The novel per-hop-optimization strategy aims to reduce the total transmission power of the network while meeting the individual end-to-end outage probability constraint of each commodity, i.e. for each link of the network. It utilizes the Greedy edge-coloring algorithm to determine reused orthogonal subbands for overlapping hops and allows a distributed implementation per hop. In comparison to other bandwidth allocation strategies like equal or dynamic bandwidth for each commodity, our per-hop-bandwidth-allocation (PHBA) approach uses the bandwidth in a near-optimum way and reduces the total transmission power significantly.","PeriodicalId":255495,"journal":{"name":"2008 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134271822","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This model is a 2-dimensional (2D) model where the propagating plane waves are assumed to arrive only from the azimuthal direction and does not include the elevation domain. As a result of this assumption the derived angle of arrival (AoA) distribution is characterized only by the azimuth direction of these waves. In this paper the AoA distribution of multipaths is modeled in a novel 3-dimensional (3D) approach. The Von Mises Fisher (VMF) and Fisher Bingham (FB5) probability density functions (PDF) are used to describe their distribution within the propagation environment in azimuth and co-latitude. More specifically two separate models are proposed. The first model uses a mixture of VMF distributions and the second one uses a mixture of FB5 and VMF distributions. The parameters of the individual cluster of scatterers within the mixture are derived and an estimation of those parameters is achieved using the expectation maximization (EM) algorithm. The two models are compared. The results indicate that both mixture models perform really well. However the FB5 mixture model is proposed because it is more flexible. Both models are validated with the use of MIMO experimental data obtained from a measurement campaign in Germany.","PeriodicalId":255495,"journal":{"name":"2008 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133638490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Increase of bandwidth efficiency normally sacrifices power efficiency, which is also important. Multiantenna systems offer the potential to improve both at the expense of utilizing multiple antennas preferably at both ends of a transmission link. We are reviewing generic performance measures for such systems in single link scenarios based on long term (LT) channel state information at the transmitter (TCSI). Extending the considerations to multiuser single cell scenarios, instantaneous TCSI will be necessary to fully exploit what multiple antennas can offer. Here we consider the problem of how to partition resources optimally to accommodate feedback of CSI from receiver to transmitter. Further extension to cellular multiuser multiantenna systems confronts us with the problem of intercell interference (ICI) which due to scheduling is a nonstationary random process. There is a huge improvement in cell sum rate to be gained, if we can make the ICI power predictable. We focus only on reviewing generic results telling us what can be achieved with multiple antennas but will not go into detailed realizations thereof.","PeriodicalId":255495,"journal":{"name":"2008 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125866752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We demonstrate switching between various transmission modes in the downlink steered by a quantized feedback channel. Real time results show that an OFDMA proportional fair scheduler based on the quantized feedback achieves significant performance gains over axed OFDM-TDMA system. However, the proportional fair scheduler results in user starvation periods in the event of correlated feedbacks. To this end, we formulate a downlink scheduling problem with zero-starvation as a short term fairness in Kulkami, S.S., et al (2003) objective. This is an integer programming (IP) problem. In this paper, we present a simple heuristic algorithm for this problem for K = 2 users. Significant system sum rate gains are shown while still fulfilling the fairness objective.","PeriodicalId":255495,"journal":{"name":"2008 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129071972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method performs the prediction in a transformed domain obtained via the higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD), namely on the transformed tensor elements. This is followed by the inverse transformation of the predicted transformed tensor elements onto a basis corresponding to the signal subspace. To verify our strategy, we compare the results in terms of the normalized mean square error using a known prediction method, e.g., a Wiener filter, applied to the transformed tensor elements with the identical method applied directly to the channel coefficients. The results of our investigation show that the tensor-based prediction method outperforms the direct prediction method. Although we concentrate in this contribution on the prediction in the time domain, this framework can also be used for the estimation in other domains.","PeriodicalId":255495,"journal":{"name":"2008 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132263472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this case, the precoders designed for those streams based on covariance channel state information (CSI) will be identical, therefore, they can not separate the user successfully. To overcome this, we modify the covariance matrices by keeping the eigenvectors unchanged and choosing one eigenvalue per stream if the number of streams equals to the rank of the covariance matrix. Otherwise, the eigenvalues will be divided into different groups with the rule making the sums of each group as similar as possible. Then, the precoders are designed based on the modified covariance matrices with the constraint of total transmit power. The proposed method is tested and simulation results show that it works well and can improve the bit error ratio (BER) of the system significantly.","PeriodicalId":255495,"journal":{"name":"2008 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131096543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advantage of using XPD cross-polarised antennas in cellular MIMO-OFDM systems is that XPD antennas save costs and space achieved by a more compact antenna design. The throughput performance is generally considered to be similar to co-polarised antennas with pre-coding. In this paper we show the achievable gains of using cross-polarised antennas as compared to co-polarised antennas at the base station. These cross-polarised antennas are used for adaptive MIMO transmission for typical outdoor scenarios. Our results are based on real-time multiuser (MU) multi-antenna capacity measurements taken with a MIMO-OFDMA system with parameters close to the current 3G-Long-Term-Evolution (LTE) standard. Downlink transmission is considered in a single-cell outdoor scenario. We demonstrate the significant effect of polarisation on the overall system performance, especially on user sum rates when fairness scheduling in OFDMA is applied.","PeriodicalId":255495,"journal":{"name":"2008 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134310325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of soft-output channel decoders enables forwarding reliability information for the decoded bits. This soft information can be forwarded in different ways, e.g. by transmission of the log likelihood ratios (LLRs) normalized to the power constraint. In this paper transmitting expectation values after decoding, the so-called decode-estimate-forward (DEF) scheme, will be shown to be the best choice in terms of the mean squared uncorrelated error at the receiver. Additionally, it will be shown that LLR combining is superior to maximum ratio combining at the receiver as the overall disturbance of the received signal is not Gaussian in the case of DEF. Furthermore, in the uncoded case LLR combing also improves the performance in terms of effective signal-to-noise ratio and bit error rate.","PeriodicalId":255495,"journal":{"name":"2008 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124945844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The interference cancelation is carried out in three steps. After canceling the deterministic channels (pilot and synchronization channel), one user data stream is reconstructed by an MMSE equalizer. This data stream is transmitted over a replicated \"virtual\" channel and its output subtracted from the received signal. From the remaining received signal we reconstruct the second data stream by a second equalizer. Our performance evaluation is based on the physical layer coded data throughput. The interference cancelation receiver shows large performance gain (approx. 2.0 dB) over the state-of-the-art MMSE equalizer while the complexity is only increased slightly.","PeriodicalId":255495,"journal":{"name":"2008 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124116758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
