This is a major advantage in many applications where the presence of powering wires and electrical components at the sensing site could be a source of hazards, or the presence of a severe electromagnetic interference environment does not allow the reliable transmission of sensor data over electrical wires. With the use of a part of the optical fiber as the sensing element, coupling losses between the fiber ends and an external sensing element are avoided and an improved sensitivity could be achieved. The possibility of multiplexing sensors in a fiber-connected network using multiplexing techniques is also very interesting for multi-point sensing applications. These factors have motivated a lot of research and development in the optical fiber sensor technology which stands now as a well-established branch of photonics applications. This paper addresses the introduction of optical fiber sensors to undergraduate students in electronics and communications engineering. A senior project in optical fiber sensing is one of the ways to expose students to the field and to apply and expand their background in optical fibers and optoelectronics. The Electronics and Communications Engineering Department at The Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University has offered this project for two years now. The classifications of optical fiber sensors with respect to the nature of the sensing element and the optical signal modulation and detection techniques employed are reviewed in this paper and two senior level projects are described: a liquid level sensor and a fiber gyroscope.","PeriodicalId":248604,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Teaching Photonics at Egyptian Engineering Faculties & Institutes","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117318339","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These trends aim at better, faster and cheaper communication via realizing low-cost optoelectronic functions. The idea is to combine the processing capabilities of electronics data transfer and the speed of light. This can be achieved by integration of photonic materials, where light can be generated, guided, modulated, amplified and detected, with standard electronic circuits. At the same time miniturization of such materials to perform the above functions is also thought of which the photonic crystals seems to offer a step on the way. To achieve the above goals; several strategies are thought through. Integration of photonic functions on one substrate is one, while hybrid integration of compound-semiconductor optical functions with Si electronic functions is another. A more ambitious strategy is to realize fully Si-based, or at least Si-compatible, optoelectronics. The main derive behind these goals are the developments of new materials and technologies. Erbium doped Si and SiGe, porous Si, and nanocrystals seems to enjoy the interest for such applications. In this article we address very briefly the main characteristics, advantages and shortcomings of these trends together with some of their successful applications.","PeriodicalId":248604,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Teaching Photonics at Egyptian Engineering Faculties & Institutes","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114601452","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technique is based on the combination between the effective index and the variational methods. An algorithm is implemented to study the effect of the structure parameters and dimensions on the dispersion curves for quasi-TE and TM-modes of a rib optical waveguide. The field distribution of the fundamental and higher order modes for the two cases are also computed. The obtained results are compared with other published data and show good agreement between them.","PeriodicalId":248604,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Teaching Photonics at Egyptian Engineering Faculties & Institutes","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128244775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main reasons are the advantages of the optical techniques in general over the other measuring methods. They are non-invasive, quick to observe highly transient phenomena and have a high spatial and transient resolution. Therefore it is expected, taking into account the further development of components for optical probes, that optical techniques will continue to gain in importance in many fields of application. The purposes of this review are to discuss the principles of some laser measurement techniques and to provide an account of their recent developments. Translation and rotation can be measured in a variety of ways and they are valuable in the control of machine tool movements and calibration. A laser measuring system for resolving displacements consists of a laser, an interferometer, a reflector and a receiver. The laser, interferometer and receiver remain stationary while the retroreflector senses the variables to be measured, e.g. the straightness of a machine slideway. Also laser transducers can measure up to six independent axes of displacement using one transducer head. The transducer produces signals in the form of interference fringes and the system is able to resolve motion of the order of one quarter of a wavelength. Light scattered from a rough surface can be characterized by many different parameters, such as angular distribution, state of polarization, speckle contrast.","PeriodicalId":248604,"journal":{"name":"Workshop on Teaching Photonics at Egyptian Engineering Faculties & Institutes","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127727878","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
