We focus on the outage probability of such a systems and then derive closed-form expressions for the outage probability of these systems over independent but non-identical imperfect Log-normal fading channels. We consider the error of channel estimation as a Gaussian random variable. As a result the estimated channels distribution are not Log-normal either as would be in the case of the Rayleigh fading channels. This is exactly the reason why our simulation results do not exactly matched with analytical results. However, this difference is negligible for a wide variety of situations.","PeriodicalId":262660,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 22nd International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115460259","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While some traditional localization systems use the triangulation techniques for outdoor channels, fingerprint positioning techniques are mostly used in more complex indoor environments like mines. One of the techniques exploited in the quasi-curvilinear topology of underground mines is the Channel Impulse Response (CIR) based fingerprint positioning combined with Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). This article innovates a CIR-based positioning technique within a cooperative memory-assisted approach that exploits both the temporal (from different time instances) and spatial (from different space positions) diversities of the collected fingerprints. Introducing memory-type signatures in a cooperative localization technique within the spatial confinements of the tunnel-shaped narrow-vein mines significantly increases the accuracy, precision and robustness of the localization system. The cooperative memory-assisted technique is capable of localizing a transmitter with an accuracy of less than 25 cm 90% of the time.","PeriodicalId":262660,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 22nd International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115924394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our proposed scheme, we classify the various application services into two QoS classes, i.e., streaming and downloading types of data transmissions. This paper focuses on a frame fragmentation method in data link layer to improve both latency and throughput performances in network layer. The proposed scheme properly controls the packet length based on the QoS classes as well as CSI (Channel State Information). The computer simulations reveal that our proposed scheme improves latency and throughput performances by 8.52–10.5 dB and 12.4–12.7%, respectively.","PeriodicalId":262660,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 22nd International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123910061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To solve the problem of radio frequency scarcity, interference minimization-oriented channel assignment has been very much explored at PHY layer. However, the effect of time domain simultaneous transmission on the neighboring interference is rarely considered. In this paper, we propose a cross-layer channel assignment algorithm for newly deployed access point (AP) initial setting up in high-density WLANs. Compared to the conventional algorithms which only focus on PHY layer, our proposed algorithm jointly analyzes the time domain overlap from MAC layer and frequency domain overlap at PHY layer to minimize the neighboring interference, which is the fatal reason of network Quality of Service (QoS) reduction. We also modify the beacon frame to support real-time information collection for channel assignment. Simulation results are provided to validate the proposed cross-layer channel assignment algorithm.","PeriodicalId":262660,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 22nd International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114614361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The signal is distorted by noise and independently decoded by each receiver. Receivers cooperate in the sense that the outcome is conveyed to a decision center, which makes the final decision on the received signal by a majority vote. A potential scenario which could be described by this model is a cluster of base stations jointly receiving signals from a mobile station and conjoining individual decodings. Similar principles apply for cognitive radio setups where a secondary user employs many weak subcarriers, subject to sudden drop out by occupation from the primary users. The whole system is modeled as a cascade of channels, and quality of information exchange is measured by mutual information. This allows for modeling and optimizing quantization and detection in a unifying approach. Numerical evaluations demonstrate that the increase of mutual information by using additional channels is only logarithmic. 4-QAM is investigated as a concrete example and system performance is numerically investigated. The model in this paper is motivated by one used for describing information exchange in biological neural networks, revealing so called stochastic resonance by adding noise to signals.","PeriodicalId":262660,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 22nd International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116391030","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our first configuration assumes the use of three low directivity omni-dectional elements. The second arrangement makes use of three orthogonally orientated directional elements. The spatial and temporal characteristics of the in-home channels are modelled using 3D ray tracing and combined with appropriately orientated complex polarmetric patterns for each antenna element. Physical layer throughput is computed for all modulation and coding schemes using a received bit information rate abstraction technique. The theory shows that directional antennas outperform the omni-directional devices in most cases. Directional elements show increased sensitivity to orientation, however for 83% of locations and orientations they still result in throughput enhancement. Directional antennas provide a 33% improvement in average data rate for random client orientations, improving to 52% with optimum alignment to the multipath.","PeriodicalId":262660,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 22nd International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"58 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123227348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, continuous scanning for WLAN points of attachment can be a power exhausting mechanism for such battery-powered devices. These mobile devices, besides being equipped with different wireless access interfaces, are also coupled with sensors such as accelerometer, GPS, luminance and magnetic compass. In fact, sensors are increasingly being coupled into different devices and environments and are able to convey sensing information through networks into decision entities able to optimize different processes. In this paper we propose a framework where media independent sensing information is used to enhance wireless link management towards energy-efficiency. This framework enables the dissemination of sensing information towards local and remote decision entities, enhancing other processes (e.g. mobility) with sensing information in order to provide true Ambient Intelligence scenarios. We introduce this framework into a wireless management scenario able to provide energy-efficient optimal network connectivity.","PeriodicalId":262660,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 22nd International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123486545","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The novelty of the algorithm lies in the method to complete the Euclidean distance matrix by inferring the unknown distances such as to align all nodes on a k-hyperplane, where typically k is 2 or 3. The relative locations of the nodes are then computed using multidimensional scaling. We also present experimental results with data collected using our WASP platform to verify the improvement in localization using our algorithm over previously published techniques.","PeriodicalId":262660,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 22nd International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117193145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, their reliability when primary users have very low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the presence of noise uncertainty remains a challenging problem. This paper focuses on detecting wireless microphone signals in the presence of noise uncertainty. Power Spectrum Density (PSD)-based sensing has been proposed in the literature as the best sensing algorithm for wireless microphones. However, when there is noise uncertainty, PSD-based sensing performance is severely degraded. To solve this problem, eignevalues-based blind sensing, which does not need noise information, have been proposed. In this paper, we present a new adaptive spectrum sensing algorithm that outperforms both PSD-based sensing and the eigenvalues-based sensing in the presence of noise uncertainty. The algorithm combines the decisions of the two algorithms, and then, adapts the decision threshold required for the PSD-based sensing in an iterative way. Simulation results show that the proposed spectrum sensing algorithm outperforms the PSD-based sensing in the presence of 1 dB noise uncertainty by more than 2 dBs. At the same level of noise uncertainty, our algorithm outperforms the eigenvalue-based sensing by 1.2 dBs.","PeriodicalId":262660,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE 22nd International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124618526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
