This article focuses on the work of Catholic trade unionism that targeted Spanish immigration in France between 1961 and 1968. Based on how CFTC-CFDT trade unions interacted with Spanish immigrants, compared to Catholic workers movements such as the Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne (Young Christian Workers, JOC/JOC-F), this article shall elucidate how French Catholic trade unionism allowed for a critique of Francoism to emerge. In other words, this article tries to rethink the “Catholic specificity” of these immigrant groups, and to understand how immigrants were able to acquire a strategy of union autonomy that conveyed Catholic values that were democratic alternatives to those embodied by Spanish National Catholicism.","PeriodicalId":244540,"journal":{"name":"Histoire Politique","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133804149","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines the shifting power relations between these two partners after the fall of the Berlin Wall. As the East German party became more established and influential in its own country, it developed links with it West German counterpart that resulted in a complex interplay of organizational, ideological, and programmatic influences. This article studies the evolution of the social democratic positioning and functioning of the two German parties over the course of the events leading up to their ultimate fusion in September 1990. The analysis of the modalities of this merger has many lessons to offer regarding the social democratic balance of power within the unified country. It shows that the West German social democratic model was largely imposed by force in East Germany, rather than accepted consensually. Conversely, the legacy of the East German party was not entirely absent from the unified SPD.","PeriodicalId":244540,"journal":{"name":"Histoire Politique","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134251220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the last few decades, the Socialist voter base has become a bugaboo in public discourse and in European social democracies more specifically. The idea that political parties have “abandoned” their working-class voters to the extreme right-wing of the political spectrum is frequently evoked. The question of the representativeness of social democratic parties is not a new one, however, and has long been discussed within a transnational framework, with partisan actors comparing national situations to each other and/or drawing inspiration from their “sister parties”. In reality, the very image of the homogeneity of historic social democratic electorates should be challenged, given the often trans-class movements of these parties, the nuanced transformations of working-class and popular environments since the 19 th century, and the influence of immigration, which has constantly questionned the national framework of action for social democratic parties. This article will look at the Swiss Socialist Party to analyze how partisan cadres and activists think of and address voters. Although the postwar period saw the Party’s integration into power-sharing agreements on the basis of allegedly stable electoral quotas, behind the curtain the Party was constantly rethinking its voter base and its relationship to the working class. During the Cold War, the Party first sought to shake off the “red” label and to reach the “middle class.” The arrival of women as voters in 1971, parallel to a wave of labor migration in the 1960s and 1970s, led social democrats to move past their focus on a male, Swiss, and working-class voter.","PeriodicalId":244540,"journal":{"name":"Histoire Politique","volume":"244 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122477464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cela permet notamment d’identifier des pôles concurrents dans la production d’idées. D’autre part, l’article étudie la promotion de nouvelles formes d’action collective, comme le « lobbying ». Tenues ensemble, ces deux lignes d’analyse permettent de mieux comprendre ce que la libéralisation de l’économie fait aux organisations patronales. The article analyzes the ideological debates and evolving practices within the French National Employers’ Organization, or CNPF, in connection with the liberalization of the French economy during the early 1980s. By modifying several of the CNPF’s missions, economic liberalization gave rise to internal debate within the employers’ organization regarding its new role and function. These discussions were at the heart of the election for the CNPF’s presidency in 1986, when two candidates were campaigning to “adapt the CNPF to the liberal context.” The article combines two objectives. On the one hand, it analyzes the place of ideological debate in a campaign for the CNPF presidency in the early 1980s. This makes it possible to identify how competing ideas were produced. On the other hand, this article also examines how new forms of collective action, such as lobbying, were promoted. Taken together, these two lines of analysis allow us to better understand what the liberalization of the economy has done to employers’ organizations.","PeriodicalId":244540,"journal":{"name":"Histoire Politique","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124323664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We shall seek to understand why the German feminist and women’s labor movements never cooperated on more than an ad hoc basis. The first part of this article describes how the leaders of the German women’s movements placed themselves, from the very beginning, in an international but not a trans-class perspective. The second part analyzes the ideological, strategic, and symbolic factors that prevented anything more than episodic cooperation between these two movements in Germany. The third part looks at the uses of an international sectoral public space, in which national borders were crossed with ease, while social barriers remained quite impermeable. In the fourth and final part, we shall show that the war certainly pushed aside the internationalism of the feminist networks, but nonetheless allowed the German bourgeois and working-class women’s movements to communicate and even to fight together to obtain the right to vote for women.","PeriodicalId":244540,"journal":{"name":"Histoire Politique","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134455599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
