The present article presents a regional analysis of the varieties of the game played in north-eastern Africa. Dr. Pankhurst was recently a Senior Research Fellow of the British Institute; previously he was Director of the Institute of Ethiopian Studies in Addis Ababa. The board-games of Ethiopia, Somalia and the Sudanese borderlands display elements of both similarity and diversity. These may be analysed in terms of the number of rows, holes and balls used, as well as on the basis of various opening gambits, and, above all, the objective of the game. The latter may be directed primarily towards the capture of holes, the acquisition of balls irrespective of ‘territory’, or in some rare cases a combination of both, or else towards a player's survival on the board after his opponent's supply of counters is exhausted. Some games take the form of a series of rounds i...","PeriodicalId":243659,"journal":{"name":"Azania:archaeological Research in Africa","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126581947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two of these are on the Hafun peninsula, of which one appears to be of Graeco-Roman date and one may possibly be earlier; the third is on the northern coast just west of Cape Guardafui. Early Iron Age Kwale pottery is present on both sides of the mountain and on the southern side appears to be associated with Maore ware as in the North Pare Hills. Other pottery-types testify to later occupation of the southern area prior to the emergence of the Chagga people. On the north-western side are traces of possible Neolithic and Late Iron Age occupation, both of which have links to the west or north-west.","PeriodicalId":243659,"journal":{"name":"Azania:archaeological Research in Africa","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114652468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His work, of which this is a preliminary report, has been undertaken under the auspices of the Koobi Fora Research Project of the National Museums of Kenya. The area to the north-east of Lake Turkana has proved to be extremely rich in archaeological material. Over thirty-five sites were discovered and a significant proportion either excavated or surface sampled. Sites containing bone harpoons and fish remains were the primary focus of the research project and at least thirteen occurrences were discovered. Later sites with domestic animals, various forms of decorated pottery and stone bowls were also investigated.","PeriodicalId":243659,"journal":{"name":"Azania:archaeological Research in Africa","volume":"11 14","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120863485","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
