But the rising complexity of heterogeneity networks and the need to manage this complexity make the actualization of CWN timely and attractive. Many related projects are built for research teams to do further study. We are undertaking a project called “Basic theory and Key Technologies in Cognitive Wireless Networks” which is one of the major projects in National Basic Research Program (973 Program) approved by the Chinese government. Our research team focuses on issues from network architecture to multi-dimension sensing technologies and radio resource management which are related to each other. In this article, an overview of this project is given by discussing its purpose, research vision, research progress, and testbed.","PeriodicalId":249175,"journal":{"name":"2011 6th International ICST Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (CROWNCOM)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125296249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The platform will enable realistic coexistence studies with current and upcoming wireless standards and services in the television (TV) bands. Further, objectives of C-PMSE are to develop adequate channel and interference models, to study and verify multi-sensor, multi-location concepts in signal detection, signal classification, reactive and proactive radio resource management, and a local spectrum portfolio management. The fundamental concept is based on the ETSI STF 386: Methods, parameters and test procedures for cognitive interference mitigation techniques for use by PMSE devices [1]. The research is conducted in strong interaction with standardization and regulation. Hence, this contribution briefly discusses the PMSE related regulation activities, trends, and strategies in Europe.","PeriodicalId":249175,"journal":{"name":"2011 6th International ICST Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (CROWNCOM)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131450741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose an iterative REM building process based on Kriging interpolation technique that builds the REM using geolocated measurements performed by mobile terminals. As terminal measurements are costly in terms of signalling and battery consumption, we propose an algorithm that chooses the most appropriate measurements to be requested to the mobiles. We compare the performance of this algorithm with a random choice of measurements and show that our algorithm reduces the squared error of the power map by 16%. The proposed algorithm has also the merit of being fast enough to be implemented in an online fashion.","PeriodicalId":249175,"journal":{"name":"2011 6th International ICST Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (CROWNCOM)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127728234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we compare three cooperation schemes for CR ad-hoc systems which are non-cooperation, sensing-cooperation and full-cooperation of sensing and band, in which the spectrum information or the band can be cooperatively shared among cognitive users. Unlike other cooperative sensing schemes which focus on cooperative sensing on single band, our cooperation model focuses on cooperative sensing on multiple bands. We propose the concept of spectrum pool which is the common knowledge on spectrum among cognitive users and this spectrum pool is maintained by sharing sensing results of sensing users on different bands. Given that the cognitive users have more information on the spectrum compared to the case when there is no information sharing, the number of sensing attempts to find vacant band can be reduced and the performance of CR system can be improved. We analyze the performance of three cooperation schemes by using game theory and state transition diagram. Through simulation, we show that our analysis is well matched to simulation results. We also find that the throughput can be improved by utilizing spectrum pool and the throughput can be deteriorated due to the selfish behavior of cognitive users when band can be shared by the cognitive users.","PeriodicalId":249175,"journal":{"name":"2011 6th International ICST Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (CROWNCOM)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128497315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Time-dimension models of spectrum use proposed in the literature so far are able to capture and reproduce essential temporal characteristics such as the mean occupancy level (duty cycle) and the statistical distribution of busy/idle-period lengths. However, more sophisticated aspects of spectrum use, such as time-correlation properties, have not been properly addressed yet. In this context, this paper studies and analyzes, based on field measurements of various radio technologies, the time-correlation properties of spectrum use. Appropriate models and simulation techniques are proposed in order to accurately capture and reproduce such features.","PeriodicalId":249175,"journal":{"name":"2011 6th International ICST Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (CROWNCOM)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128719994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The general methods make great improvement on such problem but influence the performances in other layer. It is because the models they based on, like SINR, barely consider the parameters across the layers. This paper adopts the network scale control to solve those problems. It not only can be developed to improve the interference challenge, such as subnet devision, but also can be combined with other algorithm or make references to engineering. In this paper, we discuss the network scale control according to a new interference model which yield the BER(Bit Error Rate) as result. The model considers the channel and topology of the network, and combine with the traffic and MAC policy across the layers. We take a typical distributed network for example and get the BER performance. We discuss the result of network scale control and compare the result with other methods.","PeriodicalId":249175,"journal":{"name":"2011 6th International ICST Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (CROWNCOM)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125329556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cognitive radio is an emerging technology to utilize frequency spectrum flexibly through dynamic spectrum access. As one of the dynamic spectrum access scheme, here, the transmission of the imaging components of the desired signal over a separated channel is investigated. FS path diversity makes use of the imaging components of the desired signal transmitted on the separate channel. With the assumption of the dynamic spectrum access, this paper evaluates the performance of FS path diversity with the imaging components on a frequency channel apart from the main channel. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme improves bit error rate performance of the OFDM system through path diversity.","PeriodicalId":249175,"journal":{"name":"2011 6th International ICST Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (CROWNCOM)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128122291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The existing results so far primarily focus on single primary user detection. Little is known in the most practical and critical setting when multiple primary users exist. In this paper, we aim to address this problem by studying an optimal detector in the presence of multiple primary users. Specifically, a simple and accurate analytical formula for its test statistics distribution is derived, which yields a useful tool in determining the decision threshold. Simulations are provided to show both the accuracy of the derived result and the superior detection performance in realistic sensing scenarios.","PeriodicalId":249175,"journal":{"name":"2011 6th International ICST Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (CROWNCOM)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124120755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prototype includes the following components: a cognitive management entity (CME), a sensing module, a geolocation device, a TV band database, a transmitter and a receiver. The prototype is developed in compliance with recent Singapore TVWS test trial regulations. The prototype operates within 630 MHz to 742 MHz bands, within Singapore TV channels 41 to 54, except channels 50 and 52. The prototype is able to search for existing TV signals in the aforementioned channels by looking at a TV band database, as well as, a by performing sensing. Once the TV channel(s) is/are found vacant, the prototype can intelligently decide to use a single or 2/4/8 continuous TV channels of 8 MHz each. It has the capability to transmit BPSK and OFDM signals and decode the transmitted signals in the receiver. While in operation, if TV signal appears in a single or multiple channel(s), the prototype can switch to vacant channel(s), if available. Otherwise, it ceases operation. The sensing module has capability to sense analog (PAL) and digital (DVB-T) TV signals. Some sensing performance of analog TV signal detection is also presented.","PeriodicalId":249175,"journal":{"name":"2011 6th International ICST Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications (CROWNCOM)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124281194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
