While existing works mostly focus on the comparison on cloud services, we argue that proximity also plays a very important role when deciding in which cloud infrastructures to deploy the applications. In this paper, we design and evaluate the system, we call CSS, for automatic selection of cloud infrastructures. It not only considers the deployment cost, but also takes into account the location of cloud infrastructures, application clients and related applications, and the interaction among application components when selecting the cloud infrastructures. In order to address the scalability issue when the number of data centers and application components is large, we propose a stepwise application placement algorithm. Through experiments, we show that the algorithm is able to find a near-optimal placement policy within very short period of time.","PeriodicalId":256633,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131093627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However most of the initiatives designed to get students interested in STEM fields are constrained by floor space, budget, or driving distance. These factors, in combination, act to limit the affordability and accessibility of research opportunities in STEM fields to students in schools faced with increasingly limited budgets or lacking access to experienced STEM teachers. Since a trained STEM workforce is crucial to tackling research challenges of importance to the Air Force and the nation, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Discovery Lab program has developed a Virtual Reality Academy (VRA) program utilizing open source virtual reality software, Open Simulator, to create a virtual collaboration environment called Virtual (reality) Discovery Center (VDC). This 16-region VDC is the key to the Discovery Lab's 1,000 Student Outreach initiative designed to greatly expand the Discovery Lab's ability to make project-based “hands-on” research experience accessible to students across the country via the Open Simulator collaboration technologies. This paper highlights many of the successful efforts to establish VDC Virtual Learning Academies in areas such as Biology, Nanotechnology, Computer Vision, and Mobile Computing (smartphone apps). This paper is not a scientific study of Open Simulator as a collaboration tool for STEM but rather a descriptive overview of its successful implementation locally and nationally - suggesting its potential as a game-changer in STEM education and research.","PeriodicalId":256633,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132695925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, an intelligent residential home energy management system is discussed. A Master Energy Controller was developed to forecast future power demand based on user's life style and environmental/social factors affecting power consumption; this controller uses a branch and bound scheduling algorithm for managing appliance runtime schedules. Further, time-of-use pricing is employed to close the loop between the residential customer and the utility company. The focus of this paper is on how the appliance network architecture and master controller can link to the outside world through the internet. A gateway architecture is used for this interface and details of the communication process and message configurations are presented. This architecture provides a simple, yet powerful approach in linking each intelligent residential energy management system to an energy grid with the goal of improving energy usage.","PeriodicalId":256633,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS)","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133243703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solving such problems has evolved into using paradigms like MapReduce on large clusters of compute nodes. More recently, a growing number of “Deep Data” problems have arisen where it is the relationships between objects, and not necessarily the collections of objects, that are important, and for which the traditional implementation techniques are unsatisfactory. This talk addresses a study of a class of such “challenge problems” first formulated by David Bayliss of LexisNexis, and what are their execution characteristics on both current and future architectures. The goal is to discover, to at least a first order approximation, what are the tall poles preventing a speedup of their solution. A variety or architectures are considered, ranging from standard server blades in large scale configurations, to emerging variations that leverage simpler and more energy efficient chip sets, through systems built on 3D chip stacks, and on to new architectures that were designed from the ground up to “follow the links.” Such architectures are considered for two variants of such problems: a traditional partitioned data approach where data is “pre-boiled” to provide fast response, and one that uses very large graphs in very large shared memories. The results are not necessarily intuitive; the bottlenecks in such problems are not where current systems have the bulk of their capabilities or costs, nor where obvious near term upgrades will have major effects. Instead, it appears that only highly scalable memory-intensive architectures offer the potential for truly major gains in application performance.","PeriodicalId":256633,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116982055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Emergency management is the lynchpin on which effective cooperation and coordination depend. By working together, a proactive plan can be formulated for future disaster management activities among the countries. Moreover, sharing of experiences and exchange of views among the experts of different countries has the potential to result in a model that may be used for disaster prevention and mitigation all over the world. Scientific and disaster mitigation organizations should seek to develop working relationships based on mutual trust and the recognition of differing characteristics, goals and needs. Regular contact among the different groups before, during, and after the disasters would greatly enhance this potential. Disaster mitigation organizations should take advantage of opportunities to work together to provide relevant training for the emergency management personnel to enhance disaster mitigation/relief efforts and the timeliness, quality and accuracy of reporting about the disasters and results of our efforts to affect them.","PeriodicalId":256633,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124070866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New-sell/cross-sell/up-sell opportunity identification and capture for Travel Agents. Volume and velocity are two of the three V's that define Big Data [1]. This is especially true in the global travel industry, where billions of messages are being passed between travel agents and travel providers on a continual basis, arriving at rates of hundreds/thousands per second (this includes for example availability requests, rate information, bookings, changes to booking and cancellations.) This presents a challenge for traditional Business Intelligence reporting based on relational databases since a `state' needs to be maintained continually for multiple millions of bookings, and even more so for advanced predictive analytics where the task is not only to retrieve data, but to compute complex derived variables and statistical models based on continuously evolving patterns in the underlying data. The only solution is to use a distributed platform that can scale to the volume and velocity required [2]. In this talk we will discuss case studies in the travel industry. The goal is to provide a comprehensive suite of tools to support travel agents identify and capture new-sell/crosssell/up-sell opportunities from this continuous flow of data. This includes extraction of `true performance' for each agent/agency necessitating clustering to construct like-for-like peer-groups based on the travel fingerprints for bookings being made, through to the real-time recommendations of specific named hotels to go with selected air segments that is based on sophisticated collaborative filtering as well as a K-Nearest Neighbors approach on a feature space calculated over a rolling period of historical bookings. In this article we propose and evaluate a method for computing aggregate thoughts of arguments on individual arguments, which represents individual thoughts, in an argumentation tree and further classifying arguments based on relationships between its aggregate thoughts and individual thoughts. A novel approach is developed to derive collective determination of an argument based on total support and attack that an argument receives in the argumentation tree. The collective determination value and the strength of an argument are used to analyze the relationship between aggregate thought and individual thought of arguments and cluster the arguments. The decision maker will be able to review clusters of arguments with opposing collective thoughts and supporting collective thoughts versus their individual thoughts. We have carried out an experiment to evaluate the proposed method, and the experimental results show that the proposed method is effective.","PeriodicalId":256633,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131339168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, usability problems and the multiplicity of tools hinder work instead of supporting it. We present a requirement analysis of complex maintenance activities carried out with maintainers in the cleanroom of a semiconductor fabrication plant. We conducted a contextual inquiry, methodologically adapted to the general requirements of the cleanroom context and the maintenance activities in particular. In this study, we identified general tasks of the maintainers, all tools they need to report and to communicate their work, and the maintainers' attitude towards them. Based on these findings, implications are given on how to reduce the number of reporting tools and a conceptual design for a future maintenance tool is presented. We will show the feasibility of user-centered design in the complex context of a semiconductor fabrication plant in order to improve interface qualities of existing reporting tools.","PeriodicalId":256633,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121430827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While many of these mechanisms have been well studied, usually they represent isolated solutions requiring knowledge of low-level networking programming for implementation. In this regard, there is still a lack of universal, easily deployable and extensible framework that enables rapid creation of complete systems from scratch. In this paper we present a middleware framework allowing an application developer to easily implement and deploy custom CVEs for specific tasks without direct low-level network programming. The framework provides a high-level application programming interface to create, manage and distribute objects in a shared virtual environment. The software architecture, basic features and functionality, overall performance and possible practical applications of the proposed framework are discussed.","PeriodicalId":256633,"journal":{"name":"2013 International Conference on Collaboration Technologies and Systems (CTS)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122341552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
