Sensor traffic patterns are very different from those occurring with current Internet applications, so that performance evaluation requires some specific investigation with the aim to draw the main requirements to achieve target Quality of Service (QoS). This paper addresses a preliminary study of the sensor data transmission over satellites highlighting the main key factors to take care in the system configuration: experienced delays, resource utilization and overall throughput. Analysis relies on a Ns-2 based simulator, which includes a sensor data generator and implements a DVB-RCS-compliant network.","PeriodicalId":262730,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First AESS European Conference on Satellite Telecommunications (ESTEL)","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122277528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system has to provide both navigation and context aware information to people that may be in difficult emotive state as it happens to patients and visitors in a hospital. This system is under development within the POR/FESR Project EasyMob, funded by Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy. In this paper we will first present the EasyMob system approach and discuss requirements and challenges. Then, we will focus on the navigation technology and we will describe the solutions that have been developed.","PeriodicalId":262730,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First AESS European Conference on Satellite Telecommunications (ESTEL)","volume":"11 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120849479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simulation-based decision support can predict possible interferences like shadowing or multipath effects, but especially in time-critical emergency scenarios, a trade-off between minimizing the simulation time and maximizing the accuracy of the modeled scenario needs to be determined. Both factors have significant influence on the degree of accuracy in the results. Therefore, this paper presents a pre-simulation routine called Optimization Matrix, which reduces the simulation time to a certain value (e.g. journey time of the rescue forces) but keeping the resulting simulation error acceptable for the given case of application. In addition, the Optimization Matrix was integrated into a framework to enable an evaluation of a selected area-of-interest and a result visualization in an interactive 3D map view.","PeriodicalId":262730,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First AESS European Conference on Satellite Telecommunications (ESTEL)","volume":"216 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120854593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The L-band Digital Aeronautical Communication System (L-DACS) is the part of the future system that will be operating in a part of the aeronautical L-band (960-1164 MHz), already occupied by a large number of radio-frequency legacy systems. This paper aims at studying the L-DACS impact on a legacy system, the Distance Measuring Equipment (DME), under two critical situations. Such topics are fundamental in aeronautics, as any communication or radionavigation dysfunction may endanger flight and passengers security. Some obtained results will be used for the L-DACS standardization and its specifications finalization. For the first scenario (air-to-air scenario), we propose a deterministic algorithm to compute the interference level in the frequency domain. Since this seems to be insufficient for the second scenario (co-site scenario), we develop a time-frequency approach to analyze the interference using an aeronautical RFC test-bed that we implemented at Supelec.","PeriodicalId":262730,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First AESS European Conference on Satellite Telecommunications (ESTEL)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127228786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dual redundant data bus will provide exchange of information in almost all operative conditions and connect all the electronic peripherals, supporting the data exchange speed required by the different sub-systems composing the satellite. The proposed architecture uses differential bus with galvanic isolation among all the connected modules in order to have fault tolerance, good signal integrity and to connect as many tiles in series or in parallel. The proposed structure has been tested in almost all possible fault conditions and the simulation and actual results show reliable transmission and reception of signal from one module to the other even under different types of fault conditions. System stability is guaranteed by the proposed characteristic of each subsystem in such a way that any number of modules can be connected to the communication bus without impairing overall performance and stability. This work presents the bus interface circuit located between the processor and the communication channel and also the fault tolerance analysis with different possible types of faults.","PeriodicalId":262730,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First AESS European Conference on Satellite Telecommunications (ESTEL)","volume":"45 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125898815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In queue-based schemes, the controller's objective is to drive the buffer queue length to an appropriate reference queue length, and the efficiency of the control strictly depends on the choice of its reference value. In latest approaches, solutions to adaptively modify the target reference queue length based on a set of network information have been proposed; nevertheless, in such approaches, the satellite terminals should base their control strategies on information which are not available to them, according to the communication standards of state-of-the-art technologies, such as DVB-RCS. The novelty of the presented algorithm is that it overcomes this limit by dynamically changing the reference queue length, based on information actually broadcast to the network terminals; the algorithm is at same time simple and effective, and is based on a game-theoretic approach which benefits of recent advances in congestion pricing theory. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is supported by Opnet® simulations as well as by considerations about the real implementability of the solution.","PeriodicalId":262730,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First AESS European Conference on Satellite Telecommunications (ESTEL)","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115984779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cognitive Radio is one of the most promising among these technologies. Three paradigms for its application have emerged. With “interweaving,” the secondary (unlicensed) users are able to occupy the portions of the spectrum left temporarily free by the primary (licensed) users. In the “underlay” paradigm, the secondary transmitter overlaps in frequency with the primary user, after making sure that the interference level it causes is below a given threshold. The “overlay” paradigm uses the secondary user's knowledge of the primary users transmission scheme and of the channel to choose a transmission scheme that causes an acceptable amount of interference. In this paper we briefly review the basic concepts underlying Cognitive Radio, and examine their applications to satellite communications.","PeriodicalId":262730,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First AESS European Conference on Satellite Telecommunications (ESTEL)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128234894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed transceiver structure uses Infrared Light Emitting Diode to transmit pulses in the near infrared spectrum. The receiver circuit consists of photodiode, preamplifier, post amplifier and a comparator stage. Since noise is a major problem for receiver, a very low noise preamplifier and post amplifier stages have been selected. Since the communication system is inside the satellite, there is possibility of sunlight to enter from small holes and blind the receiver. This problem is solved by attenuation circuit. Displacement damage effect on selected LEDs and photodiodes has been calculated and the resulting drop in efficiency has been verified using proposed transceiver. This optical wireless module is fully scalable depending on the needs of the system and can coexist with more traditional wired communication channels as required.","PeriodicalId":262730,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE First AESS European Conference on Satellite Telecommunications (ESTEL)","volume":"463 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127006397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
