OFDM is a good candidate for DSRC applications in harsh mobile environments, with time and frequency-selective channels. This doubly spread channel renders channel estimation, needed for the equalizer when using coherent detection, a challenging problem. We focus on the the channel estimation methods for coherent detection of QAM signals. Two adaptive algorithms, NLMS and RLS are considered for the rotating pilot (RP) scheme and the repeated reference (RR) scheme to track the channel variations. Further maximum likelihood (ML) deterministic channel estimation is applied jointly with the above methods to get optimal channel estimation. The combination of NLMS and ML is best suited for an OFDM-DSRC modem with rather low complexity and a performance loss of only 1 dB with respect to a perfect channel knowledge situation.","PeriodicalId":260472,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE International Conference on Personal Wireless Communications. The detector that is proposed for uplink code-division multiple access systems uses the generalized multistage detector to produce the estimates of the received data. The regenerated multiuser interference is then weighted proportionally to the reliabilities and subtracted. The performance of the matched filter, the conventional multistage multiuser detector, the partial parallel interference cancellation detector and the proposed new detector are evaluated in Rayleigh fading channels. Finally, bit error rate results are presented versus signal-to-noise ratio. The main characteristic of the proposed 3G solution is to satisfy the IMT-2000 requirements. A layered structure based on the Open System Interconnection (OSI) model is discussed to provide multimedia services. The functions of a flexible and efficient MAC/RLC (medium access control/radio link control) sublayer are identified. The paper is concluded by presenting the proposed implementations of the MAC/RLC sublayer in the 3G UMTS system. The MAC protocol has to resolve contention between mobiles accessing the same physical resources and also has to manage the packet access procedure. Since 3G systems will offer services to mobiles having varying QoS requirements, the MAC will need to be capable of managing the access demands of different users and different service classes. This can be achieved by using reservation and priority schemes. Delay sensitive services can use a capacity reservation scheme to guarantee quality of service. It is shown that this scheme provides a reduction in overall complexity as compared to that employing a demodulator followed by a trellis decoder of RAC code and a Huffman decoder. The trellis of the combined codes employing BFSK/MPSK modulation are designed and implemented and their error performances are compared with those employing coded as well as uncoded MPSK modulation. It is likely that the Bluetooth specification may be adopted in the IEEE 802.15 Wireless Personal Area Network standard. In this paper, we present an analysis of the Bluetooth physical layer. We consider a single room office environment (LOS propagation), with a number of piconets distributed in it, In the present work we have focussed only on the interference between piconets. Assuming a uniform distribution of Bluetooth devices in the room, we provide an analysis of the outage probability as a function of the number of overlapping piconets. We then characterise the temporal correlation in the outage process. This leads to an approximation for the mean outage duration. An iterative approximation to nonlinear MMSE multiuser detection, proposed earlier for single-antenna systems, is applied in this paper to CDMA systems with random spreading and multiple receive antennas. The proposed receiver iterates between a bank of nonlinear MMSE beamformers and an interference canceler. The computational complexity of the proposed receiver, including that of the proposed adaptive array response estimation algorithm, is quadratic in the number of antennas, and linear in the number of users and the number of stages of cancellation. Simulation results demonstrate that substantial capacity improvements can be obtained using this receiver with just a single stage of cancellation, compared to receivers that use linear MMSE beamformers and no interference cancellation, and those using interference cancellation but no beamforming.","PeriodicalId":260472,"journal":{"name":"2000 IEEE International Conference on Personal Wireless Communications.
