This paper is devoted to the application of mathematical methods of classification and differentiation of low-resolution spectral data arrays of Raman light scattering for complex biological compounds as human platelets. Spectral data arrays consisted of 1266 spectra from 4 groups of patients, totaling 152 people were analyzed. A random forest algorithm was used. Potential biomarkers of differences between patient groups were identified, on which the given algorithms were tested. Using the random forest algorithm for classification of spectra of healthy patients without therapy and patients with cardiovascular pathologies without therapy, we have achieved the accuracy of 83.4%. Classification of the healthy patients on and off therapy shows the accuracy of 76.26% and classification of the patients with cardiovascular pathologies shows 70% accuracy. © 2023 Journal of Biomedical Photonics & Engineering.","PeriodicalId":224947,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biomedical Photonics & Engineering","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122287207","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many cases in the medical laboratory examinations when it is necessary to detect a vein in a patient and the blood vessels are not visible to the naked eye. In such situations, devices for optical vein visualization are required. Nowadays, the technology of optical vein visualization is promising, but it has a number of disadvantages. Moreover, no objective approach has been proposed to estimate visualization quality, which complicates the choice of technical parameters of a vein viewer. For this reason, a prototype of vein viewer with interchangeable and easily replaceable parts was presented in this paper. This prototype allowed to perform experiments changing the optical properties of the vein viewer. A new methodology of visualization quality estimation was developed. This new methodology allows to quantitatively estimate the visualization quality. Proposed technique is also almost independent of the human factor. The research involved 20 volunteers aged 20–24 with Fitzpatrick skin phototype III. Studies were carried out to evaluate the change in the output signal of the prototype under the use of different optical elements for the same object Thus, the influence of absorption long-pass optical filters HWB780 and HWB830 on the contrast of veins in relation to the skin surface when using two different LED illumination sources (850 nm and 940 nm peak wavelengths) was analyzed. The effectiveness of lenses with focal lengths of 3.6 mm, 16 mm, and 25 mm was observed. © 2023 Journal of","PeriodicalId":224947,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biomedical Photonics & Engineering","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131354130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, for the first time, a relationship was established between microstructural organization and biomechanical properties of breast-cancer tissue with pathomorphological changes caused by chemotherapy. To characterize texture of collagen fibers in the microenvironment of breast cancer, high-resolution visualization by Secondharmonic generation (SHG) microscopy was used. A side-by-side C-OCE and SHG imaging of patients’ breast cancer tissues before and after chemotherapy was carried out. Regions of the cancer stroma (collagen fibers outside aggregates of cancer cells) were assessed separately from regions of cancer cell clusters penetrated by collagen fibers. For cancer stroma areas after chemotherapy, a statistically significant decrease in stiffness values was found. Simultaneously, parameters of collagen texture in SHG images (mean intensity, “coherency” and “energy”) indicated increase in the collagen content, orientational orderliness, and collagen-texture heterogeneity. In contrast, cancer-cell areas post chemotherapy showed a statistically significant increase in stiffness. Analysis of SHG images of these regions indicated decrease in the inter-cellular collagen content and heterogeneity of its texture, whereas its orientational orderliness somewhat increased. The established negative correlation between stiffness and SHG parameters of collagen in cancer stroma indicates the contribution of the increase in orientational orderliness and total collagen content to the reduction in stiffness of breast cancer stroma after chemotherapy. For cancer-cell regions, significantly lower correlation between stiffness and SHG parameters (especially for coherency) was found, indicating stronger role of chemotherapy-induced changes in cancer cells themselves. These results give a deeper insight in the role of collagen texture organization in biomechanics of breast cancer tissues and contribute to a more detailed substantiation of the morphological characterization of breast cancer by C-OCE imaging. © 2023 Journal of Biomedical Photonics & Engineering. In this paper, we present the physical properties and toxicological assessment of layers with nanoparticles based on metal chalcogenides and titanium on human fibroblast cells. Nanoparticles layers based on metal chalcogenides (MoS 2 , WS 2 , ZnS) and titanium were applied onto substrate by spray deposition method. Nanoparticles and flakes were synthesized by laser ablation and fragmentation in liquid by femtosecond pulses. We investigated the size and morphology of the synthesized nanoparticles: WS 2 -based flakes have a polygonal shape with dimensions up to 600 nm, other types of nanoparticles have a shape closer to spherical with sizes from 50 to 150 nm. Interaction of ultrafast laser radiation with materials in liquid is accompanied by the dissociation of water molecules leads to formation of hydrogen sulfide and oxides. To assess the biocompatibility of layers with synthesized nanoparticles, the MTT assay was performed with fibroblast cells. According to in vitro studies, Ti-based nanoparticles have the largest biocompatibility, and WS 2 -based flakes have the smallest ones. Thus, synthesized Ti-based nanoparticles can be used in biomedical applications to support tissue regeneration without additional modification. Due to their properties, metal sulfides-based nanoparticles can be used in the photodynamic therapy of oncological diseases to destroy cancer cells. © 2023 Journal of Biomedical Photonics & Engineering.","PeriodicalId":224947,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Biomedical Photonics & Engineering","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128106190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
