This was the first space reactor test completed for fission power systems in over 50 years and marked a turning point in NASA’s nuclear program. The completed reactor power system design incorporated flight prototypic materials and full-scale components in an effort to study the reactor dynamics at full power and significantly reduce follow-on risk of a future flight demonstration. This design provided a unique opportunity for the power system to simulate several nominal and off-nominal mission scenarios that allowed the designers to verify that the reactor dynamics could tolerate many worst-case conditions regarding reactor stability and control. The dynamic changes imposed on the reactor validated the ability of the reactor to load follow the power conversion system and passively control the fuel temperature and overall system stability. Multiple chill-down tests were modelled using the heat transfer correlations that are available in SINDA/FLUINT, as well as incorporating heat transfer empiricisms developed by the University of Florida based on a series of liquid nitrogen chill-down tests. The chill-down tests that were modelled were the liquid nitrogen tests conducted by the University of Florida as well as liquid hydrogen tests conducted by NASA Glenn Research Center. The liquid nitrogen tests included horizontal flow, upward flow, and downward flow with the liquid Reynolds Numbers ranging 850 – 231,000. The liquid hydrogen test was vertical upward flow at a Reynolds Number range of 18,400 – 433,000. Both the University of Florida’s heat transfer correlations and SINDA/FLUINT’s internal correlations faired similarly to wall temperature test data. Simulations are carried out, to identify the most effective WTs distribution that improves the performance of the wind farm as a whole. The rotors are modeled by using the actuator disk theory and the simulations are performed using ANSYS FLUENT. An assumed land space of 13D width and 20D length is considered for the WTs arrangement, where D is the rotor diameter. Simulations are performed for various configurations with different distances between WTs (6D, 8D and 10D) and three prevailing wind directions. Results show that the changes in WTs distribution significantly affect the wind power available in the wind farm. Staggered configuration of 6D separation distance is found to have the best power output, even with less number of WTs. Department of Energy that would utilize low power Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) for probes, landers rovers, and repeaters. These missions would contain science instruments distributed across planetary surfaces or near objects of interest where solar flux is insufficient for using solar cells. Landers could be used to provide data like radiation, temperature, pressure, seismic activity, and other surface measurements for planetary science and to inform future mission planners. The studies proposed using fractional versions of the General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS) or multiple Light Weight Radioisotope Heater Units (LWRHU) to heat power conversion technologies for science instruments and communication. Dynamic power systems are capable of higher conversion efficiencies, which could enable equal power using less fuel or more power using equal fuel, when compared to less efficient static power conversion technologies. Providing spacecraft with more power would decrease duty cycling of basic functions and, therefore, increase the quality and abundance of science data. Low power Stirling convertors are being developed at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) to provide future micro spacecraft with electrical power by converting heat from one or more LWRHUs. An initial design converts multiple watts of heat to one watt of electrical power output using a Stirling convertor. Development of the concept includes maturation of convertor and controller designs, performance evaluation of an evacuated metal foil insulation, and development of system interfaces.
