His study of earth and sky occupied his entire life, taking form not only on paper and canvas but also in actual land, the site of Olana, a 250-acre hillside property that became a decades-long creative project. Church’s monumental paintings as well as Olana stand out not merely as an “explorative,” scientific interest but also an artistic practice deeply engaged with the tools of nineteenth-century investigations of the natural world. Church’s efforts underscore the challenges, for artists and cartographers alike, of delineating land in pursuit of meaning.","PeriodicalId":249275,"journal":{"name":"Cartographic Expeditions and Visual Culture in the Nineteenth-Century Americas","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128786465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nineteenth-century images of the Arctic translated the sublime from aesthetic discourse to entertainment while also transforming explorers such as John Franklin, Elijah Kent Kane, or Robert Peary into household names. A self-dubbed “Arctic historical painter,” Operti crafted a visual corpus that presented the Arctic both in museum galleries and in popular media, ranging from magazine illustrations to dioramas to penny tobacco cards. Operti’s project, the chapter argues, bolstered the public imaginary of the Arctic as a sublime landscape even as the region became more mapped and more accessible.","PeriodicalId":249275,"journal":{"name":"Cartographic Expeditions and Visual Culture in the Nineteenth-Century Americas","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132560936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
