Caring for individuals with ASD could be emotionally and physically taxing. While understanding of ASD as a disorder and its impact on individuals with ASD has gained momentum, the awareness of the burden on families who care for these indi viduals is less established. This study evaluates these burdens based on a validated questionnaire. Sixteen parents or caregivers were interviewed on their day-to-day physical, emotional, social, cognitive functioning, communication, worry, and daily activ ity problems. Data on the child’s age, race, gender, level of functioning, comorbidities, family’s socioeconomic status, parental marital status, and secondary family members’ involvement and support were also collected. This case serial study demonstrated high family burdens in all aspects of functioning in the majority of families participated, especially in those with low levels of functioning, medical or behavioral comorbidity, and familial discourse. Sources of burden were discussed. The investigators hope to provide a basis for further extended studies on family burdens in ASD and other developmental disorders.","PeriodicalId":237045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132716203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the 21st century, and with all the developments and evolving the world is witnessing, it is a shame to see individuals with autism not properly schooled or educated just because of lack of money while others are on a long waitlist because the school or center where they should be admitted does not have enough budget to school them and is facing a challenge to remain sustainable. Those organizations have a societal mission in the first place; however, and because of their limited budget and in order to be sustainable, they can only accept a fixed and limited number of cases. What if there were ways to help these organizations manage the scarce resources they have? What if the organization’s efficiency and the employees’ performance are increased so that to decrease the hidden costs in the hope of efficiently managing the organization and thus manage the money through investing in a learning process accomplished through the socio-economic approach. This research paper investigates how adopting a socioeconomic approach to management can enhance the performance in an Autism center and therefore broaden the margin they have in the hope of lessening the waiting list and accepting more children with autism.","PeriodicalId":237045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125220687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two analysis methods were used: perception study and spectrographic analysis of child speech. Overall, it was found that the adults are able to recognize the child’s emotional state by the characteristics of his voice. The adults recognize the states of comfort and discomfort with equal probability when listening to the speech of typically developing children. In the speech of children with autism spectrum disorders adults better recognize the state of discomfort. Correspondence of the intonation contour of the typically developing child’s repeated word to the adult’s sample were determined better than intonation contour of the words repeated by children with autism spectrum disorders. These data can be used to teaching caregivers interacting with individuals with autism spectrum disorders.","PeriodicalId":237045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123299073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study is descriptive in nature. The locale of research was Shafique Psychiatric Clinic (SPC) and the study design includes the patients visiting psychiatrist working in the facility. The sample consisted of 400 patients, both convenient and purposive sampling techniques were used for data collection. The data was collected by conducting specialized interviews for the purpose of reaching diagnosis on the bases of ICD-10 and DSM-5. The date was quantitative in nature. The analysis of descriptive results revealed that both genders are equally suffering from neurotic disorders whereas psychotic disorders were more prevalent among male as compared to female population. Interestingly the age range varied for neurotic and psychotic disorders starting from as low as 7 years and as much as 80 years. Most of patients visiting the facility were uneducated thus enforcing the fact that low level of education is an important risk factor for mental health, and should be kept in mind in psychiatric prevention and mental health promotion. The hypothesis testing revealed that level of education was negatively correlated with psychiatric disorders. Education of the masses was concluded as primary intervention for the prevention of psychiatric disorder.","PeriodicalId":237045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115695481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients with ID experience psychiatric and behavioral problems at three to six times the frequency of the general population [4]. The impact of aggression is substantial. For the patient, it can equate to a decrease or termination of family involvement, social isolation, or placement in more restrictive environments. For the caregiver, it can result in negative transference toward the individual with ID, caregiver anxiety, burnout, or injury. For society, it often results in the cost of resources such as frequent hospitalization or incarceration.","PeriodicalId":237045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116469414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DTT involves a teacher presenting an antecedent to the child, waiting for the child’s response, and then providing a consequence for that response (either a reinforcer for a correct response or non-interaction for an incorrect response). The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the Fazzio and Martin DTT self-instructional manual plus video (2011) with mothers of children with ASD as the participants. A multiple-baseline design across a pair of participants was used, and replicated across a second pair. During the baseline assessment, a participant was asked to teach three tasks (pointing-to-named pictures, identity matching and imitation) to a confederate role-playing a child with ASD. The participant was given one-page summaries for each teaching task and no additional information. Once baseline data was collected, the participant had the opportunity to study the self-instructional package, after which she conducted a post-treatment DTT session with the confederate. If she did not achieve mastery (set at 80%) in post-treatment assessment she was provided with a feedback session on her DTT performance, and then conducted an additional DTT session with the confederate. Three of the participants were available to conduct a generalization session with her child. The treatment package was very effective for training two of the mothers with children with ASD to implement DTT, and somewhat effective for the other two mothers who required a feedback session.","PeriodicalId":237045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129170189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

T2P2C sees parents gradually learning teaching strategies under a teacher’s periodic education program and teaching model, then implementing intensive intervention in a natural environment to improve the children’s communication and cognitive ability. This study, by using a single-subject withdrawn design, probes into the effect of T2P2C on parental use of strategy and child communication behaviors. The study concludes that T2P2C effectively improved appropriate use of instruction, reinforcement and prompt strategies in parents of children with autism, and prompted children’s correct responses to parent’s communication acts. Parents indicated satisfaction with the project’s goals, procedures and outcomes.","PeriodicalId":237045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115555436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A web based survey was used to collect data on siblings of individuals on the spectrum. A sample of 10 females was finalized for the purpose of analyses. The mean age of the participants was 25.9 years (SD=9.21). The sample of 10 suggested a high proportion of respondents with scores above the cutoff point on the overt victimization and relational victimization scales suggest that siblings experienced high levels of victimization. From the sample, 70% met the diagnostic criteria for Major Depressive Disorder. In addition, 40% of the sample met the diagnostic criteria for Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Siblings reported high levels of support from family. Discussion related to future research, assessment and treatment are presented.","PeriodicalId":237045,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Autism & Related Disabilities","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-08-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134432588","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
