These benefits, however, do not yet readily carry over to distributed, real-time and embedded (DRE) systems, which are a class of systems that require stringent assurances on quality of service (QoS) properties including timeliness, reliability and security all at once. This doctoral research is investigating the sources of these limitations that make it hard to host DRE systems in the cloud, and developing solutions to overcome them. This paper makes three contributions in this regard. First, it outlines the key challenges that must be resolved in supporting DRE systems in the cloud and surveys related literature. Second, it presents ongoing work that addresses one key challenge stemming from the need for real-time and scalable resource monitoring in the cloud. Third, it outlines our proposed ideas on resolving the remainder of the challenges.","PeriodicalId":262822,"journal":{"name":"International Middleware Conference","volume":"321 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134149430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Server-side self-healing is a well-established discipline and has resulted in substantial cost reductions for data centers. In contrast, self-healing on the client side has not been so well-studied.\u0000 In this work, we present our approach for improving browser dependability. As desktop applications are being replaced by web applications, browsers are becoming the common application platform; therefore, it is critical for the browsers to be highly reliable and available. Our system is designed to achieve this goal by monitoring the browser components, analyzing the collected data using statistical techniques to predict failures, and taking actions to remove or reduce effects of errors if needed. This paper presents the overall draft of our solution for making the browser dependable, including the prototype architecture, its different components, and the related state of the art and future work.","PeriodicalId":262822,"journal":{"name":"International Middleware Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117213155","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Combination of delay-tolerant mobile ad-hoc networks and infrastructure-based mobile communications results in an increased number of communication opportunities in many usage scenarios. However, efficient exploitation of communication opportunities remains a challenging task.\u0000 This article introduces a novel middleware approach specialized for consistent and efficient wireless communication in rural environments. An important part of communication optimization is realized by processing on-hand information of the current application scenario. The middleware autonomously links scenario information to network states and applies machine-learning-based analyses to derive meaningful communication predictions. Cooperation of infrastructure-based and ad-hoc communication is implemented by a gateway component. The gateway collects connectivity information of mobile nodes, enhances communication predictions and distributes predictions across the network. Evaluation of local communication layer and application layer information as well as sharing of communication predictions using an application level API ensure efficient use of communication opportunities.","PeriodicalId":262822,"journal":{"name":"International Middleware Conference","volume":"519 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123127816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is difficult for hospitals to measure precisely wait times and root causes. To do so they need to process events from disparate sources in real-time to measure fine grained care states of the patients, providers, beds and other resources related to care processes. In this paper, we present a state monitoring service for patient flow management that has been prototyped with a Toronto area hospital to integrate events from RFID tracking, business process management (BPM) applications and legacy systems. The results show that BPM and RFID provide events in real-time, but on their own could not fully define all states in the care process. Our state monitoring service integrates BPM and RFID and infers new events that define all the states not handled by BPM and RFID.","PeriodicalId":262822,"journal":{"name":"International Middleware Conference","volume":"478 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123764985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
