We describe it as Limacella subtropicana , which is characterized by its viscid, white to creamy pileus, white to the creamy stipe, changing to brown when bruised, subglobose basidiospores measuring 4.0–6.3 × 3.7–5.5 μm, an ixotrichodermal pileipellis with subcylindric to clavate terminal elements and the common presence of clamp connections in all tissues. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of ITS sequences and LSU sequences of nrDNA confirmed its placement in the genus Limacella . Mesua ferrea commonly called nagakeshar (Family, Calophyllaceae) is a well-known antiallergic drug in the Asian folk system of medicines. In the present work, pharmacological studies are done to provide scientific evidence for therapeutic potential of plants in allergic asthma. Asthma was induced in experimental rats with allergen suspension of ovalbumin and aluminium hydroxide followed by treatment with dexamethasone (2.5 mg/kg, p.o) or M. ferrea stamen extract (3.75 and 15 mg/kg, b.w., p.o). Biomarkers of inflammatory response including cell counts, Immunoglobulin E, cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-4, -5, -1 β , tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- α , leukotriene (LT)-D-4, and nitrite concentration in blood as well as bronchial (BAL) fluid were tested. Lung functions in asthmatic and treated animals were evaluated as breathing rate and tidal volume. Treatment with M. ferrea stamen extract (MFE) markedly (p < 0.001, p < 0.01 and p < 0.05) diminished infiltration of inflammatory cells, IgE, cytokines, and nitrites in blood/serum and bronchial fluid. Improvement in lung functions (p < 0.05) of asthmatic animals after MFE treatment also supports our findings. In the present study, a microemulsion system was developed with extract of Scutellaria salviifolia Benth (endemic), Sideritis libanotica Labill. subsp. linearis (Bentham) Bornm (endemic), and Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. Both and related microemulsion formulations were also investigated for their potential biological activities. Pseudo-ternary phase diagrams of formulations were constructed consisting of oil/ mixed surfactant/water emulsion system and a quaternary component. Antioxidant activity was determined by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging method. For antimicrobial activity determination, on the other hand, microdilution method was performed with Escherichia coli 25922, Staphylococcus aureus 29213, Candida albicans 14053, and Candida krusei 6258 standard strains. Tested extracts showed S. aureus-specific antibacterial activity with MIC values 64 µg/mL, 256 µg/mL, and 512 µg/mL for S. libanotica subsp. linearis, S. salviifolia, and Z. clinopodioides, respectively. For any other tested strain, considerable antimicrobial activity was not observed (MIC values > 1024 µg/mL). Related formulations were not superior to extracts in terms of antimicrobial activity. All extracts and related formulations appear to have antioxidant activity, and the antioxidant capacity of all formulations is higher than the extracts. When compared to ascorbic acid, formulation of S. libanotica subsp. linearis extract has stronger antioxidant activity. Sideritis libanotica subsp. linearis extract had a remarkable antibacterial activity against S. aureus. It also had a stronger antioxidant capacity than ascorbic acid. Besides, all formulations developed from extracts had antioxidant activity enhancing properties, although they did not contribute to antimicrobial activity. The seeds powder was extracted by maceration in n-hexane. The oil content of the seven lines was ranged from 20.04% to 36.65% and was either yellow or pale yellow in color. No significant variations were observed on the refractive index (1.46 unit) of the oil. Oils of the seven lines were significantly ( p ˂ 0.05) different in their saponification values (32.13–282.66 mg KOH/g oil), peroxide values (1.76–13.26 mg KOH/g-oil), acid values (0.016–1.766 mg KOH/g oil) and free fatty acids content (6.26–72.23 mg KOH/g-oil). The chemical profile of the oil revealed that line APO42 contained the highest amount of monounsaturated fatty acids (55.9%). All the seven lines contained a considerable amount of linoleic acid (27.5%– 42.5%), and it represented the major compound in lines BOH3 (42.5%) and H1733 (39.8%). The variation was remarkable in their oleic acid content where the highest amount was observed in lines APO42 (55.4%) and APO43 (42.2%), respectively. Lines BOH3, APO43, APO41, and H1733 exerted the best total antioxidant activity in addition to their capacity to reduce Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ , while lines H1733 and APO43 had a metal chelating activity as well. All oils showed weak acetylcholinesterase, butyrylcholinesterase, α-glucosidase and α-amylase inhibitory activities. Only four lines showed considerable enzyme inhibitory activity against tyrosinase enzymes. Multivariance analysis suggested that linoleic acid participated in the observed biological activity of the oils.
