Omdat veranderingen in thema’s of methodes zich relatief traag voltrekken en voor een belangrijk deel worden gevoed door de belangstelling van de onderzoekers, is het nuttig om zo nu en dan stil te staan bij de ontwikkelingen in het onderzoek en daar een agenda aan vast te knopen. De inzendingen van deze prijsvraag over nieuwe ontwikkelingen in de Economische en Sociale Geschiedenis blijken gefascineerd door Piketty, door maatschappelijke problemen en door de nieuwe methoden die digitalisering mogelijk maakt. Many of the twenty- and thirtysomething researchers are certainly willing to do so, although they currently lack the tools to let their voices be heard in civil society or by policy-makers and businessmen. In this essay, I propose four strategic changes that will strengthen the visibility of Dutch and Flemish social and economic historians as well as their impact on public and private policy-making, namely (1) a diversification of our too narrowly focussed communication strategy, (2) the introduction of ‘duo-jobs’ which allow combining academic work with a career outside academia, (3) an increased cooperation with the business world and (4) the creation of a Centre of Expertise that builds bridges between academic and non-academic partners.","PeriodicalId":248996,"journal":{"name":"Tijdschrift voor Sociale en Economische Geschiedenis/ The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134495310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The cost of delivery in nineteenth-century rural West Flanders: the case of midwife Joanna Mestdagh","authors":"Christa Matthys","doi":"10.18352/TSEG.985","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18352/TSEG.985","url":null,"abstract":"This article focuses on the determinants of the economic cost of at-home childbirth in Flanders in the nineteenth century. Literature on the remuneration of medical professionals in the nineteenth century is sparse. Yet the few existing studies show that fixed rates per delivery did not exist during the nineteenth century. Before that time, pricing was influenced by factors such as the professional experience of the midwife, the distance between the residence of the midwife and the client, the social status of the client and the specific circumstances of the client’s condition. I analyse these factors with regard to home births that were assisted by a certified midwife, using the casebook of a rural Flemish midwife for the period 1831-1892.","PeriodicalId":248996,"journal":{"name":"Tijdschrift voor Sociale en Economische Geschiedenis/ The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128422006","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the turning of the century, a so-called 'societal turn' is imminent. Demands for re-newed interactions with the social sciences are coming back to the surface. In the last decade, social-economic historians have been incorporating ingredients from new political and cultural history, while analysing sociohistorical processes and related practices both as structure, agency and perception. During the next ten years, the challenge for young researchers exists in bringing this societal turn to a decisive phase, making use of our collaborative research en-vironments and our engagement with societal movements both on a local, regional and global scale.","PeriodicalId":248996,"journal":{"name":"Tijdschrift voor Sociale en Economische Geschiedenis/ The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117276475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
