It ends with rupture before the end of the first trimester [2]. Case Report: We report a case of a 27 yr old primigravida with unruptured left ovarian ectopic pregnancy treated with a wedge resection of ovary laparoscopically. Post-operative period of the patient was uneventful. Conclusion: Ovarian pregnancies are rare, and unruptured ovarian pregnancies are rarer. Early detection and treatment plays an important role in prevention of serious complications.","PeriodicalId":228079,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnosis & Case Reports","volume":"9 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140416017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Study Design: A staff questionnaire was provided to assess baseline knowledge of the visual side effects of antipsychotic medication (the First Questionnaire). Subsequently, a short information sheet was provided regarding the visual side effects of antipsychotic medications. A Second Questionnaire for clinical staff was provided to assess reflections on knowledge gained. Results: 100% of respondents to the Second Questionnaire found the information sheet informative in refreshing or providing knowledge. 100% of the respondents to the Second Questionnaire also found the information sheet had improved their knowledge of the impact of antipsychotic on vision, and how it can be managed. 100% of respondents stated the information provided would influence their care of patients on antipsychotics and how they might approach care. Conclusion: Antipsychotic medications can cause ocular complications and visual side effects. Staff and patient education regarding these potential side effects can help promote patient safety.","PeriodicalId":228079,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnosis & Case Reports","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140414454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the cases are diagnosed in the first decade of life, being rarely described in adults. The majority of CTCs are located on the left side, the rest develop on the right side or in the midline. The patients present usually with a painless mass, rarely with compressive signs. The mechanisms of CTCs occurrence are still debated, failure of involution of thymopharyngeal duct, arrest in migration or retained thymic tissue during descent, being considered. Case Presentation: We report a case of a 49-year-old woman who presented a left laterocervical mass, with rapid growth over several months. The lump was soft, mobile and painless, no other clinical abnormalities were noticed. The ultrasound described an anechoic nodule of 57/38/63 mm at the inferior pole of the left thyroid lobe, raising the suspicion of a parathyroid cyst or branchial cyst. Contrast-enhanced CT scan confirmed the well-defined, homogeneous cystic lesion of 35/25 mm, located between the trachea and common carotid artery, being delimitated inferiorly by the left brachiocephalic vein. The aspiration of the cyst resulted in 40 ml of water-clear fluid, cytology examination confirmed the absence of thyroid or parathyroid cells. Surgery was performed, the pathological diagnosis confirmed the CTC. Conclusion: Although the thymic cyst is a very rare cause of a cervical mass in adult, the diagnosis should be kept in mind, based on clinical presentation, ultrasound and CT features, respectively aspirated fluid characteristics.","PeriodicalId":228079,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnosis & Case Reports","volume":"97 46","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139131876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study therefore looked into the possibility and level of difference in the management of the condition among patients resident in Sabon Gari Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State, Nigeria. The number of diabetic patients recruited for the study was 250 (aged 35 and above), comprising of 135 and 115 female and male patients respectively. A total of 5mL of blood was taken from the subjects after 10 hour fasting, out of which 3mL was centrifuged and the separated serum analysed for glucose. The remaining 2mL was analysed immediately for glycated haemoglobin (HbA1C). Samples were collected over a period of eight months after which comparison of parameters between both genders was done in order to determine extent of diabetes management. There was a significant difference between the parameters of the female diabetic patients (Mean Fasting Blood Glucose, FBG = 189±82.30mg/dL; Mean HbA1C = 8.5±3.18%) and those of the male diabetic patients (FBG = 223±89.00mg/dL; Mean HbA1C = 9.8±3.39%). The glycaemic markers were significantly lower (though still within the diabetic range) among the female patients as compared with the male patients. Conclusively, the female patients had their diabetes better managed and controlled than their male counterparts.","PeriodicalId":228079,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnosis & Case Reports","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128102417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus are two principal species of hookworm known to infect humans. A. duodenale is a soil transmitted helminths which enters through skin penetration in humans. Its infection lead to iron deficiency anemia (IDA), tiredness, etc. Case presented with chief complaint of breathlessness and anaemia. Investigations were done where on endoscopy few worm like structure was found in duodenum which on microscopy was confirmed as Ancylostoma duodenale. Followup and complete treatment was done. Hookworm infection is still an important issue for community health. Education programs on health and early intervention can help to tackle future complications.","PeriodicalId":228079,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnosis & Case Reports","volume":"232 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132579774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of malaria among out and in patients attending a referral hospital in Owerri South-East Nigeria between January and October 2019. Two hundred and thirty-five patients consisting of 114 males and 121 females were engaged in the study after obtaining their consent. Capillary blood samples were collected from finger-pricked blood using Rapid Diagnostic Test kit (ICT COMBO, Core Diagnostic, U.K) for detection of Plasmodium falciparum and pan malaria antigen Pf/Pan for non-falciparum species. The data were collated and analysed with descriptive and chi-square statistics with significance set at 0.5. The result recorded an overall malaria prevalence of 62.55%. Female patients had significantly higher (77.72%) malaria prevalence than males (51.75%) (p<0.05). Age-related prevalence of malaria within the study period showed that malaria prevalence across the age groups exceeded 50%, except for the age group 40-49 years with a prevalence of 45.61%. However, the age-related prevalence of malaria was not significantly different, (p >0.05). The result reveals an active transmission of malaria parasites which constitute a public health burden. There is a need for improved effort in the prevention and control of this scourge.","PeriodicalId":228079,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnosis & Case Reports","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124198685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Spironolactone, after oral tablet intake, reaches a maximum concentration in 2.6 hrs and an active metabolite (canrenone) reaches a maximum concentration in 4.3 hrs. When taken with food, its bioavailability increases to ~95%. Spironolactone has a half-life of 1.6 hrs, while its metabolite, canrenone, has a half-life of 16.5 hrs, thus prolonging the biological effects of spironolactone. Spironolactone and eplerenone compete with aldosterone for binding to intracellular receptors, causing decreased gene expression and reduced synthesis of protein mediator that activates Na+ channels in the apical membrane and decreased the number of Na+ / K +ATPase pumps in basolateral membrane. Side effects of spironolactone can cause side effects, such as fluid and electrolyte imbalance (hyperkalemia, hyponatremia), mild acidosis, and transient elevation of serum urea nitrogen. Spironolactone used as diuresis in congestive heart failure, ascites, oedema, and nephritic syndrome reduction of hypokalemia induced by other diuretics or amphotericin; primary hyperaldosteronism. Coadministration of diuretics (spironolactone) with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs escalated the pitfall of nephrotoxicity and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs deescalate the hypotensive effect of diuretics.","PeriodicalId":228079,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnosis & Case Reports","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123621265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Male Wistar albino rats (n = 25, mean weight = 215 ± 15 g) were randomly assigned to five groups of 5 rats each: normal control, diabetic control, metformin, extract (200 mg/kg body weight, bwt) and extract (300 mg/kg bwt) groups. Diabetes mellitus was induced in the rats via intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg bwt STZ. The diabetic rats were treated for 21 days with either metformin (50 mg/kg bwt) or the extract. Activities of antioxidant enzymes such as catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione reductase (GR) as well as molecules like reduced glutathione (GSH), total protein (TP), malondialdehyde (MDA) and nitric oxide (NO) were measured in heart homogenate. The results showed that induction of diabetes mellitus with STZ significantly increased the fasting blood glucose (FBG) concentrations of the rats, while decreasing the activity/concentration of antioxidant enzymes/ molecules (p < 0.05). However, treatment of the diabetic Wistar rats with the extract markedly reduced the FBG concentration and body weights of rats, but enhanced the activity/concentration of antioxidant enzymes/molecules in cardiac tissue (p < 0.05). These results indicate that ethanol extract of the medicinal plant fruit has the potential to promote antioxidant defense in the heart of STZ-induced diabetic rats.","PeriodicalId":228079,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diagnosis & Case Reports","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133135622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
