{"title":"Guild brotherhood, guild capital? Social network strategies of master weavers and drapers in fourteenth-century Ghent","authors":"Wouter Saelens","doi":"10.18352/TSEG.1036","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18352/TSEG.1036","url":null,"abstract":"Over the last few decades most guild studies in medieval history have successfully shifted towards a growing attention for the ‘extra-economic’ aspects of guilds, pointing at the social, political and cultural experiences of craft guilds in establishing social networks, defending members’ interests and defining civic culture. Gervase Rosser, in particular, has thoroughly grasped these expressions of the collective consciousness of medieval craft guilds in international literature, identifying them as part of a ‘guild brotherhood’. Discussions on the construction of ‘identity’, ‘solidarity’, ‘trust’ or ‘civil society’ among artisans are, however, hardly ever grounded in the material conditions for industrial production and the concrete power relations of late medieval urban society. In this article I wish to add to this debate a stronger emphasis on the functionality of social ties among craftsmen within the organization of manufacture and the guild’s political economy by investigating the social networks among a population of master weavers in fourteenth-century Ghent. As it appears, the social resources of these weavers – their ‘guild capital’ – were not equally distributed in a brotherhood kind of way. Rather, it was especially in entrepreneurship that ‘guild capital’ could be made, as drapers amplified their actual inclusion within the social fabric of guild and city by establishing intergenerational social mobility, political factions, and class endogamy. This was particularly so within the large-scale and socially polarized textile sector of a European industrial centre like the Flemish city of Ghent.","PeriodicalId":248996,"journal":{"name":"Tijdschrift voor Sociale en Economische Geschiedenis/ The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133803473","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This will be studied comparatively between three distinct regions in Flanders: inner-Flanders, coastal Flanders, and the Waasland. In all three regions it was local relief institutions that increased their financial capacity in order to accommodate rising poverty, despite the long-term advance of nationalized welfare in the background. However, considerable regional differentiation could be detected in the nature and degree by which the funding strategies were adapted. This is explained by three interrelated factors: the direct impact of the food crisis, structural economic developments and the political organization of poor relief.","PeriodicalId":248996,"journal":{"name":"Tijdschrift voor Sociale en Economische Geschiedenis/ The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History","volume":"31 10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116794172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is possible to reconstruct this community on the basis of marriage information and baptismal registers combined with notarial records. From around 1625 until 1665, Africans present in Amsterdam mainly married each other and, in important events such as marriage and baptism, also took African witnesses. The community consisted of black women present in Amsterdam, many of whom had probably entered the city as servants. They often married to black sailors, who were mostly employed by Dutch West-India Company (WIC) and Dutch East-India Company (VOC). In Amsterdam, this heterogeneous community settled in the east of the city, in the area around the Jodenbreestraat.","PeriodicalId":248996,"journal":{"name":"Tijdschrift voor Sociale en Economische Geschiedenis/ The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125859412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Deservingness in almshouse application letters by impoverished Brussels elderly ca. 1750-1800. This article offers a bottom-up perspective to the research on inclusion processes in poor relief in general and elderly care and almshouses in specific at the end of the Ancien Regime. By means of an extensive study of the application letters sent to the Brussels ‘Twaalf Apostelen’ almshouse between 1750 and 1800, the article examines how deservingness is anticipated by the elderly applicants and how it is argued in their discourses. In addition, the article offers insight into the mental framework of these elderly men surrounding coping strategies and channels through which care should or could be obtained. By doing this, the article examines to which extent processes of formalization during previous centuries influenced the mental framework of the elderly during the second half of the eighteenth century.","PeriodicalId":248996,"journal":{"name":"Tijdschrift voor Sociale en Economische Geschiedenis/ The Low Countries Journal of Social and Economic History","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133937394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
