This means, that for these systems, end-to-end system design comes from the top down, creating a situation in which all fragility rises up to the largest scales of the system; this is a result of these systems being centrally controlled, often at the top of a hierarchy. In order for enterprise systems such as these to augment or repair themselves, they must undergo a catastrophic, enterprise-wide failure and be reengineered, once again by top-down direction [1]. This is the opposite of resilient system design and represents a situation where federal IT can be very inefficient. The current climate in the US of proactive and aggressive infrastructure consolidation via the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI) and the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) only serves to further incentivize system designers to construct extremely fragile systems at both the application and infrastructure layers. This fragility puts these systems at greater risk for enterprise failure. An example of a critical federal enterprise IT system's design and resulting fragility when perturbed (i.e., via consolidation and modernization) will be examined in this paper. Engineering guidelines from a complex systems perspective will be recommended to counter this resulting fragility. These guidelines will be from both an IT and government policy point of view and are generalized for applicability to systems engineering outside the scope of just IT systems.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"217 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122096708","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Exergy analysis allows for comparison between different system designs, and allows for comparison of subsystem efficiencies within system designs. This paper explores the relationship between the fundamental rocket equation and an exergy balance equation. A previously derived exergy equation related to rocket systems is investigated, and a higher fidelity analysis is derived. The exergy assessments will enable informed, value-based decision making when comparing alternative rocket system designs, and will allow the most efficient configuration among candidate configurations to be determined.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"112 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128821922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the transmitter end, two different chaotic systems are coupled and used to construct a new hyperchaotic system. One of the outputs of the hyperchaotic system is used as a carrier for the encrypted data. At the receiving end, the discrete-time Regularized Least Square (RLS) estimator is used to reconstruct the chaotic signal and hence retrieve the encoded data. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123782437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After the identified need or opportunity has been translated into stakeholder requirements, and after as many as possible potential solutions or design concepts have been identified, the optimum one is to be selected. The traditional approach is to choose the design concept that promises to result in the system that better meets the stated requirements. The problem is that frequently the selection is not confirmed to be robust, which eventually means that the system will not achieve the effectiveness desired by the customer. This paper proposes a comprehensive sensitivity analysis to ensure the robustness of the selected design concept. The selection is normally made with the aid of mathematical models, whose inputs are subjective and/or just reasonably accurate predictions. Ensuring that the output of the model is not affected by reasonable changes in the inputs is essential, yet this aspect is far too often neglected because of lack of awareness of its importance or even because of knowledge on how to actually do it. This paper stresses the importance of rightly conducting this so critical step in the systems engineering framework and shows a four-step approach to performing a comprehensive sensitivity analysis. A simple example is presented to illustrate the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121379460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the orthogonality among subcarriers may not exist and result in inter-carrier interference (ICI) at the receiver. This may cause by residual carrier frequency offset, time variations due to Doppler shift or phase noise. Further developing the parallel cancellation (PC) scheme to mitigate the ICI of OFDM systems, we expand this OFDM symbol-based PC scheme into a space-frequency (SF) coded system. This new simple space- frequency parallel cancellation (SFPC) scheme is a technique that combines the SF and PC schemes together. Computer simulations indicate that OFDM systems using the SFPC scheme outperform the regular PC and SF systems in slow and fast frequency selective fading channels, specifically at a high signal-noise-ratio (SNR). Furthermore, the error floor of the SFPC-OFDM system is significantly lower than that of the PC and SF systems without increasing computational load. Additionally, the SFPC scheme is a simple multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) system.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133349945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These disciplines vary by the type of plant, but do mostly work in a sequential way. Therefore the work of each discipline is based on the results of the previous discipline. As a consequence, an optimization of the engineering is mostly done by a single discipline, not taking the work of the previous or subsequent disciplines into account. When engineering a complex system, like an automated plant, this approach is not sufficient. Within this paper, a methodology for the engineering of automated plants is presented, which is focused on the application of interdisciplinary reusable components. Therefore interdisciplinary and configurable reusable components are developed in a project-independent part and applied within a project-dependent part, where the plant is engineered according to the customer requirements. This methodology is based in common reuse-approaches and includes approaches of different domains, such as the software or process engineering. The presented methodology has been validated by the engineering data of a desalination plant.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114791519","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The project consists of using the natural movements of a human operator to capture commands to move the robot arm. By moving his upper limbs, hands and arms, the human operator generates control signals through an architecture which is based on a Microsoft Kinect for Windows and an electronic system developed with a microcontroller to trigger the proportional control valves of the hydraulic robot arm. From the architecture we show that we control industrial robotics systems using only the visual natural movement of human body without any other sensing device. We implemented a prototype and gathered experimental results that helped us validate our approach and architecture. The system was built to meet industrial accuracy while respecting safety standards.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117134756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our goal-seeking system coordinates the charge and discharge operations of individual batteries in a collection without making any assumptions about the future behavior of the application. Our system allows users to implement different policies for scheduling the charge and discharge operations simply by changing the reward function to achieve different goals. By reusing standard models for batteries, we demonstrate how we superpose a simple damage model that can incorporate well-known operational heuristics. This damage model allows users to design policies that must account for one or more damaged batteries in the collection. In the future, this approach can be realized on a networked embedded platform to address energy storage needs in a variety of applications.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123586912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Nucor Steel Corporation bar mill, located in Marion Ohio, relies heavily on manual work force in its highway products division. A highly manual process introduces many safety hazards as well as inefficiencies and inconsistencies. One hazardous position is the bundling of heavy sign posts, which are manually raked into bundles before being manually banded, and workers are at risk for overuse injuries. Moreover, the sign posts are randomly positioned within a bundle, and hence the disorganized bundle is much larger than an organized stack of the same count. Disorganized bundles also hinder further automation processes downstream the production line, such as banding and powder coating the sign posts. This paper offers a robotic stacker solution utilizing Fanuc robot manipulators, custom-built end-effectors, and programmable logic controller (PLC) integrated with human machine interface (HMI) that will result in smaller and organized stacks as compared with the current disorganized bundles, and the removal of a worker from the hazardous position in the process. Organized stacks will also allow for further downstream automation processes. This research project is to be executed at Michigan Technological University and is sponsored by Nucor Steel Corporation.","PeriodicalId":251318,"journal":{"name":"2015 Annual IEEE Systems Conference (SysCon) Proceedings","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122091460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
