Regular audit of maternal deaths is\u0000vital to planning and maternal care delivery. The aim of the study was to evaluate and determine the trend of maternal mortality ratio in a Federal Medical Centre and analyze associated factors. A retrospective review of available data on all maternal deaths between January 2000 and December 2005 at the Federal Medical Centre Abakaliki was carried out.The 38 maternal deaths recorded out of 4193 deliveries during the study period resulted in a maternal mortality ratio (MMR) of 906 per 100,000 live births. In the two triennial intervals (Jan.2000- Dec.2002 and Jan.2003-Dec.2005) reviewed the MMR were 1017 and 799 per 100,000 live births respectively. The unbooked parturient accounted for over 74% of the deaths. Grandmultiparity, primigravidity, poor educational background,\u0000extremes of reproductive age and economic adversity were major factors associated with such deaths. Haemorrhage was the commonest cause of mortality during the period. Women's education and empowerment, provision of adequate and subsidized maternal care especially immediate postpartum are advocated to reduce maternal mortality to the barest minimum in Nigeria. The lack of rehabilitation facilities in our environment makes the operation a dreaded procedure. This study aims to ascertain the pattern of lower limb amputation in Baptist Medical Center, Eku, with regards to socio biological variables of the patients and indications for surgery. A 5-year retrospective review of all cases of lower limb amputations was done in Baptist Medical Center, Eku, Delta State between January 1st 2001 and December 31st 2005. There were 54 cases available for study; with an age range of 6 to 85\u0000years, mean age of 41.2 + 10.6 years and 72.2% of the cases were males. Below knee amputation constituted 57.4% of the cases and above knee amputation constituted 35.2%, with diabetic foot gangrene being the most common indication for amputation. The pattern of lower limb amputation in Eku is different from what is seen in other parts of the country. Early\u0000detection allows for interventions that will optimize the life of affected individuals. This study determines knowledge, attitude and practice of selfbreast examination among nurses in a tertiary health institution in Nigeria. It was a questionnaire based cross- sectional study that spanned 2 months (September-October 2007). Respondents were randomly recruited upon verbal consent. Ninety-eight respondents were got. The age range of the nurses was 20- 55 years, 54(55.1%) of them were nulliparous, 28 (28.6%) multiparous. Ninetysix\u0000(98.0%) of them have heard of breast cancer, mainly (68.4%) heard of breast cancer from the hospital. 69(70.4%) correctly knew that breast cancer starts as a small lump, and 58 (59.2%) knew that early detection ensure management and better outcome. 91 (92.9%) have heard of Breast self examination, mainly (64.3%) through seminars. Only 28 (28.6%) practiced SBE monthly, 77 (87.0%) did not adopt the correct steps. There is an urgent need for continuing education and in service training to improve the knowledge and\u0000practice of BSE among nurses because of their perceived role in awareness creation among the local population. Its use has increased steadily worldwide. However, some women reject it based on presumed complications associated with its use. Aim : To determine the complications reported by women, action taken on the complications and other associated factors in Orlu, Nigeria. Method : This is a cross-sectional study of 130 women who had IUCD insertions at the family planning clinics of Imo State University Teaching Hospital as well as its urban and rural practice centres (namely Anara Health Centre and Ogbaku Comprehensive Health Centre) both in Orlu Senatorial district between May 2008 and August 2008. Structured questionnaires were administered to consecutive women on follow-up visits at the Family Planning Clinics who are on IUCD. Information regarding age, parity, complications, reported action taken after the complication, clients' awareness of the availability of intrauterine device and duration of IUCD use were included in the questionnaires. Result : A total of 130 users were available for study. Heavy menstruation was reported by 50 (35.2%) women which was the commonest in this study; 65 (50%) did not do anything about whatever complication reported. The age range was 21-45years with a peak age group of 26-30 years. Majority of the clients 85 (65.4%) knew about IUCD from the hospital. More than half (46.2%) of the patients had between 2-5 children. The distribution of the duration of IUCD use showed that most of the clients had the IUCD for one year and less. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the colonoscopic and histological findings in patients referred for colonoscopy at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Methods: Colonoscopy was performed on consecutive patients that were referred for colonoscopy in the endoscopy unit at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, over a period of 18months (Dec2009-May2011). The biodata and clinical information of the patients were obtained from records of the endoscopy unit and the surgical day books of the department of histopathology. Results: A total of 37 patients were studied during the period under review. The male to female ratio was 1.3:1 with a mean age of 52±16 years. This study showed colonoscopic abnormality in 24(64.9%) patients while 13(35.1%) patients had colonoscopically normal mucosa. The most common colonoscopic abnormality was colorectal malignancy which was seen in nine(24.3%) patients. Chronic nonspecific colitis was the most common histological diagnosis and was seen in 17(45.9%) patients. The histological finding correlated with the colonoscopic findings in 16(43.2%) cases. Eight of the 13 patients (61.5%) with normal mucosal on colonoscopy had chronic nonspecific colitis on histology. Conclusion: This study shows that sampling of macroscopically normal colonic mucosa could reveal a colorectal lesion on histology, as such a routine biopsy for histology should be encouraged in all patients referred for colonoscopic evaluation.
