Traditional recommender systems are built based on a general consensus that users’ preferences reflect their underlying interests. Therefore, various collaborative filtering techniques have been proposed to discover items that best match users’ preferences through estimating ratings for items accurately. However, determining the interestingness of items based on user preferences alone is not sufficient. In human psychology, researchers have found an important intrinsic motivation, i.e., curiosity, for seeking interestingness in social context. Instead of focusing on users’ preferences, curiosity highlights the impact of the unknown and unexpectedness on a person’s feeling of interestingness. In light of this, we propose a novel recommendation model which recommends items by taking consideration of the target users’ curiosity in addition to their personal preferences. To model user curiosity, we adopt a psychologically inspired approach and transpose Berlyne’s theory of curiosity into a computational process. Three key curiosity-stimulating factors, including surprise, uncertainty and conflict, are modelled to estimate user’s curiosity for each item. The proposed recommendation model is evaluated with two large-scale real world datasets and the experimental results highlight that the consideration of social curiosity significantly improves recommendation precision, coverage and diversity.","PeriodicalId":245783,"journal":{"name":"Web Intell.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128570475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Edge computing in Internet of Things enhances application execution by retrieving cloud resources to the close proximity of resource-constrained end devices at the edge and by enabling task offloading from end devices to the edge. In this paper, edge computing platforms are extended into the data producing end devices, including wireless sensor network nodes and smart-phones, with mobile agents. Mobile agents operate as a multi-agent system on the opportunistic network of heterogeneous end devices, where the benefits include autonomous, asynchronous and the adaptive execution and relocation of application-specific tasks, while taking into account local resource availability. In addition to the vertical edge connectivity, mobile agents enable horizontal sharing of the information between end devices. Use cases are presented, where mobile agents address challenges in current edge computing platforms. An edge application is evaluated, where mobile agents as a multi-agent system process sensor data in a heterogeneous set of end devices, control the operation of the devices and share their results with system components. Mobile agents operate atop a REST-based mobile agent software framework that relies on embedded Web services for interoperability. A real-world evaluation and large-scale simulations show that energy consumption is reduced significantly in the edge application execution.","PeriodicalId":245783,"journal":{"name":"Web Intell.","volume":"06 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128763800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a massive, high growth rate and diversified information asset that requires new processing patterns to have stronger decision-making power, insight and process optimization capabilities The last decade has seen huge advances in the scale of data we routinely generate and collect in pretty much everything we do, as well as our ability to use technology to analyze and understand it. We have been witnessing a digital revolution associated with developments of various emerging technologies including ubiquitous computing devices, sensors and sensing devices, smart devices, cloud computing and big data analytics tools are dramatically changing the mode and accessibility of science, research and practice in all domains [1,4,8]. The Internet of Things is an important part of the new generation of information technology, and also an important stage of development in the “information” era. Internet of Things (IoT) applications are considered to be a major source of big data obtained from a more connected dynamic and real life world and is evolving at a rapid pace. The realization of the IoT vision brings Information and Communication Technology (ICT) closer to many aspects of the real-world life instead of the virtual life through advanced theories, algorithms and applications. Technology of real-world IoT based on cloud computing has rapidly emerged as a novel industry and life paradigm. These topics will be the most comprehensive field focused on the various aspects of advances in computer engineering technologies, applications, and services. In cloud computing environments that include mobile infrastructures, the most important and final goal is to provide users more secure and richer Internet of Things services. Tremendous advances in algorithms of sensing, processing, communication and actuating core technologies are leading to new intelligent IoT services in our life such as smart cities, smart healthcare, smart grids, and others to improve all aspects of life. There might be many issues to realize it and provide intelligence IoT services based on the advanced applied algorithms and application technologies with much effort and enormous attention. The advanced applied algorithms and application technologies of this research area poses challenges such as context information fusion, security, reliability, autonomous and intelligent connecting, trust application and framework for realworld life. Advanced algorithms and applications for IoT based on the cloud computing research contributions that present new technologies, concepts, or analysis, reports on experiences and experiments of implementation and application of theories, and tutorials on new trends, are required in this research fields [9]. However, due to the internal nature of emotions, labelling/annotation of emotional experience is done manually by humans using specially developed annotation tools. To effectively exploit the resulting subjective annotations for developing affective systems, their quality needs to be assessed. This entails, (i) evaluating the variations in annotations, across different subjects and emotional stimuli, to detect spurious/unexpected patterns; and (ii) developing strategies to effectively combine these subjective annotations into a ground truth annotation. This article builds on our previous work by presenting a novel Functional Data Analysis based approach to assess the quality of annotations. Specifically, the bivariate annotation time-series are transformed into functions, such that each resulting functional annotation then becomes a sample element for analysis like Multivariate Functional Principal Component Analysis (MFPCA) that evaluate variation across all annotations. The resulting scores from MFPCA provide interesting insights into annotation patterns and facilitate the use of multivariate statistical techniques to address both (i) and (ii). Given the presented efficacy of these methods, we believe they offer an exciting new approach to assessing the quality of annotations.","PeriodicalId":245783,"journal":{"name":"Web Intell.","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126417431","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a problematic task, which needs to be accounted for both in terms of installation of new packages and removal of conflicting ones. While existing approaches are able to identify dependency satisfaction and conflicts, a broader and efficient approach can be formalised in terms of trust. Positive instances of trust are required by the identification of safely installable packages. Negative trust, a much less explored concept, can be useful to analyse the complementary issue of packages’ removal both in case of conflicts and of security issues. In this paper we develop a logic of negative trust with two aims: identifying packages that are undesirable in view of the current installation profile; and currently installed packages that become inconsistent with a new intended installation. The logic provides distinct procedures for the identification of either case. We illustrate properties of the calculus, provide a simple working example and offer a translation of the protocol to the Coq proof assistant for verification of its formal correctness.","PeriodicalId":245783,"journal":{"name":"Web Intell.","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117257745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These papers are extended versions of selected papers accepted at the 11th IFIP WG 11.11 International Conference on Trust Management, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, on June 12–16, 2017. Trust management has found increasing relevance given the current context of uncertainty in the quality of software downloads, the unreliability of online product recommendations, and biased reporting. Trust and reputation, based on past transactions and behavior, can provide very significant insight and help addressing these challenges. The papers included in this volume further illustrate the relevance and usefulness of the notion of trust in a wide variety of application domains, namely software management and recommender systems. Primeiro and Bender present an original application of trust in the context of software management. More specifically, they focus on the use of negative trust (as a signifier of incompatibility) to handle the removal of software packages, which is a challenging task as it can lead to broken installations. To achieve their goal, they provide an extensive formal model, illustrated with a running example, and which they further support using the Coq theorem prover. Richthammer et al. provide an extensive and systematic survey of reputation-enhanced recommender systems. They show in particular that there are many different ways in which reputation and recommendation scores can be combined, and they highlight the fact that there is much left to be done, especially in terms of comparing the various existing approaches to one another. The guest editors wish to thank all reviewers for their effort in helping improve the manuscripts.","PeriodicalId":245783,"journal":{"name":"Web Intell.","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128082245","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
