The specific results of regulatory event testing show that many regulatory changes produce large significant impacts on the meat processing industry, in this study shown to be as large as 4% of shareholder wealth for a single informational event. The effects of each specific regulatory change on shareholders is dependent upon the type of regulation examined. These large impacts on the wealth of shareholders indicate that regulatory agencies and the regulations they create often serve the industry, as well as consumers. Finally, in this paper a refined Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) analysis that adjusts for an errors-in-variables problem arising due to nonsynchronous trading is utilized which may be useful in future event studies relating to the agricultural sector.","PeriodicalId":231767,"journal":{"name":"Journal of agricultural economics research","volume":"582 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123934289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Net value-added is changing a more appropriate economic measure to use in comparing farms by size or type on a consistent basis. Net value-added emphasizes the net returns to farm households from the use of their land, labor, capital, and management in agricultural production. Net value-added as a percentage of gross farm income is highest (over 60 percent) on vegetable, greenhouse and nursery, and cash grain farms. It is much lower on livestock farms that buy substantial amoungs of their inputs (fed cattle and hogs). Wider use of net value-added directs attention to the economic impact of resources used in agricultural production in the form of returns to those resources.","PeriodicalId":231767,"journal":{"name":"Journal of agricultural economics research","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125229736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast, this study illustrates how to measure the exercise of market power when growers collectively control the quantities sold to a market use via a Federal marketing order but exert no control on the quantities produced. The hypothesis that California-Arizona navel orange growers exercised some market power (but not complete monopolistic power) before 1983 could not be rejected. Growers exercised less market power from 1983 on when a USDA policy change curtailed growers' use of marketing order volume controls.","PeriodicalId":231767,"journal":{"name":"Journal of agricultural economics research","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116700463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We explored the dynamic aspects of the estimated price transmission models of these two periods. Statistically significant evidence suggests a change in the dynamics of these price transmissions between the two periods. Price-increasing shocks to corn production are now more likely to be passed on to consumers more quickly as prices increase. Evidence also suggests that, since the early period, corn has become an increasingly important factor in explaining poultry prices, and substantial market change has occurred in the poultry industry at the retail level.","PeriodicalId":231767,"journal":{"name":"Journal of agricultural economics research","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121857252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
