With the increasing demand of information, the high energy costs has raised the issue of power consumption. The main goal in achieving data center energy efficiency can be translated into the ensuring that IT equipment uses, as maximum power as possible from the power entering the data center to compute useful work but at the same time the service level agreement between costumers and managers has to be satisfied. In this paper, different concepts of efficiency that are linked with multiple methods of increasing energy efficiency into a data center, will be presented, as well as different principles of energy management. A comprehensive overview of the currently available energy metrics will be provided, followed by an in-depth analysis of their commonalities and differences. An analyze about the degree of freedom encountered into the process of energy management, will be afforded. This paper presents a global overview of the energy efficiency management process into a data center.","PeriodicalId":245591,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Green Computing and Communications","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121365683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, different CO2 equivalent models for fuel generated thermal units are derived. Secondly, the Cost-CO2 emission Tradeoff Curve (CCTC) and Incremental Cost for CO2 Reduction (ICCR) curve, are introduced to assess the impact of CO2 emissions on power generation costs. Incorporating these two indexes, the single-objective and bi-objective programming methods are employed to establish a generation dispatch strategy. The salient feature of the strategy allows the decision-maker to consider both environmental and economic factors at the same time. Since generation dispatch belongs to large-scale non-linear planning problems, this study employs a particle swarm approach with novel coding scheme for generation dispatch solution, which can quickly find an optimal solution with higher probability. Finally, taking the 27-unit system from Taiwan power company as an example, simulation result of the study reveals that the proposed dispatch strategy can effectively take into consideration CO2 reduction impact on cost during off-peak, half-peak and peak load conditions to achieve environmental protection and economic purpose.","PeriodicalId":245591,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Green Computing and Communications","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116017429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides the widespread sensitivity to ecological issues, such interest also stems from economic needs, since both energy costs and electrical requirements of IT industry around the world show a continuously growing trend. In this paper, we first discuss the connotation of green computing and sketch our view on the next generation of IT systems for green computing. Subsequently, we identify key issues relevant to green computing and evaluate different approaches to these problems. Finally, we point out future directions of research and conclude the paper.","PeriodicalId":245591,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Green Computing and Communications","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114587029","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have taken an application-level approach, by varying the packet size and transmission rate at the protocol level and evaluating energy usage across a range of application transmission rates using both large and small packet sizes. We have observed that both the application's transmission rate and the packet size have an impact on energy efficiency for transmission in our test bed. We also included in our experiments evaluation of the energy efficiency of emulations of YouTube and Skype flows, and a comparison with Ethernet transmissions.","PeriodicalId":245591,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Green Computing and Communications","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120952896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The existing fault tolerant mechanisms either consume significant extra energy to detect and recover from the failures or need to use additional hardware and software resource. In this paper, we propose a novel energy-aware fault tolerance mechanism for WSN, called Informer Homed Routing (IHR). In our IHR, the non cluster head nodes limit and select the target of their data transmission. Therefore, it consumes less energy. Our experiments show that our proposed protocol can dramatically reduce energy consumption, compared to two existing protocols, LEACH and DHR.","PeriodicalId":245591,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Green Computing and Communications","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114070469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such directly discarded mode may result in huge waste. The major challenge in green computing is the recyclability of the computing system. In order to address this challenge in the software field, this paper proposes a design idea of green software embodying the adaptability and recyclability. The adaptable and recyclable strategy may consist of two phases. The first one is compressing the increasingly deeper software stack, another one is keeping the functionality recycling and code reuse. The adaptability and recyclability mean automatically decomposing the complex software into several parts which are ease to be reused and automatically selecting the feasible parts for the on-writing software. And we also explore the system software design path to adaptability and recyclability in our previous work as well as in the future.","PeriodicalId":245591,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Green Computing and Communications","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126444454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The UK is one of the first countries to focus on Green ICT inform of governmental strategies and policies. The UK public sector, including UK HEIs, is under pressure to implement Green ICT. Although the UK government encourages HEIs to work on Green ICT, there has not been a comprehensive review of existing Green ICT policies and strategies devised by UKHEIs. This paper first reviews the concepts of Green ICT, and presents a framework to analyse Green ICT strategy, practice, and measurement in UK HEIs. This is followed by the analysis of evolution of Green ICT practices in UK HEIs based on web-based data collection in 2009 and 2011.","PeriodicalId":245591,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Green Computing and Communications","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134335478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

System dynamics make it difficult to implement optimization in both aspects on shared infrastructures. A majority of existing works either focused on one aspect or applied models that are trained offline for application-specific workload. In addition, virtualization is being widely used in large-scale data centers to attain basic benefits like fault and performance isolation, and to improve system manageability. A key challenge that comes with virtualization is to dynamically provisioning resources for virtual machines and optimize their capacity for meeting service level objectives at the lowest possible cost. In this paper, we present a hierarchical management framework to assure application-level performance while minimizing power consumption for virtualized data centers. A novelty of the management framework is to combine control theory with linear programming technique. Empirical results show that the proposed framework brings substantial energy saving, while ensuring application performance. Especially, the integration of the performance controller and the energy optimizer results in an energy saving of 43% on our hardware testbed.","PeriodicalId":245591,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Green Computing and Communications","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127065045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Computing contributes a large portion of energy consumption. The concept of green computing has been popularized. Along with the rapid development of China, energy issue becomes more and more important. We believe that green computing would play a very important role in China. However, past publications mainly focused on electricity consumption in data centers, while there are other important sources of electricity consumption in computing. The concept of green computing should be also applied to these sources. In this paper, we present and analyze the data on the electricity consumptions in the IT industry (including the telecommunication and computer industries) and by household computers in five major Chinese cities during 2005-2009. The analysis will demonstrate the necessity of green computing in the IT industry and in household computers in China.","PeriodicalId":245591,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE/ACM International Conference on Green Computing and Communications","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122175074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
