, such CSAs can provide a current pulse with an amplitude of 1.1 MA and rise time of ~100 ns at a matched load of 0.067 Ohm, which corresponds to a pulsed power of 80 GW. The small overall dimensions and the high output power of the LTD stage can allow its successful use as a driver of low-impedance loads in laboratory studies and as a standard element of pulsed power accelerators.","PeriodicalId":264995,"journal":{"name":"2018 20th International Symposium on High-Current Electronics (ISHCE)","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114581231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The program code allows studying electromagnetic fields of axially symmetric TM - and TE-modes of circular slow-wave structures (SWS) with the waveguide diameter-to-radiation wavelength ratio of about 4–50 in the frequency range of up to 0.5 THz. Detailed numerical investigations of dispersion characteristics of infinite periodic waveguides and electromagnetic eigenfields of TMon-modes for the finite length SWSs with the diameter-to-wavelength ratio equal to 4, 8, and 16 are presented. The cases of appearance of longitudinal bulk resonances and a region of stable maintenance of coupled waves TM01- TM0n in the finite length SWSs, depending on the height of diaphragms, are demonstrated. One of the modern solutions of the problem is the generation of electromagnetic (EM) waves due to the interaction of high-current relativistic electron beams with plasma. Since in this case the radiation frequency is comparable with the plasma frequency, it can be easily adjusted by simply changing the plasma density. The efficient terahertz electromagnetic emission was produced during the injection of relativistic electron beams into plasma in laboratory experiments at the GOL-3 facility INP SB RAS. In this paper the mechanisms of the high efficiency of energy transfer from the relativistic electron beam to the EM radiation in turbulent regime of collisionless plasma are investigated on the base of computer simulation. The kinetic approach for ion and electron plasma components, as well as for electron beam, was used in 2D numerical model with the real mass ratio of charged particles. A parallel electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code UMKA2D3V was applied to simulate beam-plasma system for parameters close to the parameters of laboratory experiments at GOL-3 facility. Regimes of injection of one electron beam into the plasma and the counter injection of electron beams were considered. Computational experiments were performed using modern computer systems with massively parallel architecture.","PeriodicalId":264995,"journal":{"name":"2018 20th International Symposium on High-Current Electronics (ISHCE)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132546604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
