Angular resolution with continuous scanning is dependent mainly on the angle distance between two close targets. Angular resolution with electronic scanning is not dependent only on the distance between two close targets, but also on the step size angle and starting point angle of scanning. It is possible to achieve better angular resolution by methods of direction of arrival (DOA). It is based on a combination of U-shaped slot etched in the HMSIW top wall and two shorts placed in this slot. Thanks to this configuration, a linearly polarized antenna with maximum radiation in the normal direction is obtained. The antenna is designed for the operating frequency band of 10 GHz with help of CST Microwave Studio. Each team member is equipped with a transmitter, generating a unique UWB OFDM signal in periodic pulses. Around the surveyed building several receiver stations are deployed receiving the UWB signals and measuring their time of arrivals. Several TDOA methods are used namely 2D iterative, 3D iterative and the Ralph Bucher method to extract transmitters' positions. Unfortunately each received signal contains not only a direct signal but also its echoes due to reflections at walls. That is why the signals are at first correlated with the known transmitted signal to obtain a rough estimation of the pulses time positions and then a spectral analysis method (SAM) is applied to separate the direct signal from its echoes to get precise time delay of the direct signal (the pseudorange). It is shown that the use of multimode waveguides under certain conditions, allows to expand the angular sector of monostatic diagram of radar cross-section to the maximum possible value of ±450 relative to the normal to the plane of the array. Radiation pattern of the radiating elements in this case is equal to the radiation pattern of the Huygens element. The transition is realized by using a substrate taper inserted into a height-stepped impedance transformer in the RWG region. The transition is designed to cover the 18-26 GHz frequency band, showing a return loss of 20 dB. A back-to-back transition has been fabricated to verify the proposed transition. The measured results show good agreement with the simulation.
