Accordingly, this study is a zoological mapping of Dan 7:1-28. In this passage, there is a lion with eagle wings, a bear devouring its prey, a leopard, and an unnamed beast with fearsome teeth and horns. Each of these creatures represents a powerful empire that does not care about human rights, freedom, or love. Who can defeat these monsters? They seem to respond to doubts about God’s judgment, as these are expressed in the Psalms and Wisdom literature. More specifically, Mal 3:13-21 represents a Second Temple prophetic voice that claims that a thriving relationship with Yhwh is dependent on the people’s observance of the law: those who keep the law will survive the coming judgment, (re)possess the land, participate in a restored cult at Zion, and take part in Yhwh’s punishment of the wicked.
