The breakdown characteristics of oxide were estimated by the dielectric characteristics and the structure measurements for the specimens compared with those of the process temperature. Choosing the electrical characteristic and the pollution level of thin oxide as valuation items, we measured c-v plot, breakdown characteristics. In applying to the low electric field, it does not matter, but in applying to the high electric field, it became serious, if the oxide layer contains micro defects. The thickness traps and the various kinds of ions on the layer interface have a great influence on the characteristic of devices.","PeriodicalId":239585,"journal":{"name":"ICSD'01. By applying the voltage from 60 V to 2000 V, the charging current and loss current of a non-penetrated water treed XLPE sheet sample more increase with voltage than those of a non-degraded one. It has been found that the conductivity of water-filled channel region in low electric fields increases with increasing voltage from fitting observed magnitudes and phases of fundamental wave and 3rd harmonic component to calculated ones based on the model. It is found that the conductivity of water-filled channel region depends on the length of water-filled region.","PeriodicalId":239585,"journal":{"name":"ICSD'01. An extensive literature exists describing the nature of the failure of polyethylene under mechanical stress. The initial failure is considered to be the generation of sub-microscopic voids, which coalesce to form a crack, and is accompanied by chain scission and electromagnetic radiation. These features bear remarkable resemblance to those, such as trees, appearing in electrical breakdown. If electrically induced mechanical stress is indeed a significant factor in electrical breakdown, then it might be expected that marked changes in the viscoelastic parameters of the polymer, indicative of morphological change, might accompany electrical stressing. Moreover such changes might appear at stresses well below those for breakdown. To test this there are a number of ways in which conventional mechanical testing at low frequency might be adapted to allow simultaneous electrical stressing. We have adopted an unconventional approach, employing a quartz crystal shear wave sensor to determine the shear wave moduli of polyethylene under electrical stress. The technique has been refined. We are now able to demonstrate that the changes in the mechanical viscoelastic moduli of polyethylene in response to electrical stress are quite complex and polarity dependent.","PeriodicalId":239585,"journal":{"name":"ICSD'01. It has previously been shown that it is possible to use RVM for detection of water trees in PE and XLPE cables. In this paper the authors present a methodology that allows the detection of water trees at low DC test voltage without the need for a reference measurement. This methodology makes use of a so called division spectrum, which is obtained from the results of two separate recordings of the polarization spectrum.","PeriodicalId":239585,"journal":{"name":"ICSD'01. In this paper we try to obtain a degradation equation for the relative elongation at break of a XLPE cable insulation aged under simultaneous action of heat and stationary electric field. During the accelerated aged it is possible to appear initial or retarding crosslinking phenomena in XLPE cable insulation. Two models have been proposed for the mechanism of microcavity formation and electrical tree initiation. One is the electron impact model. In this model, electrons injected from a metal electrode or conducting particle are accelerated in the polymer free volume by high electric field. These hot electrons collide with polymer chains to break them. The other is the photo-degradation model. Electroluminescence (EL) is a photoemission phenomenon observed before tree initiation. In this model, ultraviolet (UV) components of electroluminescence cause polymer degradation. In this paper, we compare these two models.","PeriodicalId":239585,"journal":{"name":"ICSD'01. To have confidence in the installation and to ensure system reliability, more sensitive on-site testing and on-line pd monitoring is required particularly for transmission class cables. Over the last ten years significant developments have been made and several techniques, including capacitive, dual capacitive, directional coupler, sheath interruption and inductive methods, have been proposed and partially put into practice Due to advances in material processing, manufacturing and factory test procedures, it is unlikely that the cable itself will normally exhibit pd activity. It is the cable accessories (the, joints and terminations) that are the most likely source of PD. Placing a capacitive coupler inside or close to the cable accessory is an attractive PD monitoring option However, a, full understanding of the technique is essential in order to maximise its potential application. This paper reports on some aspects of the theoretical characteristics of the capacitive coupler. Based on an equivalent circuit model, simulations to investigate the influence of different parameters on the performance of the coupler have been undertaken. Experimental results show good agreement with theoretical predictions.","PeriodicalId":239585,"journal":{"name":"ICSD'01.
