The electromechanical response equations of such films are derived for their operation as sensors and actuators. By assuming reasonable charge distributions and charge densities, the calculated transducer constants are in good agreement with the measured values. Water sorption/desorption isotherms both in equilibrium (ESI) and dynamic (DSI) were used to measure isothermal water uptake and diffusion coefficients. Water sorption has a significant influence on the /spl gamma/ and /spl beta/ relaxations. With increasing water content the MWS peak shifts to lower temperatures. For all samples studied the amount of water at saturation was found to decrease with increasing temperature and SAN content in the blends.","PeriodicalId":257431,"journal":{"name":"10th International Symposium on Electrets (ISE 10). Since the piezoelectric coefficients of PZT and P(VDF-TrFE) have opposite signs, the PZT and P(VDF-TrFE) phases in the nanocomposites were poled in opposite directions in order to enhance the piezoelectric activity. The PZT powder, prepared by a sol-gel process, has a tetragonal structure. The ratio of the [002] and [200] X-ray diffraction peaks was used as a measure of the degree of poling in the ceramic phase. The piezoelectric coefficient of the nanocomposite film was measured by a laser interferometry technique. A needle type hydrophone for the calibration of medical ultrasonic transducers was fabricated using the nanocomposite as the sensing element and its performance was evaluated.","PeriodicalId":257431,"journal":{"name":"10th International Symposium on Electrets (ISE 10). Dielectric dilatometry was used to detect glass- and structural phase-transitions in these nonpolar polymers: PLD-PTFE and microporous PTFE foils show the characteristic first-order phase transitions of PTFE. The fibrillar structure of the microporous PTFE results in large electrostrictive coefficients. Both the PTFE-like materials and the hybrid PTFE-PFCB electrets show excellent charge-storage stability and surpass conventional PTFE in performance. Applications can be anticipated in miniaturized electret devices as well as sensitive electret hydrophones.","PeriodicalId":257431,"journal":{"name":"10th International Symposium on Electrets (ISE 10). The variation of permittivity with temperature is attributed to thermal expansion in the lower temperature region to the orientation of dipolar molecules in the neighbourhood of Tg and random thermal motion of molecules above Tg. The dielectric losses exhibit one peak. Doping with acrylic acid is found to affect the magnitude and position of the loss peak. An explanation for this has been attempted on the basis of charge transfer complex formation.","PeriodicalId":257431,"journal":{"name":"10th International Symposium on Electrets (ISE 10). Measurements of electrical current were performed during the electron irradiation. The irradiated front electrode was grounded while the rear electrode was positively biased. The experimental results were fitted by models which considered two different media: the irradiated region (I) and the non-irradiated one (NI). In the later, NI-region, the intrinsic electrical properties of the material were considered. In the I-region, on the other hand, effects of irradiation, as carrier generation, recombination effect and trapping-detrapping phenomenon play a fundamental role in the transport process. Beside the explanation of the experimental behavior observed in each material, the theoretical treatment provided important electrical parameters.","PeriodicalId":257431,"journal":{"name":"10th International Symposium on Electrets (ISE 10). Mechanisms such as noninteracting dipole reorientation, Maxwell-Wagner relaxation, protonic percolation, are envisaged as responsible for the peaks associated with water in a variety of configurations. The plastifying role played by water in macromolecular phase transitions, induced by the water network rearrangement, have been monitored through the careful analysis of the TSDC spectra. This could be further verified by extending the frequency range down to 10-5 Hz in order to measure the changes at the expected peak maximum. TSDC results are however inconclusive whether the measured current is due to dipoles or space charge. The observed difference between charge release from the two samples surfaces indicates that there is an asymmetrical distribution of space charge or polarization. This agrees with the optical microscope observations showing that one of the sides has a greater water tree density than the other. A difference on the initial TSDC current level (near 20/spl deg/C) appears to be more dependent on the short-circuit time than on the poling time. If a TSDC is performed without poling the measured current is near zero, revealing that space charges have been removed or that the dipoles have been disoriented.","PeriodicalId":257431,"journal":{"name":"10th International Symposium on Electrets (ISE 10). A dependence of the physical properties of the composite films on the polyurethane structure, the nature of the oxidizing agent and the polypyrrole content was observed comparatively with the untreated polyurethane cationomer films. Insertion of polypyrrole increases the d.c. conductivity with about six magnitude orders. Dielectric relaxation spectra are slightly affected by the oxidizing agent but more influenced by the polypyrrole content. Tensile strength characteristics such as tensile stress and elongation at break decrease by incorporation of the polypyrrole. These effects were attributed to enhanced phase mixing by electrostatic interactions of the polyurethane cationomer with oxidizing agents and polypyrrole.","PeriodicalId":257431,"journal":{"name":"10th International Symposium on Electrets (ISE 10).
