Aimé belongs to a race more ancient than that of the prince, therefore more noble. The chapter then highlights Charlus and Morel's automobile excursions which are usually confined to a lunch or dinner along the coast. Morel, who believes himself to be a thousand times more important than Charlus, completely misunderstands the baron's arrogant information about the aristocracy. The one thing that Morel sets above the nobility is his artistic reputation and what others might think of him in the violin class. The chapter then further elaborates on Charlus's and Brichot's debate on the literary worth of Balzac's novels. It concludes with the Narrator's discussion about his friendship with the Comte de Crécy, a gentleman without means but of extreme distinction.","PeriodicalId":259197,"journal":{"name":"Sodom and Gomorrah","volume":"231 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123055599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses mainly on the fortuitous encounter of Charlus and Jupien. The scene is stamped with a strangeness or a naturalness, the beauty of which steadily increases. Charlus has encountered the tailor with the good fortune reserved for men of the baron's type, the men predestined to exist in order that they may have their share of sensual pleasure on this earth: the men who care only for elderly gentlemen. The chapter then shifts to demonstrate the conversation between Charlus and Jupien about other men in the neighborhood. It emphasizes the descendants of the Sodomites who have established themselves throughout the entire world.","PeriodicalId":259197,"journal":{"name":"Sodom and Gomorrah","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132622387","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It recounts his decision to postpone the conversation to the next day near Parville. The chapter also highlights Albertine's revelation about her close connection to Mlle Vinteuil and her friend. Focusing on the Narrator's agony at sunrise, the chapter recalls the image of the profanation scene the Narrator's witnessed long ago at Montjouvain. The chapter then shifts to highlight the Narrator's request, grief, and a story about a woman he was to have married. Finally, the chapter describes the Narrator's sudden reversal in favor of Albertine. It then chronicles the Narrator's new journey with Albertine for Paris.","PeriodicalId":259197,"journal":{"name":"Sodom and Gomorrah","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129123020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It shows how Albertine begins to inspire the Narrator to seek happiness once again. The chapter also discusses the Narrator's encounter with Cottard in the little casino filled with girls, and with Mme de Cambremer, who arrived with her daughter-in-law, Mme de Cambremer-Legrandin. It then shifts to recount the quarrel between the Narrator and Albertine involving Saint-Loup. The chapter mentions the Narrator's jealous suspicions to two “coursières,” — Marie Gineste and Céleste Albaret. It investigates why Mme Verdurin has had quite enough of the Dreyfus Affair: Dreyfusism was triumphant politically but not socially.","PeriodicalId":259197,"journal":{"name":"Sodom and Gomorrah","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115327111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It narrates his meeting with the Duc de Châtellerault, M. de Charlus, Mme de Vaugoubert, and the Marquis de Vaugoubert, one of the few men in society who happens to be in what is called at Sodom the “confidence” of M. de Charlus. After recounting the Narrator's involvement in the arrival of the Duc and Duchesse de Guermantes, the chapter then shifts to outline the Narrator's second stay at Balbec, where he and Albertine make frequent visits, along with the members of the little clan, to La Raspelière, a hilltop villa owned by the Marquis de Cambremer. These “Wednesdays” at the Mistress's allow for many scenes of social satire. The chapter recounts the Narrator's experiences of involuntary memory that makes him suffer great sorrow and remorse: he is suddenly overwhelmed by his long-delayed grief over the death of his grandmother.","PeriodicalId":259197,"journal":{"name":"Sodom and Gomorrah","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114302870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
