For children from disadvantaged communities in India—such as the urban poor—financial and cultural constraints severely limit their ability to complete their schooling, forcing them to enter the job market as unskilled workers. This chapter presents an educational intervention called Project Disha in an urban slum by Kriti Social Initiatives, a non-profit organization in India. Project Disha is a scholarship and mentoring program that aims to teach life skills and fill the social capital gap for these disadvantaged students. Due to the pandemic, the program switched to an online mode, an already challenging situation made more so due to the extremely limited technology available to the children. With limited internet connectivity, frequent power cuts, and access only to inexpensive smartphones, Project Disha now relies on a team of volunteer mentors and creative pedagogical strategies to keep students connected, engaged, and learning.","PeriodicalId":248247,"journal":{"name":"Creativity as Progressive Pedagogy","volume":"350 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123329543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mental health has become more fragile due to social distancing, stress and fears, and the consequences of the disease. This chapter points out how the context of COVID-19 affects people's lives and the significance of doing creative tasks during these uncertain times. Research has shown that creativity can enhance the ability to cope and heal, as it heightens resilience and abilities of problem-solving. Moreover, everyone can learn techniques to become more creative and develop this skill through time and experience. For example, creativity increases through communication and collaboration with others. Therefore, this chapter demonstrates the relevance of practicing creativity during a worldwide pandemic, providing examples of applications and solutions for everyone to improve mental health and well-being.","PeriodicalId":248247,"journal":{"name":"Creativity as Progressive Pedagogy","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122053995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter provides an insight into the theoretical basis of gamification and its usefulness in explicating the meaning that others ascribe to their individual experiences of the world and how they interpret them. Higher education remains a central forum and situationally responsive focus to highlight those issues which remain topical, yet often unaddressed. This affords a lens of intellectual, rationale articulation of what matters – lives lived in a world still tainted with injustice and the lack of society's impetus and appetite for progressive change. Gamification is posited as a means of facilitating freedom of expression for individuals and collective communities, for whom voicing personal beliefs and standpoints has been a barrier for rationale debate on issues of oppression and the advocacy of agency in practice.","PeriodicalId":248247,"journal":{"name":"Creativity as Progressive Pedagogy","volume":"233 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133749340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By focusing on this duality through a series of interviews with practitioners, the researchers explore how the learner/educators do or do not adapt one set of skills into the other area of work and the lessons learned from this reflective practice. The results are analyzed and broken down into five sections: glitches of the practice, reflective practice, active learning, engagement, and reframing communication. Through further analysis, the researchers explore possibilities for shifting the mindset around digital education methods. The researchers then offer suggestions for further development in the field and where further research can expand on the subject area.","PeriodicalId":248247,"journal":{"name":"Creativity as Progressive Pedagogy","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116786579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More than ever before, innovative e-teaching modalities are needed to navigate the intricate socially-networked abyss where students and teachers alike have chosen to function in this pandemic period. That is why frameworks, however nascent they might be, are required to steer the learning ship, on more than one social media platform, to meet specific educational ends. In this light, this chapter presents a descriptive unobtrusive study which was conducted to map out an innovative e-mode of grammar instruction of a secondary e-tutor who was able to tutor a massive number of e-tutees simultaneously on Instagram and YouTube in the first phase, adding on, subsequently, Facebook to the e-instructional process. The findings unveil a framework of how to leverage or educationalize certain features of these cloud-based outlets concurrently and reach a more optimized e-method of multi-platform tutoring.","PeriodicalId":248247,"journal":{"name":"Creativity as Progressive Pedagogy","volume":"168 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125980214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Designed to make the connections between physical making and coding, learning to program becomes the bridge between a crafted “Critter” and its digital version starring in a student-created video game. This chapter offers a rich analysis of the impact of Critter Code on participants, families, and instructors through the framework of the self-determination theory of motivation. The chapter then describes Critter Code's application of collaborative problem-solving and student agency to create personal connections to the content to positively affect students' computer science self-identity and interest.
