However, considering the low efficiency in the conversion from light to electrical energy, the optimization of the power electronics converters which deliver the energy from the panels to the electrical grid has fundamental importance in terms of overall efficiency. One of the key elements in a PV system, designed to increase the efficiency, is the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm which finds the operating point where the maximum power is extracted from the panels. Several MPPT algorithms have been proposed in literature, ranging from the simple but powerful perturb and observe to very sophisticated algorithms involving artificial neural networks. All these methods have been designed with a very slow dynamics hence they cannot follow accurately abrupt modifications of the power curve produced when the irradiation changes. In this paper, a simple MPPT algorithm based on the modification of the switching signals and the analysis of the resulting voltage and power deviation is proposed. This algorithm allows to follow accurately the changes of maximum power point produced by fast variations in the irradiation. Simulation results to validate the proposed algorithm and comparisons with previously published algorithm are shown.","PeriodicalId":259750,"journal":{"name":"2017 11th IEEE International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133948506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed technique integrates an input parallel output series (IPOS) configuration of DC-DC flyback converters with distributed digital voltage mode control. PV modules in the string are interfaced with IPOS configuration of flyback converters. Each dedicated converter is regulated at the MPP voltage of corresponding PV module while supplying differential current to the string to keep the string current maximum under partially shaded condition. Dedicated voltage mode controller is implemented using eight bit PIC microcontroller (PIC18F452). A hardware prototype of a PV string is developed by connecting two PV modules in series. The experimental results are demonstrated for static and dynamic operation of IPOS configuration of DC-DC flyback converters under partially shaded condition of PV string.","PeriodicalId":259750,"journal":{"name":"2017 11th IEEE International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114937591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Average transmission distances and active and reactive power losses increase, because RES are mainly installed at sites with a high yield of primary energy. This development affects the voltage stability of the system. To address these challenges, a meshed high voltage direct current (HVDC) overlay system might be used. Within this publication an optimization algorithm is proposed to determine optimal converter operating points. Thereby an iterative load flow approach determines voltage stability limit. A 58 AC busbar transmission system is used where 9 converters are applied forming a HVDC overlay system. Results show that the optimization approach is able to determine optimal operating points regarding static voltage stability as well as regarding overall system losses.","PeriodicalId":259750,"journal":{"name":"2017 11th IEEE International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"180 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122457783","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the results of multiple CIGRE Working Groups and literature publications, it appears that discrepancies between measured short-term flicker severity values and user complaints can be reduced by making modifications to the so-called Block 5 processing algorithm. For such modifications to be fairly considered in the revision of any standard, it is necessary to establish both theoretical and practical/application bases. Prior work has established theoretical bases for changes in Block 5; in this paper are reported the results obtained from modified algorithms used at multiple sites for extended periods of time. Particular attention has been paid to quantify the extent of the differences obtained from the practical perspective of flicker limit compliance.","PeriodicalId":259750,"journal":{"name":"2017 11th IEEE International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121865402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the current residential devices, which contain power electronics (PE), produce harmonic emissions whose presence in the distribution system originates an increase of the losses in the wiring as well as a higher apparent power demand. The Time Use Survey (2009–10) conducted by the National Statistical Institute in Spain was used to obtain information about the activities taking place at the Spanish dwellings and directly related to the usage of some common residential appliances. Based on this information, as well as models of different types of household appliances, the active and non-active power annually demanded by this equipment in the Spanish residential sector were determined. Despite the negligible contribution of a single appliance, the aggregated effect of them, with a total annual energy demand greater than 19,000 GWh, can be significant enough to be considered in any energy efficiency program. Moreover, the research depicts that a reduction from 20% to 5% in the distribution system of the total harmonic distortion (THDi) can lead to a significant reduction of energy losses, as well as more than one thousand million Euros in energy savings. Single-phase power electronic loads, harmonics, economic impact, residential sector.","PeriodicalId":259750,"journal":{"name":"2017 11th IEEE International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"1847 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129847736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Major portion of the reactive power is managed by the thyristor based elements and the remaining reactive power is managed by the cascaded qZSI. The main advantage here is that the major part of power generated from PV array will be supplied as active power to the utility grid. The rating of cascaded qZSI for reactive power is equal to half of least rated thyristor based SVC component in the system. Master-Slave Controller for controlling voltage at output of quasi impedance network of individual modules and the converter current is implemented. Saving in inverter's rating with the proposed topology in comparison to using only cascaded qZSI (for both active and reactive power management) is also provided. The proposed topology is simulated using Matlab/Simulink and the proposed concept is validated. The hardware setup developed and the experimental results are presented that matches well with the simulation results and theoretical findings.","PeriodicalId":259750,"journal":{"name":"2017 11th IEEE International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116336461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The capability of high voltage clusters to meet these requirements is evaluated in this paper taking different approaches into account. The feasible contribution of distributed energy resources to provide reactive power is analyzed for two high voltage clusters, which are based on real network data. The load flow is carried out for every hour of a year. Two different reactive power characteristics are introduced and analyzed towards their possible reactive power flexibility. Current German guidelines limit the possible reactive power of the distributed energy resources, while they have a bigger potential as shown with the second characteristic. Furthermore, an economic comparison with mechanically switched capacitors is performed. A specific reactive power exchange boundary is chosen to achieve comparable situations. The costs calculation considers investment, operating and maintenance costs. Each network cluster has its own economic solution. In general, the costs of reactive power supply from distributed energy resources rises with the period of use. Nevertheless, it is shown that distributed energy resources could fulfill an economical competitive reactive power management.","PeriodicalId":259750,"journal":{"name":"2017 11th IEEE International Conference on Compatibility, Power Electronics and Power Engineering (CPE-POWERENG)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124518198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A comparison between a single phase and two phase system is conducted to highlight the merits of the two phase approach considering a constant input power in terms of efficiency, temperature uniformity and flexibility for heat distribution. The study shows that by continually adjusting the current and phase shift in the two supply units, the coupling effects is minimised and the system is able to run under better performances.
