However, their catalytic activity and stability remain inadequate for practical applications. Here we implement an interfacial modulation strategy by coating cobalt oxide (e.g., Co<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>) nanocrystals with a single-metal-atom–modified, nitrogen-doped carbon (MNC) layer, and further optimize the interface between Co<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub> and MCN through single atom metal regulation. Across the series, Co<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>/MnNC exhibits a trend-like optimum, delivering overpotentials of 296 and 401 mV at 10 and 100 mA·cm<sup>–2</sup>, respectively, and showing excellent durability with only a 36 mV increase after 240 h at 10 mA·cm<sup>–2</sup>. Combining X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the Co–N–Mn structure is identified as the active site, while the coating layer suppresses surface structural relaxation of Co<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub>, thereby improving the structural stability. Moreover, <em>in situ</em> XAFS investigations confirm the formation of a stable Co–N–Mn interfacial structure under operational conditions. These results offer interfacial modulation as an effective route for high-performance, earth-abundant OER catalysts in acidic media.","PeriodicalId":225604,"journal":{"name":"Nano Research Energy","volume":"5 1","pages":"e9120215-e9120215"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2026-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://www.sciopen.com/local/article_pdf/10.26599/NRE.2025.9120215.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147920074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study employs 1 mol% N-(2-hydroxyethyl) succinimide (NHS) as a multifunctional electrolyte additive to address these issues. The carbonyl groups (C=O) in NHS can strongly coordinate with Zn atoms and water molecules, selectively adhering to the Zn anode surface to displace H<sub>2</sub>O, thereby suppressing parasitic reactions while simultaneously reducing water activity in the electrolyte. The NHS can regulate Zn<sup>2+</sup> solvation by replacing water molecules in the primary solvation sheath, thereby further facilitating Zn<sup>2+</sup> desolvation by reducing the number of bound water molecules. Additionally, the NHS on the anode surface enables a homogeneous Zn<sup>2+</sup> flux, resulting in uniform zinc deposition. As a result, the NHS enables a ZnZn symmetric cell to achieve 7,500 h cycling at 1 mA·cm<sup>−2</sup>, and a ZnCu cell to maintain 99.8% Coulombic efficiency over 3200 cycles. The ZnV<sub>2</sub>O<sub>5</sub> full cell retains 82.5% capacity after 7,000 cycles. However, achieving this in porous crystalline materials like covelent organic frameworks (COFs) for backend catalysis reactions remains scarce and challenging to date. Herein, a series of multi-metal-variate COFs (i.e., Quint-MMV-COF, Tetra-MMV-COF and Tri-<em>n</em>-MMV-COF (<em>n</em> = 1, 2 and 3)) have been prepared that can be applied in indirect electrocatalysis. These MMV-COFs with advantages of multi-metal sites, porous structures and appropriate work function can serve as solid-phase redox mediators for the catalytic production of liquid-phase S-S bond products and gas-phase H<sub>2</sub> product. Interestingly, the optimal Quint-MMV-COF presents excellent electrocatalytic efficiency for S-S bond products (yields up to 99%) and H<sub>2</sub> (~1.62 mmol·g<sup>–</sup><sup>1</sup>·h<sup>–</sup><sup>1</sup>) and can be readily recycled for 6 cycles. At the same time, 1.52 g product with a yield of ~92% can be obtained in the amplification reaction, showing much potential in industrial production. However, seawater electrolysis for hydrogen production still faces numerous risks and challenges at present. This study focuses on a systematic investigation of FeNiCo-based high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanocatalysts supported on carbon skeletons. By precisely regulating the morphological structure of the carbon skeleton, a carbon support with a large specific surface area and abundant active sites can be obtained. Simultaneously, the elemental composition of the HEA nanoparticles is adjusted to optimize its seawater electrolysis performance. An energy-saving strategy of coupling the anode sulfur oxidation reaction (SOR) with the cathode hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is employed to assist seawater electrolysis. In alkaline seawater, at a current density of 10 mA·cm<sup>−2</sup>, the overpotential of the HER is only 22 mV, and the overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is 264 mV. It also exhibits excellent performance in acidic seawater. In a two-electrode seawater electrolysis system, an applied voltage of 1.55 V is required to reach a current density of 10 mA·cm<sup>−2</sup>. More importantly, when using SOR to assist alkaline seawater electrolysis, the applied voltage is successfully reduced to 0.82 V.","PeriodicalId":225604,"journal":{"name":"Nano Research Energy","volume":"4 4","pages":"e9120196-e9120196"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://file.sciopen.com/sciopen_public/1969967695992004609.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147919547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Manganese dioxide is studied as one kind of cathode material, however, it typically displays slow kinetics and unstable crystal structures. Defect engineering introduces active sites in MnO<sub>2</sub>, while metal ion doping increases material's molar mass, which offers rare zinc storage contribution. To find a feasible doping strategy with optimized oxygen vacancies is highly desirable. Herein, the incorporation of nitrogen-doped MnO<sub>2</sub> (NMO) with lower electronegativity as the cathode enabled the realization of reversible aqueous zinc-ion batteries. The structural stability and electrochemical properties of NMO were enhanced by nitrogen doping. NMO exhibited a smaller charge transfer resistance than pristine MnO<sub>2</sub> (279.6 Ω vs. 484.5 Ω). Cyclic voltammetry curves displayed that the incorporation of nitrogen doping could decrease the polarization, which provided a good basis for optimizing electrode kinetics. Specifically, the battery displayed a promising specific discharge capacity of 153.1 mAh·g<sup>–1</sup> at 0.5 A·g<sup>–1</sup> after 100 cycles. And at the current density of 1 A·g<sup>–1</sup>, the capacity retention of NMO after 1600 cycles was 1.72 times that of pristine MnO<sub>2</sub>. Here, we report a charging-free redox flow battery for continuous high-power, low-grade heat harvesting based on thermosensitive crystallization-boosted TREC. Using molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT), we analyzed the mesoscopic intermolecular interactions, radial distribution, and solvation structure variations of [Fe(CN)<sub>6</sub>]<sup>3</sup><sup>−</sup>/[Fe(CN)<sub>6</sub>]<sup>4</sup><sup>−</sup> across varying temperatures. While many efforts have been made to enhance solar thermal conversion performance from materials design aspects, little attention has been given to the fundamental solar thermal gradient concept, which significantly affects local heating during evaporation. In this work, the polymer sponge evaporator was designed to control the solar thermal gradient by adding copper–carbon core–shell (Cu@C) nanoparticles with similar solar absorptance to understand the effect of solar thermal gradient or local heating on evaporation performance. The optimized solar evaporation can be 2.0 kg·m<sup>−2</sup>·h<sup>−1</sup> under 1000 W·m<sup>−2</sup> (one sun) with a Cu@C mass fraction of 0.5 wt.%, which was higher than that observed in cases with either higher or smaller Cu@C mass fraction. A too-small or large Cu@C mass fraction would enhance heat loss from the bottom or top parts, which was also confirmed by simulation results. Further outdoor water yield experiment showed that the optimized Cu@C mass fraction of 0.5 wt.% achieved the highest water collection (6.67 kg·m<sup>−2</sup>·d<sup>−1</sup>) compared with the other cases, such as 5.92 kg·m<sup>−2</sup>·d<sup>−1</sup> for 0.1 wt.%, 5.29 kg·m<sup>−2</sup>·d<sup>−1</sup> for 1 wt.%. These results highlighted the impact of local heating on evaporation performance under the solar thermal gradient during the solar evaporation process.","PeriodicalId":225604,"journal":{"name":"Nano Research Energy","volume":"4 2","pages":"e9120152-e9120152"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-01-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sciopen.com/article_pdf/1876557869350481921.pdf","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147332277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"OA","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
