It does so by using a mix of indirect and direct communication. The direct communication via radio signals allows for a faster exchange of data between the agents. This layered communication model allows for a robust data transfer that is needed in SAR scenarios, as the algorithm can still use the indirect part of the model if the direct part is not available anymore. Currently the exploration done by the agents is decided randomly without any intelligent input based on the gathered data. The agents will simply try to move along a line until they will hit an obstacle or a point of interest is found. This work introduces ways to steer the autonomous agents based on the collected data, additionally this data will be used to decide which part of the map should be explored next. Another optimization of the performance is also the increased cooperation between the agents, as the agents will also exchange these destination points, thus reducing the number of agents which will explore the same part of the area, leading to a greater spread of the agents through the terrain.","PeriodicalId":224620,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132519300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such data, referred to as objects, are handled along with their metadata allowing a web-based addressing as in the REST paradigm. According to the Software Defined concepts, SDS systems rely on decoupling the software plane (namely the set of management services), from the hardware plane (typically common, inexpensive and vendor unlocked hardware). SWIFT (a part of the OpenStack cloud project) represents a valuable example of an SDS system which, in the present work, we intend to characterize in terms of availability. Through such a characterization the minimum cost configuration can be selected, guaranteeing the so-called “five nines” availability requirement. The availability analysis is here performed by modeling the highlevel architecture of SWIFT as a Stochastic Reward Net (SRN) model. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis is performed to assess the system robustness with respect to variations of some model parameters.","PeriodicalId":224620,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132976008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We address the problem of deciding the transmission powers of the sources and relays so that the sum of the sources' transmission capacities is maximized. Due to the non-overlapping nature of the relays' signals, the problem can be represented as a constrained optimization over two variables, but such formulation results in a non-convex optimization. We transform this problem to an equivalent optimization problem over three variables for which the monotonic optimization (MO) can be employed. We discuss an algorithm that is guaranteed to terminate with an ε-optimal solution.","PeriodicalId":224620,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"2002 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133216330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This helps to take the right decisions before the system development and deployment. OGSSim is a simulation tool for large and heterogeneous storage systems that uses parallelism to provide informations about the behavior of such systems in a reduced time. It uses ZeroMQ communication library to implement not only the data communication but also the synchronization functions between the generated threads. These synchronization points occur during the requests parallel execution and need to be treated efficiently to ensure data coherency for the fast and accurate computation of performance metrics. In this work, different issues due to the parallel execution of our simulation tool OGSSim are presented and the adopted solutions using ZeroMQ are discussed. The impact of these solutions in term of simulation time overhead are measured considering various system configurations. The obtained results s how t hat ZeroMQ has almost no impact on the simulation time, even for complex and large configurations.","PeriodicalId":224620,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127958373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As these applications are often characterised by a huge number of data accesses, the computation efficiency often be heavily decreased by bank conflicts on account of non-aligned and irregular data accesses. This paper presents an efficient memory accessing unit called Mod-N Address for the DSP processor. The unit is designed for solving bank conflicts when data accessing is irregular or not aligned. The proposed architecture implements the conflict-free access by generating addresses through modulus operation and accessing along the diagonal. The structure adjusts the sequence of data when accessing and requires quite little changes to the instruction set. The unit had been implemented on our platform BWDSP104x, and the experimental results had shown that proposed unit achieves an 45% accelerate rate for FFT algorithm compared with the previous scheme. According to the comparison with the conventional methods, experimental evaluations also show that mod-N address can outperform by an average of 7.9% to 60% in performance.","PeriodicalId":224620,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115614037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this context. the use of Smart Antenna Systems (SAS) are providing a strong increasing impact in digital wireless communication systems. Because of their many benefits, this kind of systems are extremely used especially in pervasive network environments such as Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET). However, almost of the whole of existing network simulators use omnidirectional antennas on nodes, and in many cases, do not provide a support for asymmetrical and directional communications. In view of this, we intend to enhance Omnet++ network simulator features by designing a new switched beam smart antenna model for providing a support for directional communications. Our proposed model simulates the basic operation of a Phased Array System also exploiting a very simple algorithm for modeling power management in the channel in order to provide an asymmetrical communication behavior.","PeriodicalId":224620,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114953036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They can fairly act as access points serving users by forming a mesh network in the air. In disaster hit areas or battlefields, providing communication through infrastructure is impossible due to either time constraints or impracticable ground conditions. The UAVs can be dynamically deployed in such scenarios, forming a mesh network and thereby providing wireless coverage to the users. In this paper, we develop an algorithm, UAVs' Dynamic Positions Rearrangement (UDPR), based on the dynamic demands of the Hot Zones which strives to maximize the total coverage area by all the deployed UAVs hence, serving maximum number of users. Our algorithm caters to the dynamic changes in user load requirements for which the UAVs fly in flock to cover the Hot Zones, at the same time minimize the dead zones. UDPR ensures improved performance of the network by selecting UAVs based on minimum movement and maximum remaining battery life. In our algorithm, we compare two distance traveling approaches while rearranging UAVs: the Juxtapositioning approach (attaining closest possible position) and the Hot Center positioning approach (attaining the Hot Center's position). The Hot Center represents the epicenter of the area corresponding to the overload of spectrum demand in the Hot Zone. The simulation results show that the proposed Hot Center Positioning approach outperforms the primitive Juxtapositioning approach by covering more area (serving more number of users) and at the same time keeping more number of UAVs active.","PeriodicalId":224620,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124990349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We address here the case of data centers with more heterogeneous disk populations, such as the ones described in the BackBlaze datasets, and propose to build global disk failure predictors that would apply to disks of all makes and models. Our first challenge was the large number of SMART parameters that were missing for most makes and models in many disk instances of our dataset. As a result, we had to discard the SMART attributes that were missing in at least 90 percent of the disks, which left us with 21 SMART attributes. We then applied a Reverse Arrangement Test to these attributes to select the strongest disk failure indicators. We investigated three different machine learning models (Decision Trees, Neural Networks, and Logistic Regression) using the 2015 BackBlaze data to train and validate our predictors. Our best model was a decision tree that identified t rue failure events among the disks that tested positive for at least one of our failure indicators. We then used the 2016 BackBlaze data to evaluate its performance. Our results show that our decision tree identifies at least 52 percent of all disk failures and makes nearly all its predictions several days ahead: no more than 2.45 percent of the predicted failures occur within one day or two of the prediction. Finally, we compared the performance of our predictor with those of the RAIDShield and the original BackBlaze predictor. We found out that RAIDShield could predict at most 18 percent of disk failures, that is, 34 percent fewer failures than our decision tree while the BackBlaze predictor predicted 60 percent of disk failures but generated 4 to 5 false alarms per correct prediction.","PeriodicalId":224620,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130384189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We compare four urban path loss models: the urban/vehicular and pedestrian test environment from the ITU-R M. 1255 Report, and the two-slope Micro Urban Line-of-Sight (LoS) and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) models from the ITU-R 2135 Report. We show that when using the ITU-R two-slope model that considers the existence of a breakpoint in the behaviour of path loss, for coverage distances, R, up to break-point distance divided by reuse factor, supported cell throughput, Rb-sup, is much lower than expected when traditional single-slope models are assumed. For Rs longer than dBp/rcc the results for Rb-sup increase with R, whereas they are steady or decrease with R when using the traditional single-slope propagation models. We conclude that the two-slope propagation model yields a significantly lower throughput per square km than a traditional one-slope model if and only if cell radius is small.","PeriodicalId":224620,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124621072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many studies related to performance analysis have been conducted. Firstly, there are studies about workload modeling that model and analyze the observed workloads using statistical summaries. Also, there are studies to analyze system behavior and procedures through simulation modeling. However, there are some disadvantages to using only one approach for analyzing the complex system more accurately. Therefore, this paper presents cooperation between data modeling and simulation modeling for performance analysis of the system. The target system, Hadoop, is one of the representative big data platforms that can demonstrate the complexity of the analysis. Firstly, we identify the characteristics of Hadoop and divide them into two parts according to their characteristics. Then, we model and integrate them using each modeling approach. This paper presents the experiment to show the advantages of the cooperative modeling in the accuracy, execution time, and modeling extensibility.","PeriodicalId":224620,"journal":{"name":"2017 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131951575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
