The article pivots around the life narrative of a Korean adopted Seoul-based chef who was raised in and subsequently deported from East LA. Rather than simply “you are what you eat,” adoptee food ways can be understood as a representation of a systemic loss of family, history, and culture and subsequent adaptations towards a collective “adoptee foodway.”","PeriodicalId":263014,"journal":{"name":"Verge: Studies in Global Asias","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116585184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Put differently: examining the representation of Indian foodways during this period enables us to mark the operation of racial differences in the service of consolidating an image of the Vietnamese nation. Relying on prevailing Vietnamese literary and historical records about Indian food and eating styles, this paper argues that Vietnamese intellectuals – nation-makers – presented Indian food and eating practices as the embodiment of colonial capitalism, all aiming to highlight the political and class goals of Vietnamese nationalism.","PeriodicalId":263014,"journal":{"name":"Verge: Studies in Global Asias","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127140572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through close readings of Nicole Ponseca’s I Am a Filipino: And This is How We Cook (2018), Alvin Cailan’s Amboy: Recipes from the Filipino-American Dream (2020), and Yana Gilbuena’s No Forks Given: Recipes and Memories of a Traveling Chef (2018), this essay begins to trace the hidden intimacies of food, colonialism, and family migration that structures differing definitions of culinary authenticity. Using a family recipe, this article, also analyzes how culinary authenticity is navigated, unsettled, and reformulated on a quotidian level. Overall, these hidden intimacies written in cookbooks, recipes, and alimentary narratives formulate the arena of authenticity that structure the overall nature of Filipino American foodways.","PeriodicalId":263014,"journal":{"name":"Verge: Studies in Global Asias","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124397721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, institution-prepared meals are an important part of the immediate postpartum experience. Drawing from ethnographic research conducted at a 17-bed maternity clinic in central Japan, I discuss how 1) nutrients are calculated to ensure adherence to national nutrition guidelines, and meals are individualized to fit specific patients, 2) staff incorporate local ingredients and specialties that support local identity, and 3) non-Japanese foods are used both as entertainment and vehicles through which Japanese mothers consume regional, national, and non-Japanese cultures. With attention to the emic terms tanoshimi, shigoto, and ikigai, I demonstrate that meals here go beyond prescription and care: they are sites of the production and consumption of regional, national, and global citizenship ideals and constitute what Takeda calls “biopolitical governing” (2008).","PeriodicalId":263014,"journal":{"name":"Verge: Studies in Global Asias","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129003202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New foods come in and go out of vogue in all complex culinary traditions. The idea of authenticity seems to imply a timeless perspective on profoundly historical processes.
