Sağlık ve/veya etik sebeplerle bazı insanlar, otçul ya da tamamen çiğ veya günde iki öğün beslenme tiplerini seçmektedir. Tıbbi araştırmalar obezite, diyabet, hipertansiyon gibi kronik hastalıklar ve kanserin bu beslenme modelleri ile olumlu yönde ilişkili olduğunu göstermektedir. İyi planlanmış öğünlerle temel besin ögelerinin yeterince alınacağı ileri sürülmektedir. Vejetaryen, vegan, çiğ beslenme ve aralıklı açlık giderek daha fazla tercih edilmektedir ve hastalarımız arasında bu popülasyonu daha sık görebiliriz. Dünya üzerinde yılan ısırmalarına bağlı ölümlere oldukça sık rastlanmaktadır. En sık ısırmaya yol açan tür engerek (viperidae) yılanıdır. Yılan zehiri birçok toksik protein ve enzimin bir araya gelmesinden oluşan karmaşık bir yapıya sahiptir. Zehirin kardiyotoksik, nörotoksik, miyotoksik, nefrotoksik ve hematotoksik özellikleri vardır. Toksinin şiddetine göre hastada lokal ve sistemik belirtiler gözlenir.
