They begin with a discussion of discourse community as theoretical background to the observations made. Next they analyze the role that the student plays in the laboratory setting and in the design course setting. They conclude with an appraisal of student performance in the industry setting. The authors' analysis is based on: (1) a comparison of design course experiences and academic laboratory experiences, (2) observation and participation in three design course projects that were sponsored by industry, and (3) interviews with the faculty monitors and industry sponsors of the projects. A comparison of student laboratory and design project experiences reveals that the distinguishing characteristics of the design project experience that are similar to industry experiences include solving of open-ended problems, acquiring background knowledge, and recognizing industry priorities.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":259373,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference 'Communicating to the World.',","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123360939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author outlines the planning, decision, acquisition, implementation, training, and various problem-solving steps involved with shifting the P&P documentation environment from dedicated word processing workstations to a PC-based system with capabilities to support all standard desktop publishing software. To date, the P&P experience is that desktop publishing capabilities do allow for increased document quality and, therefore, positive departmental visibility. However, expanded support functions also result from the implementation of this technology, and these functions can be negatively impacted by a number of factors, including the lack of adequate vendor support.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":259373,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference 'Communicating to the World.',","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114091493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If the proposal is illustrated, the pictures are usually viewed first. Graphics can establish the essence of the message before the proposal is completely reviewed. For this to be done effectively, the project must be broken down into a series of specific tasks, each of which is envisioned pictorially. Mental pictures are then recorded on a planning work sheet known as the storyboard. A sequence of storyboards makes it possible to review together graphics and text before the proposal is written. The proposal illustrated with captioned graphics leads the reader to anticipate the story contained in the text.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":259373,"journal":{"name":"International Professional Communication Conference 'Communicating to the World.',","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1989-10-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126124590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
