Chapter 4

Abstract

This chapter tracks the decision of the Narrator to make a definite break with Albertine. It recounts his decision to postpone the conversation to the next day near Parville. The chapter also highlights Albertine's revelation about her close connection to Mlle Vinteuil and her friend. Focusing on the Narrator's agony at sunrise, the chapter recalls the image of the profanation scene the Narrator's witnessed long ago at Montjouvain. The chapter then shifts to highlight the Narrator's request, grief, and a story about a woman he was to have married. Finally, the chapter describes the Narrator's sudden reversal in favor of Albertine. It then chronicles the Narrator's new journey with Albertine for Paris.
