The proposed approach can be considered as base for a structures monitoring system. The analysis of the acoustoelastic effect for solid bodies, i.e., the correlation between the acoustic properties and the stress state, may be suitably exploited for experimental purposes. To this aim, relevant modeling and experimental issues should be overcome. Indeed, the usual theoretical framework of the acoustoelastic measurements is the so-called third-order elasticity, based on the use of the acoustoelastic coefficients, and requiring relatively simple experimental measurements. Here, by adopting an innovative ultrasonic setup, we investigate the capability of a theoretical model developed within the linearized elasticity, and used for describing the propagation of small amplitude waves in prestressed elastic materials. The results of the ultrasonic tests show that this approach in capable of accurate in situ stress measurements. The proposed experimental setup could be further investigated for monitoring applications of stress states in structures during their service life.","PeriodicalId":262720,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Workshop on Environmental, Energy, and Structural Monitoring Systems (EESMS)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123851846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The site in question is composed by the Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo basins (Southern Italy), which are mutually connected. In turn, the Mar Grande is joined to the Ionian Sea by means of two openings. Therefore, the system shows features typical of a lagunar environment, which is also affected by coastal heavy industry and anthropic pressure, thus being highly vulnerable. A monitoring of its hydrodynamics could be useful, allowing both to check the real-time status of the basin and promptly intervene when accidents occur and to create a dataset necessary to calibrate and validate modelling systems providing forecasts. To this, in the framework of the Italian flagship Project RITMARE, a meteo-oceanographic station, a wave-current meter and a tide gauge have been installed in the area, since December 2013. In detail, measurements of wind, waves, tides and current profiles, are acquired on site with different sampling frequencies and are transmitted on a web cloud by a router 3G, where they are stored, thus being available for download by remote users. The data acquisition and processing is managed by the research group of the Department of Civil, Environmental, Building, Engineering and Chemistry (Technical University of Bari). All the acquired data are archived in monthly time-series, examined and discussed. The analysis of currents is made in two different measuring stations for the whole year 2015, as well as the analysis of wave data. On the contrary, tide data have been assessing only recently, since August 2015. Comparisons with available recordings of the year 2014 are examined. Also spatial and temporal correlations of both waves and currents are discussed. Finally, tidal trends are shown, consistent with current inversions.","PeriodicalId":262720,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Workshop on Environmental, Energy, and Structural Monitoring Systems (EESMS)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128042256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Water resources management, on one side, and efficient water/wastewater treatment and control operations, on the other, must be carried-out timely and synergistically for best results. It is well known that conventional field sampling operations condition significantly data reliability from both qualitative and quantitative aspects. To overcome this problem, speditive field analysis, carried-out by the use of low-cost devices with solid-state gas sensors (e-nose), may offer a solution to the sampling, transport and deferred laboratory operations. The proposed devices do not require consumable and may be easily connected to data acquisition network.","PeriodicalId":262720,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Workshop on Environmental, Energy, and Structural Monitoring Systems (EESMS)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117079963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prominent examples are environmental monitoring applications, including safety related applications when handling hazardous substances in production plants (e.g. oil/gas industry) or military applications. The advantages of IMS detectors are fast response times of a few milliseconds, very high sensitivity in the ppb range and a small and simple set up that allows for portability and robustness for even field deployment. Problematic is the relatively low sensitivity, i.e. a lot of substances yield the same signal response. In order to improve, IMS are often coupled with mass spectrometry (MS) devices. The main challenge in IMS-MS is that the ions have to be transferred from atmospheric pressure on the IMS side to vacuum on the MS side, which allows only for interfaces of very small diameters and thus introduces ion loss. In this paper we have analyzed with help of finite elements method simulations how the shape of that small diameter interface influences the transmission efficiency, and improvements of over 100% could be achieved.","PeriodicalId":262720,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Workshop on Environmental, Energy, and Structural Monitoring Systems (EESMS)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133382594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within this context, not only monitoring is important, but also consistency and coherency of data, as well as aggregated information is required. In that sense, surveillance methods and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) play a pivotal role. Thus, the project iNSPiRe develops an automated monitoring system able to store daily information, as well as automatically calculate KPIs by means of database technologies and determines alarms at different levels. With the obtained results, iNSPiRE aims at conceiving, developing and demonstrating Systemic Renovation Packages, through the innovative integration of envelope technologies, energy generation (including Renewable energy systems (RES) integration), energy distribution, lighting and comfort management systems into deep energy renovation of buildings, both in the residential and tertiary sectors. Then, the combination of the automated monitoring framework and the renovation packages, the goal is to achieve energy consumption for the building lower than 50 kWh/m2/year.","PeriodicalId":262720,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Workshop on Environmental, Energy, and Structural Monitoring Systems (EESMS)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133446804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is based on a new nonlinear filtering scheme under the name Derivative-free nonlinear Kalman Filter and on statistical processing of the obtained state estimates, according to the properties of the x2 distribution. To apply this fault diagnosis method, first it is shown that the dynamic model of the distributed interconnected power generators is a differentially flat one. Next, by exploiting differential flatness properties a change of variables (diffeomorphism) is applied to the power system, which enables also to solve the associated state estimation (filtering) problem. Additionally, statistical processing is performed for the obtained residuals, that is for the differences between the state vector of the monitored power system and the state vector provided by the aforementioned filter when the latter makes use of a fault-free model. It is shown, that the suitably weighted square of the residuals' vector follows the x2 statistical distribution. This property allows to use confidence intervals and to define thresholds that demonstrate whether the distributed power system functions as its fault-free model or whether parametric changes have taken place in it and thus a fault indication should be given. It is also shown that the proposed statistical criterion enables fault isolation to be performed, that is to find out the specific power generators within the distributed power system which have exhibited a failure. The efficiency of the proposed filtering method for condition monitoring in distributed power systems is confirmed through simulation experiments.","PeriodicalId":262720,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Workshop on Environmental, Energy, and Structural Monitoring Systems (EESMS)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130343867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To deal with this, opportunistic transmission approaches, i.e. methods which leverage on spectrum sensing techniques to transfer data without the need for pre-assigned frequency slots, can be exploited; however, these methods often require computationally expensive spectrum estimation techniques, which may be unsuitable for low power devices. In this work, a spectrum sensing method which uses a simple and efficient chirp-based demodulation approach is presented: this technique allows preservation of both time and frequency resolution in spectrum estimation, while reducing computational load on sensor nodes, therefore making the deployment of an opportunistic environmental sensor network feasible.","PeriodicalId":262720,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Workshop on Environmental, Energy, and Structural Monitoring Systems (EESMS)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127752707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A tracking system to localize people within a building has been developed using a novel infrastructure system and a custom signal processing method. Knowledge whether people are present or not in every room enables the automatic switching-off of lighting and heating/cooling in empty room increasing the energy efficiency of building system. The implemented method achieves performance comparable to that of a traditional Bluetooth Low Energy indoor location system, nevertheless fewer devices are used. In particular, a new Lagrangian module has been created in order to follow the 3D particles motion, computing three-dimensional Water Transit Time (WTT) and comparing it with the Water Renewal Time (WRT) of the basin.
