We build on recent studies reporting an increased awareness generated by ecofeedback systems that also integrate micro-production information, taking advantage of a closed grid production network on an island with a high concentration of renewables, we deployed the What-a-Watt system in a building with 9 households for a period of 34 consecutive weeks. Results show that all the participating families have shown increased awareness of the production and distribution of electricity, thus becoming more familiarized with concepts such as the different sources of energy and how their availability relates to external variables such as weather conditions and time of day. Furthermore, our results also show, that the families using our system have managed to reduce their overall consumption. This research is a first attempt to provide more effective eco-feedback systems to consumers by integrating complex Smartgrid information in the feedback.","PeriodicalId":229673,"journal":{"name":"2015 Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability (SustainIT)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117011123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We show how a pervasive technology such as sound can be used as a method of interaction between low-end feature phones and information kiosks built using standard PC monitors. By connecting an embedded computer to a monitor we show how we are able to create an interactive experience driven by the user's phone using a variety of interfaces ranging from music players to web browsers.","PeriodicalId":229673,"journal":{"name":"2015 Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability (SustainIT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115970284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, very little published research has examined the energy impact of this growing traffic type on a global scale (on client systems, servers and in the network). We summarise results and lessons learned from our measurement-based experiments on the energy use of digital video. By providing users with appropriate information and feedback, we could enable changes in user behaviour to save energy during use of digital video. We discuss the ongoing development of our benchmark tool which generates information on energy usage for users or other interested stakeholders.","PeriodicalId":229673,"journal":{"name":"2015 Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability (SustainIT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130962214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, while these models have assumed that access points (APs) start up in zero time, experimentation has showed that this is hardly the case. In this work, we provide a new model to account for this time in the simple case of aWLAN formed by two APs where the second AP is switched on/off dynamically to adapt to the traffic load and reduce the overall power consumption, and show that it significantly alters the results when compared to the zero start-up time case, both qualitatively and quantitatively.","PeriodicalId":229673,"journal":{"name":"2015 Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability (SustainIT)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125884026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Only recently, methods that join local knowledge and global weather forecasts have been shown to improve the prediction performance. However, making use of global weather forecasts requires network-wide dissemination with low energy and resource consumption. We present and evaluate a system architecture that automatically obtains global weather forecasts from freely available online resources and disseminates them into the sensor network. We implemented our system for sensor network hardware based on TinyOS and Java. We conducted a system integration test to verify the functionality of all components and evaluated the performance of the dissemination algorithm with testbed experiments. While we find that energy consumption is negligible and resource usage is low, dissemination was reliable with a low delay compared to the hourly interval of forecast updates.","PeriodicalId":229673,"journal":{"name":"2015 Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability (SustainIT)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123408863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Demand Side Management (DSM) refers to shifting consumers' energy usage to off-peaks as much as possible to avoid more electricity demand than available supply during peak times. Artificial intelligent planning algorithms have been applied to enabling electric devices to reschedule their operation to off-peak. One such algorithm is Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS), which takes advantage of tree search and random sampling on decision space in order to fine an optimal domain decision. In particular for DSM, MCTS has been used to control both smart meters and also electrical devices, In both applications, MCTS acts as a centralized consumption planner choosing the optimum approach for all devices in the space. Centralized computation thread limits these approaches in terms of flexibility and scalability. as applied in domains outside DSM, an alternative, decentralized MCTS algorithm, called Parallel MCTS (P-MCTS), allows every agent to run its independent MCTS thread to have its own solution. In thios paper, frist we studied the feasibility of applying P-MCTS in DSM to make demand planning more flexible and scalable. P-MCTS has been evaluated by running two different scenarios one with 6 electrical vehicles (EVs) and the other with 90 EVs which roughly results in 30% peak load shifting for P-MCTS. To improve the results of P-MCTS, we propose a new decentralized collaborative approach, called Collaborative P-MCTS (CP-MCTS), which exploits and extends P-MCTS to enable each electrical device to actively affect the planning process but also to improve the final decision using collective knowledge obtained during the collaboration. Additionally, in comparison with P-MCTS, CP-MCTS obtained better results, including more peak load shufting and smoother load curve due to 30% lower Peak to Average Ratio (PAR).","PeriodicalId":229673,"journal":{"name":"2015 Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability (SustainIT)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114182560","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Users can choose among several existing tools to determine the energy profile of a running application in order to provide more sustainable software. We conducted a field study in the SURFsara data center and we experimented with the tools available, assessing them in light of their informative power. We derived some recommendations for ICT users and infrastructure operators that highlight the relation between the intended use of the profile and the easiness of running a specific tool. We categorize users in two types: the generic user, who is interested in summary statistical results on power measurements and the software developer that intends to delve in the code details in order to reprogram the application more efficiently. We concluded that SLURM and Score-P are suitable for both types of users when their requirements are thoroughly studied and taken into account.","PeriodicalId":229673,"journal":{"name":"2015 Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability (SustainIT)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132582728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering independent Cloud providers, each one is exclusively bound to the specific energy supplier powering its datacenter. The situation radically changes if we consider a federation of cooperating Cloud providers. In such a context, a proper migration of virtual machines among providers can lead to a global energy sustainability strategy. In this paper, we present a new strategy to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions in federated Cloud ecosystems. More specifically, we propose a solution that allows providers to determine the best green destination where virtual machines should be migrated in order to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of the whole federated environment.","PeriodicalId":229673,"journal":{"name":"2015 Sustainable Internet and ICT for Sustainability (SustainIT)","volume":"234 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130939396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
