The buffer memory consists of a two-dimensional array of polarization bistable VCSELs, in which the bit state of the optical signal, ldquo0rdquo or ldquo1rdquo is stored as a lasing linear polarization state of 0 or 90deg. Input data stored as the polarization states of the first VCSEL are transferred to the polarization states of the second VCSEL. In our experiment using 980 nm VCSELs, 10 Gbit/s optical buffering has been successfully demonstrated. We have also demonstrated polarization bistability and all-optical flip-flop operation in 1.55 mum VCSELs.","PeriodicalId":230802,"journal":{"name":"2008 10th Anniversary International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127790812","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of this work is to develop diode pumped green erbium-doped glass up-conversion waveguide lasers, instead. Planar fluoride glass waveguides are fabricated using a spin-coating technology. Until now, planar fluoride glass film waveguides with thicknesses are achieved down to 30 mum. The waveguides were doped with up to 3 mol% erbium. Scattering losses of 0.2 dB/cm at 975 nm and strong green emission at 520 - 550 nm is observed in erbium-doped waveguides 50 mum in thickness.","PeriodicalId":230802,"journal":{"name":"2008 10th Anniversary International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129206406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They are algorithm optical codes (ADCs). This family is related with the recently introduced family random optical codes (ROCs). Both families of codes are designed to be used in optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) systems. Similarly than their predecessor, i.e. ROCs, ADCs are specially suitable for optical networks where the number of channels varies, ever large, low bit rate requirements, energy limitations and packed data are presented. For example sensor networks demand these requirements. A detailed description of AOCs is shown in this paper. Furthermore a comparison between them and ROCs is presented. We find that AOCs provide less probability of error than ROCs, for a given length of the code and a number of users. Moreover a system using AOCs can change the length of the code easier than a system using ROCs. This fact permits a more efficient accommodation to the actual number of users. Finally the implementation in an intra-spacecraft telecommand and telemeasurement (TC/TM) optical wireless network is also described. We compare the families in the intra-spacecraft optical wireless network.","PeriodicalId":230802,"journal":{"name":"2008 10th Anniversary International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks","volume":"192 S536","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132905251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is based on the modulation of the resonator proper equidistant spectrum under the influence of the external electromagnetic radiation of the infrared spectral range, which changes the optical properties of the sensitive element material. The structure and principles of operation of the matrix converter of infrared images into visible ones on the base of a matrix of the waveguide microring resonators are investigated. It is shown that sensitivity of such converter to the variation of infrared radiation power can be as low as 2.6middot10-12 W.","PeriodicalId":230802,"journal":{"name":"2008 10th Anniversary International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130373108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is well known that PMD may arise from a very bad section within a long fiber due to some external forces such as torsion, bending, etc. This work investigates the effect of the position of a bad fiber within a long link; the bad fiber is investigated in three places, at the beginning, the middle and the end of the fiber link.","PeriodicalId":230802,"journal":{"name":"2008 10th Anniversary International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130420334","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The upstream wavelength is established in a loop configuration by a remotely pumped Erbium-doped fiber and a wavelength selective feedback. By combining this upstream channel modulated at 1 Gb/s by a cheap and simple device at the customer premises with a downstream signal modulated at 10 Gb/s, a cost-effective solution for long reach access networks with a high density of possible customers is given by taking advantage of utilizing the L-band for separation of the data streams and extending the numbers of useable wavelength channels.","PeriodicalId":230802,"journal":{"name":"2008 10th Anniversary International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117232026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Corresponding Helmholtzpsilas equations, boundary conditions and the expression for power flow density in complex media are derived in the terms of MSE for TE and TM electromagnetic waves. TE and TM waves incidence on multilayer structures comprising alternating quarter-wavelength dielectric or magnetic layers of high and low permittivity or permeability is analysed. The reflectance peculiarities on the angle of incident wave, distributions of electric and magnetic field amplitudes inside the considered structures are obtained. For a structure consisting of dielectric or magnetic layers the full transmission state is observed at Brewster angle for TM and TE waves, correspondingly.","PeriodicalId":230802,"journal":{"name":"2008 10th Anniversary International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131039415","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since one can operate either in the spectral or in the time domain, a variety of implementations exists. As an example for the spectral filtering, we demonstrate an integrated pulse shaper using far-field grating diffraction. For fabrication, ultraprecision micromachining was used. As examples for operating in the time domain, we present two approaches for the implementation of optical tapped delay lines. One is based on the use of optical near-field diffraction and the self-imaging effect. The second uses a linear retroreflector array which is demonstrated as a variable temporal beam splitter.","PeriodicalId":230802,"journal":{"name":"2008 10th Anniversary International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks","volume":"267 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132384887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A new design that structures the air-holes in a single ring, according to a polygonal symmetry, around a solid core has been proposed. Octagonal and decagonal symmetries have been considered to design fibers less affected by the penalties arising in bending conditions, in particular the loss and the guided mode field distortion. The bending properties of different fibers with an effective area of 1400 mum2, confinement loss lower than 0.3 dB/m for the fundamental mode, and about 1 dB/m for the first higher order one at 1064 nm, have been analyzed and compared. Simulation results have shown that the mode distortion, evaluated through an overlap factor on a circular core region, as well as the loss value, can be reduced when considering photonic crystal fibers with a decagonal symmetry.","PeriodicalId":230802,"journal":{"name":"2008 10th Anniversary International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128208470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
