Data were collected through a survey of 150 randomly selected women from a sample of households. Focus group discussions, key informant interviews, participant observations, and a transect walk, provided supporting information to substantiate the household surveys. The chapter first outlines the theoretical foundation on which the research is based. This is followed by examining women's vulnerability in the study area. The chapter then describes women's coping strategies in the face of climate change-induced disasters. The chapter further explores women's adaptive capacity through the examination of their access to various services. It ends with a set of recommendations for policy makers in order to improve the situation of women's vulnerability.","PeriodicalId":228057,"journal":{"name":"Gender, climate change and livelihoods: vulnerabilities and adaptations","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115095832","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At first glance there appears little commonality between these countries and their responses. The focus of this chapter is on the women in agricultural communities in these countries, where families are now adjusting to the reality of ongoing climate-induced disasters by seeking new ways of supporting themselves. Where disasters have eroded communities and critical local resources (such as agricultural land, animals, and productive capacity), families face the need to restructure income generation. Universally these agricultural livelihood adaptations involve complex gender rearrangements as people reconfigure how best to adapt. The case studies presented here illustrate the significant restructuring in both developed and developing countries and the remarkably similar although complex gendered livelihood adaptations under way.","PeriodicalId":228057,"journal":{"name":"Gender, climate change and livelihoods: vulnerabilities and adaptations","volume":"84 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133069843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, the chapter starts with a brief overview on the state of the scientific debate on the interlinkages of climate driven environmental change and migration, followed by a discussion of conceptual approaches applicable for the inclusion of the gender dimension. The chapter provides empirical evidence for gender relevance using a case study on the West African Sahel and ends with some considerations on policy issues and further research. The chapter is divided into two sections: the first describes the history of the land tenure system in Kenya from the colonial to the post-independence eras, which exacerbated the land dispossession problem through forced evictions and displacement. Analyzing these historical processes is essential to addressing the causes of land injustice in Kenya, as well as to illustrating how these injustices continue to affect the health and well-being of senior women, which is the focus in the second section. Understanding these issues is important in tackling deprivations and vulnerability that women and children face, and for addressing deeper root causes of poverty.","PeriodicalId":228057,"journal":{"name":"Gender, climate change and livelihoods: vulnerabilities and adaptations","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128318399","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Sex-disaggregated data from two communities in Bangladesh are used to assess the gender differences in access to different sources and types of agricultural and climate information. The gender dimensions of awareness and adoption of these CSA practices are then explored in order to understand the extent to which information and knowledge gaps contribute to the adoption patterns of female and male farmers. Given that awareness is likely not the only determinant of adoption of CSA practices, a Heckman selectivity regression model was used to examine the correlates of adoption of specific CSA practices, taking into account the endogeneity of awareness. The chapter concludes by discussing the implications of the results and the need for increasing awareness and adoption of CSA practices by both women and men.","PeriodicalId":228057,"journal":{"name":"Gender, climate change and livelihoods: vulnerabilities and adaptations","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117282802","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study argues that climate shocks in Indonesia elevate the incidence of domestic violence via their impact on agriculture and agrarian livelihoods. Those relying on agriculture as a primary income source in Indonesia-approximately 41% of the population=suffer when climatic stress diminishes earnings through job loss and reduced crop yields. The impact can reduce food security, especially for subsistence farmers, but also for the broader population when scarcity elevates local food prices. Food already consumes 70% of household budgets for half the population, with rice comprising the largest share-over 25% of total household expenditures for the poorest quintile. Thus, even minor reductions in yields or inflation in local rice markets can have dire effects. These impacts are anticipated to exacerbate social and psychological pressures-stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance abuse-commonly associated with domestic and intimate partner violence, which in turn should increase its incidence within affected regions. This study uses data from the Global SPEI database and the NVMS to model the relationship between climate change and domestic violence in Indonesia. It finds that positive and negative deviations from long-term climate averages, when occurring in December-the core month of the Indonesian rice-planting season-increase the incidence of domestic violence in the following year. This relationship likely reflects the negative impact of climate shocks on agricultural sectors and livelihoods, an outcome which aggravates the emotional and psychological preconditions for domestic violence and abuse, disproportionately diminishes women's bargaining power in the household, and reduces women's ability to escape abusive situations. These effects are especially prominent in areas with higher levels of poverty, further illustrating the economic dimension of the causal process.","PeriodicalId":228057,"journal":{"name":"Gender, climate change and livelihoods: vulnerabilities and adaptations","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125350396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, climate change is a gender issue. Second, the gender implications of climate change are not universal; different social, cultural, and ecological contexts can require distinct diagnoses and prescriptions. Third, climate change generates a broad range of direct and indirect outcomes for women and their livelihoods. Fourth, for governments, a laissez-faire approach to dealing with the gender dimensions of climate change is not only insufficient, it is counterproductive. Fifth, while governments must be active in their approach to mitigating climate vulnerabilities and fostering adaptations, the content, design, and implementation of public policy is important. Finally, women have agency and are using it, as grassroots organizers and activists, and as mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, and community members fighting for their lives and livelihoods. The chapter also discusses the book's themes in light of the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic; and provides some directions and ideas for future research.","PeriodicalId":228057,"journal":{"name":"Gender, climate change and livelihoods: vulnerabilities and adaptations","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128949489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
