The series of acoustic surveys carried out in this work are the first systematic attempts to estimate Pacific sardine biomass in the Gulf of California. Due to similar acoustic reflectivity of other pelagic species, we need to refine the allocation of acoustic energy to species. From 2012, besides the 38 kHz transducer another frequency has been incorporated (120 kHz) in the surveys. With both frequencies we will apply acoustic signal filtering procedures in order to (1). Discriminate zooplankton echoes from fish echoes and (2). Investigate the possibility to better discriminate the Pacific sardine from other species.","PeriodicalId":245877,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE/OES Acoustics in Underwater Geosciences Symposium","volume":"156 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123097263","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

M. de Mahiques","doi":"10.1109/RIOACOUSTICS.2013.6684003","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/RIOACOUSTICS.2013.6684003","url":null,"abstract":"Shallow gas occurrences and the effects of these components in seismic waves are studied by several researchers in different parts of the world; these features can also provide important information regarding the origin and evolution of coastal and inner environments, once the gas signatures on seismic waves are mainly a function of density of gas and sediment properties. The Bertioga channel is located on the southern coast of Sao Paulo - Brazil, with estuarine characteristics that connects the city of Santos to the ocean by a 25 km channel. This is a low hydrodynamic system with maximum depths of 18 m, and is influenced by its tributaries from the Serra do Mar mountains. The present study was conducted with the seismic sources Pinger (24 kHz), Chirp (2 - 8 kHz) and Boomer (0.5 - 2 kHz), operating simultaneously. Surficial sediment sampling was carried with a Van Veen grab. Five cores were also acquired, of which the sedimentation rate was obtained. The seismic survey allowed the identification of several retaining gas facies and seepages. Between the identified gas facies, the most important, regarding the evolutionary context were: Acoustic Turbidity, acoustic blankets and black shadows as gas retaining facies; the highlighted gas seeps were acoustic plumes, intra-sedimentary Plumes and turbidity pinnacles. Once the patterns were seen, the Bertioga Channel could be split into three sectors: The Strait Sector, Candinho and Eastern Sector. In the Strait, the acoustic blankets were predominant with less variation in elevation (8.6 - 2.6), seepages occurred less compared to other areas and were mostly consisting of turbidity pinnacles, this was also the portion where the highest sedimentation rates were observed. In the Candinho sector, the shallowest facies occurred, black shadows and acoustic blankets about 1 to 2m of the bottom prevailed, with a high occurrence of seepages in the form of acoustic plumes. Finally, the Eastern Sector had the highest changes in the levels of acoustic blankets, with the deepest occurrences (14.0 - 4.3) and seepages in the form of intra-sedimentary plumes. Stratigraphic units were defined, which were different between each sector and contributed to the previous division based on gas occurrences. Four stratigraphic units were identified in the Eastern sector, two in the Candinho sector and only one stratigraphic unit in the Strait sector, once the seismic signal was totally limited by gas blankets in this area. Given these evidences, it was concluded that the Bertioga channel evolved as two distinct systems, which were separated during the marine regressions and reconnected during marine transgressions. The sudden change in the depths of occurrence in acoustic blankets between the Eastern sector and Candinho, and evidence of neotectonic faulting in the Late Pleistocene suggest that the connection of these environments (Strait sector + Candinho and Eastern sector) may have been abrupt.","PeriodicalId":245877,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE/OES Acoustics in Underwater Geosciences Symposium","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122252976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are still a few gaps in relation to the application of procedures that are common in data processing of conventional seismic reflection like deconvolution and migration. One can assign these gaps to the unavailability of these procedures in processing packages dedicated to the data of CSP. This gives rise to a debate in academic and technical environment with respect to the need and possibility of improvement in the interpretation and presentation of data from CSP by incorporating more sophisticated tools in processing flowchart. Thus, this paper aims to the potential of using migration and deconvolution in CSP, presenting data acquired in the harbor of Santos with the use of a boomer and processed by using the package SEISMIC UNIX - SU. The processing showed that it is possible to improve the definition of the reflectors via spiking deconvolution, while with predictive deconvolution multiple reflections were attenuated, preserving the primary events. Furthermore, the implementation of migration algorithms was effective in repositioning the reflectors, and therefore producing seismic sections that represent more closely the geological characteristics of the site.","PeriodicalId":245877,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE/OES Acoustics in Underwater Geosciences Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130742326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using acoustic frequencies, usually from 100 to 2000 kHz, this tool can generate a very detailed bottom surface image from rivers, reservoirs, and from the sea. Very portable systems nowadays can also allow getting images from areas as shallow as 1 m depth, such as urban lakes, small rivers, and near-shore areas. This article discusses the SSS applicability for reservoir studies related to margins stability. The focus here is on the Porto Primavera Reservoir, located at the most western part of São Paulo state, 800 km from São Paulo city. With a water surface area greater than 200 km long × 11 km wide, the margins of the reservoir have been severely affected by an erosion process which started from waves created due to the large wind patches. Since a few years ago in some parts of the reservoir the margin receded 40 to 60 meters from the original border, causing some problems for the local population, to the company which manage the reservoir, and also created some environmental issues. A study based on side scan images was conducted by IPT to try to protect these margins from wave actions. Some special underwater structures were created and implemented at strategic positions on the bottom surface and also at the margin, in order to minimize the wave energy before it hits the border. During the first part of the project the SSS survey was conducted in order to find the appropriate place to set these underwater structures. On the second part of the project the SSS survey was conducted in order to monitor these underwater structures. Successful field operations and detailed images obtained from more than 300 km of SSS survey lines showed how important this geophysical tool is for reservoir investigation.","PeriodicalId":245877,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE/OES Acoustics in Underwater Geosciences Symposium","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127017942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concerns over noise produced by human operations at sea have restricted marine operations in environmentally sensitive areas such as the Beaufort Sea (North of Alaska), the Caspian Sea, and elsewhere around the world. The International Maritime Organization is now considering regulations on underwater noise for shipping, at a minimum, to combat the rise in noise levels in the world's oceans. Such concerns and regulations point to the need for a measurement system that can evaluate underwater noise generation from marine activities. To assist in evaluating the underwater noise from vessels, the authors have recently developed such a measurement system that is also highly portable and easily deployed. The system was originally developed to perform testing that complies with new underwater noise measurement standards such as ANSI/ASA S12.64 and DNV SILENT Class. However, its capabilities can be extended to assess noise from a variety of marine sources including seismic exploration, explosives, construction, offshore platforms, and more. This paper presents an overview of the system design, its capabilities, as well as case studies where the system was deployed in the field to perform underwater noise measurements.","PeriodicalId":245877,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE/OES Acoustics in Underwater Geosciences Symposium","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127507872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many authors already use this integrated method to investigate interest areas in, both, commercial and scientific aspect. In this direction the current study initiated in 2009 in the frame of the Geochemistry Network PETROBRAS/CENPES, aims to track the quaternary evolution of a muddy bank situated at the coastal western boundary upwelling system (WBUS) off Cabo Frio (23°S) in the Atlantic Ocean. The WBUS is located at the north coast of the Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Here the coastline orientation differs from the default East-West direction of the Brazilian coast, concomitant with the boundary of the Campos and Santos Basins, the most important oil and gas basins of the country. The upwelling phenomenon occurs due to constant northeast winds. The same winds combined with the Northeast-Southwest coastline orientation also promote a curl confluence making the environment even more complex. Seismic data was acquired in cruises on board the RV Ocean Survey. Altogether 680 km was covered by a 3.5 KHz sub-bottom using the Geopulse Geoacustic System. Further, four piston cores were collected to be scan and described in physic parameters and sedimentological content, respectively. The scan was performed using a Geotek Multi Sensor Core Logger (MSCL), which measure and register the Vp, gamma density and porosity of the core. After the scan, the cores were sample and analyzed on sedimentological grain size distribution determined by a Cilas 1064 laser analyzer. The results were integrated in order to identify common trends. Three major echo-characters were described in seismic records. Grain size analysis presented a good relationship with these echos. Echo A) Transparent, represented by a sharp bottom reflector with no sub-bottom reflectors scatter of a transparent layer mapped in seismic records. The grain size distribution is more balanced with a slight higher content of sands (55 %) in the correspondent core. Echo B) Stratified described as a series of parallel sub-bottom horizons, its percentage of clays is the highest of the three cores (77 %). The last echo, C) Reflexive, is a prolonged echo with one or none sub-bottom reflector. This echo is related to the highest percentage of sands of the three cores (61%). The sediment analysis was extrapolated all over the echo-characters extension to understand the transport regime over the area. This criteria, allied to isopach map, made possible to recognize three distinct zones inside the muddy accumulation.","PeriodicalId":245877,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE/OES Acoustics in Underwater Geosciences Symposium","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133386124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
