While DeLillo sharpens his critique of Western capitalist homogenization and the American mass mind in Mao II, the novel fails to provide a meaningful exploration of the shared ideological mechanisms linking the loss of individuality endemic to terrorist ideology and to the conformist tendencies of Western postmodern subjects. Instead, anxiety about the potential obliteration of individuality leads Mao II to renounce collectivity altogether, which it depicts as a mere ‘crowd’ associated exclusively with the non-American and the non-Western. The individuality portrayed in Mao II expresses its identity and autonomy at the cost of extreme solitude, rejecting any possibility of connection or solidarity with others. Such a self-enclosed, self-referential concept of individuality, which is explicitly advocated by the protagonist Bill, offers no viable solution to the crisis of Western democracy diagnosed by the novel. This paper argues that the novel’s limitations stem from DeLillo’s inability to imagine alternative forms of freedom, individuality, and collectivity.","PeriodicalId":230828,"journal":{"name":"Institute of British and American Studies","volume":"18 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140409546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on research data on extensive reading, the integration strategy that EFL learners use to read is discussed as to whether it effectively promotes the cognitive aspect of reading abilities and learner autonomy in EFL learners. In addition, this study analyzes a top-down approach and bottom-up approach for voluntary extensive reading and suggests significant insights for foreign language reading instruction. In summary, the top-down approach with a focus on interactive extensive reading shows that the learner-centered extensive reading emphasizes meaning-centered comprehension, together with a positive attitude and enjoyment of reading. By promoting extensive reading, educators aim to create an environment where learners can naturally develop their foreign language skills through exposure to authentic texts.","PeriodicalId":230828,"journal":{"name":"Institute of British and American Studies","volume":"7 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140409809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The relationship between previous U.S. historical events and the September 11 attacks has not been examined in depth by the mainstream media, despite terrorism on U.S. soil not being unprecedented. \u0000Meanwhile, counter-narratives in literature and films have wrestled with self-pity, but have not been able to overcome completely the official narrative ornamented by patriotism and sentimentalism. However, counter-narratives have challenged the notion of the September 11 attacks as an isolated and unprecedented historical event. Instead, they posit that these attacks should be understood within the broader historical trajectory of the relationship between the United States and the rest of the world. In addition, the voices of “the others” have been heard and embedded within the context. Through these representations, the impact of the September 11 attacks can be reevaluated and reinterpreted beyond collective trauma and victimhood. \u0000Falling Man suggests a counter-narrative by challenging the stereotypical chronology of narrating a story and shedding light on “the others’” voices using a multi-perspective approach. DeLillo attempts to avoid the trap of the disaster genre and pursues an alternative way of describing the unique characteristics of 9/11 with its circular structure or Möbius time loop. The novel also includes the narratives of survivors, survivors’ families, a former terrorist, and hijackers while wrestling with the issue of how to represent the September 11 attacks, even though the attempt is limited to allow a relatively small portion of the hijackers.","PeriodicalId":230828,"journal":{"name":"Institute of British and American Studies","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121188535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To achieve the purpose, first, this study examines semantic and pragmatic differences that ‘tasi’ and ‘tto’ trigger in terms of the readings of ‘restitutive’ and ‘repetitive'. Second, it shows that the two restitutive and repetitive readings can be explained in terms of the difference in syntactic position. That is, for the former, if any, an event modifying adverb falls within the VP headed by the verb in question; for the latter, it appears outside of the VP. Third, the current study contends that both ‘re-’(verb) and (verb) + ‘again’ have in common the same function to denote the repetition of the event in question, whereas ‘re-’(verb) is used more restrictively than (verb) + ‘again’. In other words, ‘re-’(verb) is possible only if there is an object to undergo the event represented by the verb, and it is restored to the previous state as a result of the event.","PeriodicalId":230828,"journal":{"name":"Institute of British and American Studies","volume":"385 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116486461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contemporary terms, motherhood tends to be defined as a feminine experience in which the relationship between mother and child is created, whereas Rukeyser's motherhood poetry emphasizes the intersection of such motherhood with the public values of society and the expansiveness of lyric poetry. Living in a time of upheaval and chaos in the war-driven world order, Rukeyser needed to keep a keen eye on the world as the space in which she and her child lived and would live, and thus it was inevitable for her to discuss motherhood in public discourse. Thus, the environment of motherhood brought about an ongoing search for her own place in the public sphere, and if this search can be seen as self-creative in nature, then motherhood poetry, which poetizes this search can be understood as a work that poetizes ongoing social participation. Through a reading of Rukeyser's work that expands the lyrical subject of the poems from the self to the public space, this paper examines how the individual specificity of the maternal experience expands into the universal experience of women and what that means for our reading of the poems today.","PeriodicalId":230828,"journal":{"name":"Institute of British and American Studies","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127939455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Britain’s decision in the late 1960s and early 1970s to withdraw her troops from Southeast Asia and to join the European Economic Community had a negative impact on her diplomatic relations with various Commonwealth partners, including her traditionally strong bond with New Zealand. This was evident in the increasing anti-British sentiment amongst the people of New Zealand and in the introduction of anti-British policies by the Wellington government in the early 1970s. Consequently, Britain actively sought to placate New Zealand’s feelings and to improve Anglo-New Zealand relations by agreeing to accommodate New Zealand Prime Minister Robert Muldoon’s policy of allowing former IRA detainees in Northern Ireland to emigrate to New Zealand, even though this meant that Britain’s controversial detention policy in Northern Ireland could be laid bare to global scrutiny. London’s high-risk decision to give unofficial advice to Wellington on the suitability of candidates for emigration had to be concealed in order to give the impression that the British government was not in any way involved in New Zealand’s decisions. Therefore, when questions were raised in the British Parliament over the question of London’s involvement in Muldoon’s scheme, the British government went so far as to mislead the Commons on the issue.","PeriodicalId":230828,"journal":{"name":"Institute of British and American Studies","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122651348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, relatively few studies investigated the diverse aspects of the L2 use of subordinating conjunctions within a single study. The present study analyzed three representative subordinating conjunctions, if, when, and because as used in a proficiency-stratified Korean EFL written corpus in terms of their frequency of occurrence, grammatical accuracy, and linear ordering relative to the main clause. The results revealed that the proficiency effect on frequency and grammatical accuracy varied among the three subordinating conjunctions, whereas that on linear ordering of subordinate clauses was uniform across conjunctions. The findings provide implications for a better understanding of L2 adverbial subordinate clauses and its application to teaching practice.","PeriodicalId":230828,"journal":{"name":"Institute of British and American Studies","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124889573","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article attempts to counteract this traditional methodology and embraces a novel technique to read Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray by conjoining a theoretical framework with a digital tool. Ultimately, this study aims to apply a linguistic approach that incorporates Raymond Williams’s notion of “structures of feeling” to interpret The Picture of Dorian Gray as an early modernist novel that constitutes a fin de siècle social critique of nineteenth century England. The study uses linguistics computational tools called AntConc and Voyant to achieve its academic objective and, in the final phase, reconsiders the significance of Franco Moretti’s distant reading. Lastly, it visualizes the collaborating processes of a comparative reading constructed through the organic synergy of cooperation between theory, text, reader, and digital tools.","PeriodicalId":230828,"journal":{"name":"Institute of British and American Studies","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131277682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 1998, while recognizing the domestic legal effect of the European Convention on Human Rights, the right to assembly was also accepted in society. However, there is a limitation that the statutory law does not regulate the overlapping assemblies which have various problems. Nevertheless, English courts present a legal judgment on the issue of overlapping assemblies based on the relevant provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights and the precedents of the European Court of Human Rights. Regardless of the order of notification of overlapping assemblies, it is judged first whether the substantive contents of the assemblies conform to the characteristics of the rights to be protected by the European Convention on Human Rights, and whether an assembly is worthy of protection as a 'peaceful assembly'. Even if intervention by state agencies is unavoidable, such interference must minimally violate the right to assembly, and must have a legal basis, a legitimate purpose, and a necessity for a democratic society. It is understood that, on the basis of these conditions, state bodies may prohibit or restrict overlapping gatherings. This tendency is interpreted as suggesting that multiple factors should be substantially evaluated for each case, rather than formally limiting the overlapping assemblies.","PeriodicalId":230828,"journal":{"name":"Institute of British and American Studies","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121517435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Skim is 16 years old and attending a Catholic girls’ high school in Toronto in the 1990s, where most students are white and thin. Due to her non-whiteness, queerness, fatness, depression, and interest in Wicca, Skim experiences discrimination, marginalization, and exclusion at school, which lead to daily trauma for her. Trapped within in her loneliness, Skim eats as a defense mechanism against the normalized daily trauma. This eating, in a vicious circle, leads to more fatness and causes her to become an object of ridicule and stigmatization, ultimately leading to suicidal depression. Skim is singled out as a person who is the most likely to commit suicide at school and thus faces institutional control, surveillance, discipline, and oppression led by her teachers and peers, who consider Skim’s fatness (a physical disability) and depression (a mental illness) to be an individual problems to be fixed or eliminated with the help of school-based suicide prevention programs. In this paper, I will examine how Skim helps readers understand youth suicidal depression and eating disorders in connection with sexism, ableism, racism, sanism, and heterosexual normativity, all of which are deeply rooted in Canadian society. In addition, I show how Skim, presented in a diary format, resists the triumphant narrative of “getting better” and ultimately contributes to eliminating the prejudice that young people marginalized due to fatness, queerness, non-whiteness, and suicidal depression face, making them powerless, passive, and voiceless in Canadian society.","PeriodicalId":230828,"journal":{"name":"Institute of British and American Studies","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128086870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
