The \"descent\" label creates the impression that the Tionghoa ethnic are ethically and morally different from the natives. The 1998 May riots in Jakarta further exacerbated ethnic Tionghoa sentiment in Indonesia. The Tionghoa community is considered as \"others\" in terms of physical and cultural attributes, so they are not considered part of Indonesian society, even though they are Chinese Indonesians. This has caused the Chinese community in Indonesia to experience an identity crisis. Ethnic Tionghoa are faced with two identities between, Indonesian and Chinese, to blend into Indonesian society. This research seeks to describe the identity crisis of ethnic Tionghoa through female characters in the novel Naga Kuning by Yusiana Basuki. The intersection of gender theory and identity theory is used to analyze the phenomenon of the Tionghoa ethnic identity crisis in Indonesia. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. Data collection was done through literary studies. The results showed that Yusiana Basuki, through the novel Naga Kuning depicts discrimination and violence against Tionghoa women in Indonesia during the 1998 riots. The discrimination and violence caused an identity crisis in Tionghoa women. The identity that is built is a blurred identity caused by socio-political conditions. The form of identity crisis described in this novel is the downturn, fear, and alienation of women from the social life they live. Despite being a victim of harassment and violence, the character Lily is a Chinese woman who survives and tries to continue to rise in the face of various conflicts as a discriminated ethnicity.","PeriodicalId":228981,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics, Literature and Translation","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125393703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Climate change, wars with their millions of refugees, natural and man-made disasters, epidemics, food security, deforestation, and political disturbances are among the most recurrent problems. Many solutions have been tried with little or no success, leaving many of the problems intact. Important decisions are generally taken without enough discussions and the participation of all the stakeholders. Huge funds are sometimes spent by non-experts of the situation with no concrete solutions. From a theoretical perspective, this paper draws examples from Cameroon and Africa to highlight the importance of language and dialogue as means to solve some of the global challenges.","PeriodicalId":228981,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics, Literature and Translation","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132818905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on the concept of “employment precarity”, this study examines the predicaments that fresh university graduates encounter in Hong Kong in relation to social identity transition and job-seeking barriers. Using Critical Discourse Analysis, the researchers adopt a qualitative methodology to examine the written reflections of eight undergraduate students at a university in Hong Kong. (1) The findings reveal that students experience frustration, anxiety and uncertainty during the transition, indicating a need for improvement in the current pedagogical policies. (2) Recommendations are offered for higher education policymakers and universities to help alleviate these hardships. New sets of pedagogical strategies are developed to mitigate graduates’ exposure to employment precarity and to enhance their employability.","PeriodicalId":228981,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics, Literature and Translation","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114573108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, studies on it are only few, and most of them are based on traditional literary study methods. Corpus stylistics emerged in the 1980s, providing a new paradigm for literary research which transcends traditional literary research methods in many aspects. Based on ecocriticism, this study conducts a comparative study on the themes, language features and narrative perspectives of Silent Spring and A Sand County Almanac by using corpus tools. The results show that, as for the themes, Silent Spring pays attention to the intervention of human activities on nature, while A Sand County Almanac focuses on the charm of nature itself. In terms of language features, Silent Spring is more objective and convincing, while the language of A Sand County Almanac is more vivid. As for the narrative perspective, Silent Spring often uses an objective third-person perspective, while A Sand County Almanac uses a subjective first-person perspective. Although Silent Spring and A Sand County Almanac are different in themes, language features and narrative perspective, they both reveal a love for nature and strong awareness of environmental protection.","PeriodicalId":228981,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics, Literature and Translation","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130750246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bush's speeches during the Iraq War, with a focus on his use of epistemic modal adjectives to influence the international community's support for the war. The study draws on a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze the epistemic modality in six of Bush's speeches, including The State of the Union Speeches and The War Speeches. By utilizing Biber et al.'s (1999, p.5-6) categories of epistemic modality, the study categorizes the adjectives into \"Certainty\" and \"Likelihood\" and examines their underlying functions in persuading the public about the Iraq War. The findings highlight that the adjectives served five distinct functions, namely \"assertion,\" \"assumption,\" \"conviction,\" \"hedging,\" and \"likelihood/possibility,\" which were strategically employed by Bush to promote his policy and agenda towards the Iraqi government. The study emphasizes the crucial role of epistemic modality in political speeches and its potential impact on shaping public opinion.","PeriodicalId":228981,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics, Literature and Translation","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127952229","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It focuses on Okonkow's characterization levels, and highlights the ontological, individualistic, political, and social aspects of the main character's aspects. Achebe's novel is a rich example of the social and political corruption of the tribal system that is built on myths, tribal mentality and physical prowess. Such a masterpiece by the Nigerian Novelist, China Achebe, serves as an authentic representation of a particular time period and setting when Nigeria was under colonial oppression. It is thematically and stylistically rich in colonial accounts of Africa in terms of language use, traditional African lore, and cultural history.","PeriodicalId":228981,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics, Literature and Translation","volume":"13 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115105829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates the distribution and use of interactional metadiscourse in Cosmopolitan in 2022, as well as analyzes the role they play in the construction of persuasion. A total of 50 advertisements were included, and both qualitative and quantitive methods were used in the analysis. Based on the classification model of interactional metadiscourse proposed by Hyland (2005), this study calculated the frequency of interactional metadiscourse in ads and explained how the author used these metadiscourse markers to interact with consumers. Results revealed that attitude markers and engagement markers appeared most frequently. It means advertisers are primarily focused on consumers, as they are effective means of persuasion. The study concluded that interactional metadiscourse successfully fulfills its persuasive function and contributes effectively to the success of ads.","PeriodicalId":228981,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Linguistics, Literature and Translation","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126985266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
