We first discuss the coupling of X and Y valence bands due to the breakdown of roto-inversion symmetry at a semiconductor hetero-interface, with special attention to its dependence on effective parameters such as the valence band offset. The intracell localization of Bloch functions is explained from simple theoretical arguments and evaluated numerically from a pseudo-potential microscopic model. The role of envelope functions is then considered, and we discuss the specific case of no-common atom interfaces. Experimental results and applications to interface characterization are presented. These calculations give a microscopic justification, and establish the limits of the heuristic “HBF” model.","PeriodicalId":22452,"journal":{"name":"The European Physical Journal B - Condensed Matter and Complex Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89433004","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While earlier only the calculations for the lowest excited state of the dot were performed and only the limiting cases of strong and weak confinement were analyzed, in this work we present the results for the crossover region, obtained from the variational calculation. We also consider the transfer from the higher excited states, which may be relevant if the carrier relaxation in the dot is inhibited due to the discreteness of the states. We employ a microscopic quantum mechanical description of the Wannier-Mott exciton in the quantum dot and a macroscopic description of the organic medium. According to our calculations, for II-VI type semiconductors (like CdSe) and strongly absorbing organics (like PTCDA) the energy transfer may occur on time scales of several tens of picoseconds, which is significantly less than the quantum dot excitation lifetime in the absence of such transfer. Thus, as in the case of quantum wells, the Förster mechanism may be an efficient tool for pumping organic light-emitting substances. In this paper we also consider how the carrier intraband relaxation time in the dot may be affected by the Förster energy transfer.","PeriodicalId":22452,"journal":{"name":"The European Physical Journal B - Condensed Matter and Complex Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"90333073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although our model is asymptotically `monofractal' by construction, it shows apparent multiscaling as a result of a slow crossover phenomenon on finite time scales. Our results suggest that it might be hard to distinguish apparent and true multifractal behavior in financial data. Our model also leads to a new family of stable laws for sums of correlated random variables.","PeriodicalId":22452,"journal":{"name":"The European Physical Journal B - Condensed Matter and Complex Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89362362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The contribution of the one-magnon decay processes is strongly enhanced in comparison with the standard T-linear Korringa term, especially for the FM case. For the 3D AFM case this contribution diverges logarithmically, the divergence being cut at the magnon gap ω due to magnetic anisotropy, and for the 2D AFM case as ω-1. The electron-magnon scattering processes yield T2ln(T/ω) and T2/ω1/2-terms in 1/T1 for the 3D AFM and 2D FM cases, respectively. The two-magnon (“Raman”) contributions are investigated and demonstrated to be large in the 2D FM case. Peculiarities of the isotropic 2D limit (where the correlation length is very large) are analyzed.","PeriodicalId":22452,"journal":{"name":"The European Physical Journal B - Condensed Matter and Complex Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82299050","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, a complete stochastic characterization of volatility is still lacking. What is well known is that absolute returns have memory on a long time range, this phenomenon is known as clustering of volatility. In this paper we show that volatility correlations are power-laws with a non-unique scaling exponent. This kind of multiscale phenomenology has some analogies with fully developed turbulence and disordered systems and it is now pointed out for financial series. Starting from historical returns series, we have also derived the volatility distribution, and the results are in agreement with a log-normal shape. In our study, we consider the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), daily composite index closes (January 1966 to June 1998) and the US Dollar/Deutsche Mark (USD-DM) noon buying rates certified by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (October 1989 to September 1998).","PeriodicalId":22452,"journal":{"name":"The European Physical Journal B - Condensed Matter and Complex Systems","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1999-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88656620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
