It includes an introduction to hypnosis, and provides a definition and, history of the method, as well as a, guide to using hypnosis interventions and their utility and applications for sleep disorders. Some of the sleep disorders found to be effectively treated by hypnosis include nightmares, sleep walking, night terrors, and parasomnia overlap disorder. The chapter also overviews guided imagery and, provides an example and various uses for guided imagery in sleep disorders. The chapter concludes by reviewing the various differences and uses of hypnosis and guided imagery, including the greater research and wider use of guided imagery in its application to sleep disorders.","PeriodicalId":257121,"journal":{"name":"Integrative Sleep Medicine","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114121459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a variety of sleep disorders, abnormal movements may result from pathological arousals, whereas in sleep-related movement disorders the movement itself is the pathological event. Sleep-related movement disorders are typically characterized by simple, often repetitive and stereotyped movements that occur at sleep onset or during sleep and may disrupt sleep. These include restless legs syndrome, periodic limb movements, sleep-related bruxism, sleep-related leg cramps, and sleep starts. These are common disorders that may be barely noticed or, as in the case of severe restless legs syndrome, can be life-altering. Proper diagnosis is essential because effective treatments are usually available.","PeriodicalId":257121,"journal":{"name":"Integrative Sleep Medicine","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125689816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cognitive and psychiatric comorbidities commonly associated with these disorders are also highlighted. The chapter reviews the current gaps in our understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment options of these disorders and discusses the need for considering an integrative approach, one combining complementary and conventional medicine, to treat these disorders. Recommendations are also presented for future research that may improve diagnosis and treatment.","PeriodicalId":257121,"journal":{"name":"Integrative Sleep Medicine","volume":"134 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123205010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unfortunately, insufficient sleep and insomnia are increasingly common problems both in the United States and around the world. Poor sleep is strongly associated with diabetes, obesity, and other cardiometabolic diseases. Pro-inflammatory states associated with disrupted sleep schedules and insufficient sleep are hypothesized as risk factors for cancer. Sleep disturbance impairs cognition and memory, increasing the likelihood of accidents and drowsy driving. Poor sleep is a common and exacerbating feature of many mental illnesses and may impair treatment response. Finally, the burden of insufficient sleep is calculated both in financial costs and increased mortality. Given this evidence, clinicians should recognize and treat disturbed sleep to decrease the risk of disease and improve overall quality of life.","PeriodicalId":257121,"journal":{"name":"Integrative Sleep Medicine","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125032454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
