Validated electromagnetic environmental effects modeling and simulation of these advanced apertures is critical to enhance overall ISR performance. The current tactical battlespace presents a complex operating electromagnetic environment. Electromagnetic modeling and simulation toolsets are faced with challenges including RF design of realistic but complex problems which must be solved using less computation time. Aperture-related design, modeling and simulation focuses on antenna gain characteristics, developing phased array antenna concepts as well as analyzing and minimizing the electromagnetic interactions among elements of an electronic system and its environment. As apertures become more closely spaced together on a specific platform architecture, interference may occur as a result of both near and far field coupling as well as cosite intermodulation. This interference can involve amplifier distortion, limits on input/output power, interferences due to interaction between desired and unwanted signals, changes in input impedance, radiation impedance, current distribution and radiation patterns. Northrop Grumman, in collaboration with the Polytechnic Institute of New York University, are developing advanced electromagnetic modeling and simulation toolsets including first principle electromagnetic codes, such as method of moments (MoM) and Multilevel Fast Multipole Method (MLFMM), to perform full wave analysis of near field coupling and obtain the effective radiation patterns for each of the localized aperture systems. A reduction in EMI may be required in order to ensure enough interference free operation during active ISR, as these platforms evolve into more complex, multi-mission ISR networked systems. New platforms are going to have unique electromagnetic compatibility issues that require both phenomenology and validated first principal electromagnetic modeling so that the platform can provide a broad array of wideband passive sensors as well as active arrays. This paper will review very basic to more complicated interference phenomena and approaches to minimize these effects.","PeriodicalId":262512,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Long Island Systems, Applications and Technology Conference","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121372159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The health monitoring device is to be placed on an injured victim during an emergency and act as a sensor node to connect to a wireless ad-hoc network to transmit the patient's vital sign data. The target market for this system is emergency response institutions such as municipal emergency services, city and state EMS and federal emergency services (e.g., FEMA or the National Guard). Most Wireless health monitoring systems targeted home users and we have not found too many systems designed for emergency responses. Therefore, we expect our system to encounter only a small amount of competitions.","PeriodicalId":262512,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Long Island Systems, Applications and Technology Conference","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115251814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems are used for advanced electromagnetic computations such as antenna cosite coupling, intermodulation, and radar cross section (RCS) analyses, among many more applications. Such computations require the use of first principle electromagnetic codes, such as method of moments (MoM) and Multilevel Fast Multipole Method (MLFMM), to perform full wave analyses. Unfortunately, these methods are very time consuming and memory prohibitive due to the inherent complexity of our ISR systems. At present, the models currently being used for analysis of EM computations could take days or even weeks to formulate a solution. Many times, it takes hours to simply determine if there is an error in the problem or if it is unsolvable. Since real-time computation analysis is so important to the defense industry, Northrop Grumman has been working extensively to discover ways in which to make these necessary calculations faster and more efficient. Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) computation offers a unique opportunity for electromagnetic simulation acceleration. GPU technology has been advancing faster than CPU technology due to a consumer fueled gaming industry. GPUs use a unique pixel based system that can not be simulated in an ordinary CPU and therefore allows for unique benefits when running computations. Northrop Grumman has been collaborating with Stony Brook University to explore their research in GPU computation. Northrop Grumman has its own, functioning, 6 node GPU cluster that we hope to use, in parallel with compressive sensing. Our GPU cluster will be able to parallelize the complex computations across the six nodes of the system, which will again decrease computation time. GPU computation has many applications besides electromagnetic modeling and RCS analysis. These modern adaptations for complex computing can be applied to virtually any large, complex and time-consuming problem. With these modifications, we hope to be able to increase the ability of our systems to handle computations that are more difficult because the complexity of our world will only continue to increase.","PeriodicalId":262512,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Long Island Systems, Applications and Technology Conference","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116359932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This project seeks to improve elevator call time responsiveness by utilizing the concept that traffic flows generally form definable patterns that can be used to predict future traffic flow behaviors. A feed-forward neural network-based control algorithm has been developed that can approximate elevator call patterns by learning to associate time of day with specific call locations. This algorithm was tested against fuzzy patterns of elevator calls in which the randomly generated calls were biased towards certain floors at certain times of day. When the average neural network controlled call times of 10 such fuzzy sets were compared to the typical scenario of the elevator returning to the first floor after each call, a 42% improvement in elevator call time responsiveness was observed. It is thereby suggested that a machine learning enabled-elevator control system could result in increased user satisfaction by reducing wait times by helping to ensure that the elevator is at the most likely place the elevator will be called from prior to an individual even pushing the call button. The utility of such an algorithm is likely further enhanced, however, by the fact that having the elevator in the most likely call location can also lead to significant energy savings in that the elevator will need to travel less to pick up prospective passengers.","PeriodicalId":262512,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Long Island Systems, Applications and Technology Conference","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124247217","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to the material's poor hole mobility, several special techniques were developed to ensure its suitability for radiation detection. Among them, the virtual Frisch-grid CZT detector is an attractive option, having a simple configuration, yet delivering an outstanding spectral performance. The goal of our group in Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is to improve the performance of Frisch-ring CZT detectors; most recently, that effort focused on the non-contacting Frisch-ring detector, allowing us to build an inexpensive, large-volume detector array with high energy-resolution and a large effective area. In this paper, the principles of virtual Frisch-grid detectors are described, especially BNL's innovative improvements. The potential applications of virtual Frisch-grid detectors are discussed, and as an example, a hand-held gamma-ray spectrometer using a CZT virtual Frisch-grid detector array is introduced, which is a self-contained device with a radiation detector, readout circuit, communication circuit, and high-voltage supply. It has good energy resolution of 1.4% (FWHM of 662-keV peak) with a total detection volume of ∼20 cm3. Such a portable inexpensive device can be used widely in nonproliferation applications, non-destructive detection, radiation imaging, and for homeland security. Extended systems based on the same technology have potential applications in industrial- and nuclear-medical-imaging.","PeriodicalId":262512,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Long Island Systems, Applications and Technology Conference","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131629278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We designed and tested Eigenface based algorithms that improve face recognition through feature extraction, i.e. extracting the ‘best bands’ according to various criteria such as decorelation and statistical independence. Eigenfaces correspond to principal components and have previously been used for regular grayscale and color images. In this paper we expand their use to hyperspectral imagery, i.e. data sets of images of the same scene associated to narrow wavelength intervals. Our approach is a two decomposition process. In the first, the hyperspectral data is reduced to grayscale using Principal Component Analysis. In the second, the grayscale images are processed using the classical Eigenface detection algorithm. The results suggest that spectral imaging improves face classification over its counterpart.","PeriodicalId":262512,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Long Island Systems, Applications and Technology Conference","volume":"378 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132779471","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Microsoft's Vista (“Vista”) is one change that has brought new challenges for digital investigations, particularly relating to new mechanisms of encryption and general security. This paper will identify those challenges and prescribe possible solutions. More specifically this research proposes practical ways in which the digital investigator can retrieve critical file metadata, explore file systems and record log files. The focus of this paper will be on the changes to Microsoft's New Technology File System (NTFS). In general, Vista has placed a greater emphasis on file sharing across the Internet so XML file formats are more pervasive. Security, and more specifically encryption, is more prevalent in Vista and so this paper will focus on changes to Windows Mail. Although there is no empirical evidence, it appears as though prosecutors heavily rely on electronic mail evidence. With the continuous expansion in size of flash memory, it was imperative to note changes to the digital footprint left by USB thumbdrives as well as the impact of Microsoft's new volatile memory expansion tool - readyboost. Log files are also a crucial source of evidence in computer forensics investigations and these are discussed in great detail as changes in Vista have changed the nature of this evidence. This research paper will discuss the relevance of changes to evidence in Vista by highlighting the use of certain evidentiary files in court cases. Finally, the implications of changes brought about by Vista will be made apparent through experiments conducted with bit-stream imaging tools utilized by law enforcement and other computer forensics examiners. Vista has notable implications for computer forensics investigations. However, this research will prepare the digital investigator for the transition to the Vista operating system and the transformation of digital evidence associated with this new platform.","PeriodicalId":262512,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE Long Island Systems, Applications and Technology Conference","volume":"22 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120818559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
