It examines the origins and usage of the phrases 'cultural and spiritual values' and 'cultural and spiritual significance of nature'. These phrases are a central part of the work of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in recognising the role of, and engaging with, people in the governance and management of protected and conserved areas. From cultural heritage management and heritage studies perspectives, cultural value is typically used as an overarching expression for a range of different values—aesthetic, historic, scientific, social, or spiritual value as applied in the Australia International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Burra Charter.","PeriodicalId":244821,"journal":{"name":"Cultural and Spiritual Significance of Nature in Protected Areas","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125549538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It provides a background to the Western Enlightenment construct of ‘nature’ and examines the ways in which this worldview has historically shaped the designation, management, and governance of protected areas—with particular reference to the perspectives and work of the IUCN. We also consider why a Western concept of nature as separate or contrary continues to be applied, but equally the ways in which diverse worldviews—expressed in language and religion, for example—are re-shaping conservation practice. We conclude by discussing the opportunities and challenges that recognising and integrating diverse concepts and values of nature has for the conservation community.","PeriodicalId":244821,"journal":{"name":"Cultural and Spiritual Significance of Nature in Protected Areas","volume":"207 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132305741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The book argues that the 'cultural and spiritual significance of nature' is among the most compelling drivers of people's motivations to engage with, protect, and conserve the natural environment. It presents a legal framework for 'spiritual governance' and examines its implications for the management and governance of protected and conserved areas. The book also argues that the 'cultural and spiritual significance of nature' is part of a deeply seated bond that can exist between individuals, groups, and communities and their special places. It examines the concept of 'authenticity' as a device through which to explore the challenges of working within systems typically segregated between nature and culture and between natural and cultural heritage management. The book provides much optimism for the future of cross-cultural and cross-collaborative work.","PeriodicalId":244821,"journal":{"name":"Cultural and Spiritual Significance of Nature in Protected Areas","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126754789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In recent years, visitor numbers to these sites—and consequently their impacts on biodiversity—have escalated, particularly during religious festivals. India’s National Tiger Conservation Authority has mandated every reserve develop plans to manage religious tourism, but the challenges of balancing conservation with community visitation rights have hindered implementation. Here we discuss the first management model to assist park authorities in meeting these challenges—developed in the Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. In this ‘Green Pilgrimage Model’, government, civil society, and religious stakeholders co-manage activities ranging from waste disposal to awareness-raising campaigns linking conservation and religion. Although challenges remain, this project has led to observed shifts in visitor attitudes and behaviours, underscoring the potential of faith-based approaches and partnerships for nature conservation in Indian protected areas. Personal Statement: Chantal Elkin In 2012, my work with the global organisation Alliance on Religions and Conservation (ARC) found me living in an ashram in the foothills of the Himalayas in Rishikesh, India. Based in this holy town on the Ganges River, I spent months meeting with respected religious leaders and contacting conservationists from across India in order to understand the nexus of conservation and religion. I made a surprising discovery: conservation and religion met, and often clashed, in India’s tiger reserves. These reserves are home to some of the world’s last tigers; as well as other globally threatened species. They also harbour some of India’s holiest","PeriodicalId":244821,"journal":{"name":"Cultural and Spiritual Significance of Nature in Protected Areas","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116973464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
